I nominate the 1984 production of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Overall, the film is dystopian rather than steampunk, but the technology used in Winston's Records Department has a 1920s look: pneumatic tubes, vintage upright telephones, and devices on scissors extension arms.

more of a dieselpunk style.

I am currently watching Igor and i have to admit it has a very steamy feel. Steam cars, ray guns and, evil scientists. Best part is John Cleese and Eddie Izzard play 2 of the scientists!

Hmm, I'd be tempted to suggest Porco Rosso (1992-Hayao Miyazaki) it is a little late, being set in World War One Italy so it is a personal thing, but I don't really feel the diesel era starts till the 1930's.
The earlier 1910-20s of more experimental aircraft, while not "steam" does for me fit more with the steam era experimentalism.

I'd be inclined to agree, I always got that vibe from the film. I'm so happy I stumbled upon it :)

Was The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. in there? Well, I guess its not a movie actually...

If TV shows are good for the list, then I second the nomination for Briscoe County Jr. :) I was just watching the "Pirates!" episode of that series last night. I love it. Pirates with an armor plated stagecoach, with a cannon mounted on it, chasing down helpless covered wagons in the Nevada desert. They had a sweet pirate cave hideout too.

Speaking of Bruce Campbell shows, I would also nominate Jack Of All Trades for the list as well. Mrs. Emilia Smythe Rothschild is one smart lady. I thought her home-made submarine, with hull breaching drill and airlock for attaching to the bottom of pirate ships, was awesome. :)

FWIW, I've just posted an update to the "Essentials" list.  It's posted under Textual.
Blackadder: A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

sapphire_distortion

I would think City of Ember would count as having steampunk elements.

Scarves are now 25% off!

"I swear it on my own mother's grave."
"Does she have a grave?"
"Oh yes, I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back."

GarthRousch

the 1989 animated film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.

while the overall tone is more fantasy than steampunk, the opening sequences definately have a rather steamy feel to them.

That and the setting is just after the victorian era and still has some visual influence from that time.

Lieutenant Emilia Parson

What about 'Return to Oz' (1985)

It had Tik Tok, the clockwork robot guard in it.

I loved that film as a kid

I just watched Brotherhood of the Wolf and quite enjoyed it :3

I get a wonderfully steamy vibe off a film that actually isn't out yet ( :o ) But maybe once it is it can be reviewd?

It's nice to look at anyway although it appears to be split between two decades.

Fiereci

Other than the creature, I don't know if I'd say that movie was steamy. But it is an excellent movie. Thanks for reminding me that I still need to get this for my library. :)

What's the title of the movie you were trying to point out?

That trailer should still be working. It's called Franklyn

Yes I didn't know whether it would be that steamy when I bought it, I'm a bit interested in French history right now so that was more my impetus... But the guns were pretty, the beast was fun and there were corsets. That made up for what it lacked for me.

Oh hey, I have seen that trailer here locally. Don't remember if it was on TV or what. That does look like a cool movie.

I fell in love with those highwayman jackets the two main characters wore. I still want one of those :)

Oh my yes! I don't know how historically accurate those are but I liked them! My friend who watched it with me though found them a bit creepy... I think she likened them to spitmasks

I may have discovered a love for red velvet from Marianne's riding outfit though

Marrock

picaro

Apologies, I didn't spot your post Marrock.

Marrock

Nothing to apologize for, it looks like it could be a decent movie... if the planets align properly and the fates aren't just toying with us yet again.

Josh of Vernian Process

I disagree with Porco Rosso, while one of the most fantastic movies in the world, it is all based on real aircraft designs, even the fanciful stuff really existed in one form or the other. Steam/Dieselpunk to me reflects things that didn't exist but could have.

Gilded Age Records is a collective of like minded Indie artists, all unified by a common 19th Century/Steampunk theme.

If you're putting short films on the list, may I humbly suggest my film, "Professor Dantes and the Severin Conundrum"?

The ripper being played by none other than the very awesome David Warner, who's starred in everything from a cinematic version of Lovecrafts Cool Air to torturing Jean-Luc Picard in TNG, and the voice of Master Control program in Tron....

No matter the program or film he always gives a great performance.

Captain Nemo and the Underwater City

I was some where between ages 4-6 when I first saw this movie on T.V.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065522/

I just watched it again for the first time since this week. I was amazed at just how much I remembered!

Unfortunately poster of this show didn't number the parts in the titles.

Not as good as Disney but good in it's own way.

I almost posted this one but I wasn't sure if it'd count! It is a very good movie though.

Are we only doing movies or are television shows on this thread as well?
