Iron Grip: Warlord, the full game the people who made the Iron Grip HalfLife 2 mod have done is pretty cool.

It used a lot of concept art by Keith Thompson (http://www.keiththompsonart.com/index.html) which is utterly stunning.

The game isn't the most polished thing ever, but is a great mix of FPS and RTS, for a groups first full game it is brilliant and very steam/dieselpunk. At worst download the demo and have a wee play about, it's what I'm doing.
;D

Hmm the demo is actually rather intriguing. I like the desperate feel the game has...hordes of enemies...and the design is very good. Anyone else got the demo? We could play a few rounds together online.

Anyone who knows the game "the chaos engine"?
I've played it recently on our SNES, and it suddenly made me think "wow,i didn't know it was this steampunk-y!"
...I've never known there was a whole series of it,though. :o

I remember. The priest with the rayguns...

Oh, there was a second part, but it was utter crap. Take it from someone who tried it on the Amiga.

Oh, it's good i've only played the first part on both the SNES and Amiga then,i guess. :D
The screenshots i found of the second one weren't really that amazing indeed, anyway.

Another game to add to the list:

The Gene Machine.

Its a 1996 point-and-click game following the misadventures of one Piers Featherstonehaugh, "the most unknown famous adventurer of the British Empire." I haven't played it yet and the reviewer at the following link doesn't have many good things to say about it, but it certainly looks Steampunk.

I remember the magazine adds for the Chaos Engine, even if I never got a chance to play any of the games.  The blurb went something like "H.G. Wells on Acid" with some very HR Geiger-esq artwork.

If you want to play it sometime, i recommend to you not to play the SNES-version.
It's nice, but there are several things cencored in it, so it's not the original.
But it is fun nonetheless.Hard to play and fun. :D

have seen it played a few times, you basically build up a town against invading armies using a rather large wrench and a generous diversity of defenses. Got pretty good marks, its a Nintendo ds game.

Edge of Twilight is the only one I can think of - but it's a brand new game for the PS3 and it looks pretty a amazing :)

Here's a nifty little steampunk game.

It's called Steambrigade, a free to download trial 2d Rts with some nifty game play mechanics. like using a supermagnet suspended from your airship to move troops around the field

the full game is $10.00

the website is www.pedestrianentertainment.com

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, only skimmed the thread, but there is a new game coming out called Damnation that is supposedly based on Steampunk culture. From the screen shoots and video's it looks quite good.

Here is a link that has some good info...
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/damnation/index.html

Games that I have played and have, if not a full steampunk theme, good parts that are steampunk are:
Skies of Arcadia
Shadow Hearts
Atelier Iris
Bioshock
Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Good, you bring the hot oil, I'll get the gears!

Ooooh, I've been wondering if I'd get anything else with a nice steampunk-related aesthetic to play on Xbox 360... BioShock is my favorite Xbox 360 game, but after beating it 4 times, it's kind of lost it's appeal as far as replaying it goes. Damnation has that awesome steampunk/weird west thing going on and Edge of Twilight looks really interesting as a post-apocalyptic thing, and they're coming out later this year too! Ach, must start saving up.

And why is it people slap the steampunk label on anything with a steam engine or a fancy clock or Victorian decor? I hate to rant, but it really bugs me when everyone claims games like Final Fantasy VI are "good examples" of steampunk video games, when if you actually play through the game, you can see that the game is no more steampunk in the game than that was in the 1880's in the USA. The more advanced technology is all powered by magic, not steam, and the only steam-related machines in the game are mundane things like trains and factory machines. The machinery itself all has more of a medieval/gothic feel to it, too, so it doesn't even touch on the usual Victorian aspects (which I feel are completely optional anyway). I just find it really disappointing when someone points out a game and claims it's steampunk, only to find out there's just a typical steam-powered airship, or some clockwork contraption in a dungeon and that's it.

Now, games like Arcanum or Skies of Arcadia... THAT'S what I'm talking about!

"Well, it's a 2-D, side-scrolling, real-time strategy game."
That alone made me think "this I have to see" a 2D side-scroller.....RTS...that is such a weird combination.
Downloading the trial version now. :D

Are there any steampunk mods for existing games? I think already slightly steampunk such as rise of legends could do with airship/victoriana mods (I wasn't satisfied with the proliferation of airships).
I also think space sims have potential (such as freelancer) - simply replace the ships and backdrops, and perhaps make it harder to move in certain planes, and it could be quite a cool little airship based RPG/shootemup.

I believe their was one in development for Freelancer, but it was a long time ago when I saw it.

Although it's out of date, it's still a good game -- Morrowind. With all the Dwemer stuff, most of which is already steam-power, I can totally see a bunch of steampunk mods being out there for it. I'd consider it worth looking into.

Matthias Gladstone

The orginal morrowind? Could you post a link/screenshots?

(edit - I just saw a topic relating to Arcanum so I guess it's somewhat more well-known than I anticipated :P)

I expect it might have already been mentioned, by I'm currently enjoying a runthrough of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (title sets itself up for here doesn't it?). High fantasy setting, so you've got elves and halflings and dwarves and such, the era is remiscent of the 19th century (even the game dates are 18XX) and it's at a time of industrial revolution thanks to the invention of steam engines. This set's up a conflict between technology and magic as each undo the other's power.
Currently running through as a half-orc dressed in machined platemail with a repeating rifle. Quite a badass image. However, after being frankly spoiled by Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, I'm slightly mourning what could have been as far as the artwork is concerned, would have really helped to make the setting I think.

Thorinis

Not sure if anyone mentioned before now but the Thief series is very good for its steampunk use.

My Arcanum's faulty  >:( :'(

It keeps offering me the option to quit when I'm in game. This is easily solved by clicking X. However, the quitting box also comes up when I'm in transit, or sleeping, causing the game to crash.

Does anyone know any fixes, short of deleting my saves of my rather spiffing human technologist?

Josh of Vernian Process

I'd imagine there would be plenty of patches, especially since the game is over ten years old now!

Check around online, or if there is still an official site, you could probably find them there.

I've just started Rise of Legends and I'm adoring the Vinci side, with all that gorgeous tech. ^_^
