Well, my eyesight is not what it once was...nevertheless, it is a simple spelling variation, the original name traces back to Nechtan, a Pictish king. Our clan were the original keepers of the castle Fraoch Eileen, on Loch Awe. Unfortunately, the MacNaghtens (original spelling variation) failed to support the Bruce, and lost our holdings. My mother's people first went to Ireland, where they acquired a reputation for horse thievery, then to North Carolina, USA, in the mid 1700's, anglicizing the name to McKnight, and eventually to merely Knight, which was my mother's maiden name. I grant you, the relationship is undoubtedly a distant one, but I am sure we share Clan and Sept.

It's been some time since I have seen "Moulin Rouge" however I remember liking it. I found it anachronistically appealing but I fail to remember anything....  ...fanciful. I guess I'll just have to re watch it. ;D

Last night my eyes melted from their sockets....Don't watch this GRANDE FROMAGE....At the Earth's Core (1976).  It had a great steampunk core digger in the first 5 minutes and then it didn't just go downhill from there it jumped off the cliff.  Horrible!

Here is a suggestion:

The BBC TV series Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Set in modern London, but has a steampunk feel to the costumes and some of the antique technology the people use in London Below.

What do you guys think?

As for Moulin Rouge never seen it, from what i've seen in trailers it doesn't seem very steamy but a trailer isn't always to be trusted so lets keep it on the proverbial table.

Pefaced by the fact that I am very new to steampunk, I cant help but wonder if the Madmax films would qualify? Perhaps they could be more aptly described as deiselpunk, however there seem to be some overwhelming steampunk elements - the gyro for example, and the aesthetics of the costuming...

Another film that comes to mind is Waterworld 1995 with kevin Costner...

P.S. Im with you Marrock. Baz Luhrmann is yet to make any piece of cinema worthy of my retina. Moulin Rouge can forever be relegated to the self-congratulatory dung heap of cinematic failure, along with anything by Lars Von Trier. As far as the film itself is concerned though, I belive it to be predominantly period reinactment, rather than particularly steampunk...

The whole post-apocalyptic setting is ripe for a good Steampunk treatment. But as of yet it hasn't really happened in film.

Mad Max (and more so The Road Warrior) are some of my favorite adventure flicks ever made. But they are purely post-apocalyptic. Not Steampunk.

Gilded Age Records is a collective of like minded Indie artists, all unified by a common 19th Century/Steampunk theme.

I've been looking for it in all the legal venues for years.  I don't think it's available in any current format.

Q.E.D was shown in the UK some years ago with a young Sam Waterston in the title role of Quentin E.Deverill, and it is most definitely Steampunk as it concerns Victorian superscience. A Victorian Nerve gas and rocketry were two of the episode threads.

I would like to add the Amazing Robert Baldick, an unshown pilot made by the BBC in 1973, written by Terry Nation, creator of the Daleks, starring Robert Hardy, as the titular Victorian genius and philanthropist who travels the country in a custom steam train solving mysteries, using modern science and logic. Whilst initislly it would not appear to be steampunk, or only tangetally so the reveal at the end shows this is definitely steampunk, horror revealed as science fiction.

I'm surprised that films from Leiji Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999 universe haven't been listed:

First up: Galaxy Express 999: A freaking steam train in space!  Need I say more ;D

Second up in the shared universe: Queen Emeraldis: a Space Pirate queen in her very own space-zepplin (which packs a beam weapon that would give the Death Star "laser envy").  Emeraldis also is armed with a ray gun that looks like an old Colt Dragoon (as a matter of fact it's called a Space Dragoon) and a gravity saber (some kind of weird vibro/beam sword)

Then there are the movies detailing the adventures of Captain Harlock (no, not OUR Captain Harlock, but the one whom his user name's based on):  Harlock, like Emeraldis, is a space pirate who commands a Space Battleship called the Arcadia, which looks kind of like an old Dreadnought class battleship in space, and like the Queen Emeraldis the turrets on the battleship house some stupidly powerful beam weapons.  In one of the Harlock movies ("The Arcadia of my Youth"), the targeting computer is damaged, and Tochiro, the designer of the ship, pulls out an old World War II German Luftwaffe electromechanical gunsight that enables them to lock onto and defeat their opponents.

Therefore, I move that the following movies should be added:

Galaxy Express 999
Queen Emeraldis
The Harlock Saga (which is an interesting adaptation of Wagner's Der Ring des Niebelungen)
Arcadia of my Youth (which details how Queen Emeraldis and Captain Harlock get their start into space piracy).

EDIT: and if you're going to include Sky Captain, then I'd also move that you include "The Rocketeer", which came out in 1993(?)....
