     Herr Doktor,

I like your LED watch.  sometimes it's fun to wear something unusual.  I'm in the middle of looking for a new watch right now, so I'm finding this ac useful thread.  What brand is your LED watch, if you don't mind divulging..?

Found a Japanese site with some amazing steampunk timepieces:
http://www.eager-beavers.net/products/shouhin_guide.cgi?temp=TMP0

...they have gems like these:

Its a little easier to read their web site if you translate it via Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com).  You know the old saying "it loses something in the translation"?  I say this site gains something...in particular, a great many very funny near-miss translations.

That's where I got my inspiration for my watches! Now how many people new about that site before he posted it on here? there should be an article on that watch maker in the brassgoggles main site I believe...

And on the topic of odd watches, check out http://zorigami.free.fr/odd_watches/

It's worth a look at ALL of them... and boy would I like to own one or two... or even know how some of them work!

Cheerio,
Markus

The scary thing is, Herr Doktor and I have very similar pocket watches.

The coincidences are overwhelming!  :o

The LED watch is a Tokyo Time Evolution Barcode, and can be seen here:

I strongly reccommend any timepiece fan to this site, even if you don't like the moderne, they have some superb designs available!

I was looking at Binary representation watches a while back. It'd be cool if I could put the system into a pocket watch.

You've just given me three wonderful ideas for pocket watches.  Thanks!

I myself wear a SolSuno day-to-day.

Been tempted to get myself a cheap one off eBay and try to pocketwatch it.

Lopt, I've just recieved the same one today, but in silver colour.
It's rather flimsy, but looks pretty. I'm going to get another one, soon enough. One that's of better quality.

Hullo, my first post here, and I will start off with a question:
What does one need to clean a pocketwatch, and how does one go about it?
I have a watch and I think all it needs is a good cleaning and oiling. Since I have one (possibly two) that already work, I thought I'd try out making this one work by my own self.

At this juncture most SF members are familiar with the work of Japanese master steampunk watch maker Haruo Suiekichi.  His designs range from (relatively) conservative to outrageous, and while his steam cooked recipes may not appeal to all tastes they are always entertaining.  Link warning - tons of pix;

http://www.eager-beavers.net/products/shouhin_guide.cgi?temp=TMP0

Keeping in mind some of Mr. Suiekichi's more conservative design themes I made some minor mods to a new pocket watch using one of the two styles of wrist-worn pocket watches originating during the WWI timeframe (surrounding the pocket watch in a leather case or attaching wire lugs directly to the metal pocket watch case).  These two styles are typically described as a transitional watches, and while it is (in my mind anyway) less "dark" in theme than his it is also closer to Victorian themes and I can (and do) use it daily.  The Flickr set below has numerous photos as well as "How To" instructions to make your own.  This is my first try at both Flicker and 'making' something (making is not really true, as I'm just lightly customizing an existing product), but I like the final product and I'll get 'better with time'.  markf.

Advice . don't. You probably don't have the correct tools, or experience. You will break it.  Its not as simple as it seems, Even the oils required are not your common oils, but oils specially formulated for watches. Oiler tools are also specialized, having tips less that 1/3 mm. The things that will most likely happen if you attempt this are a bent hairspring or a broken/bent staff. Both of these will render your watch inoperable.. Another thing that stumps most first-timers on a pocket watch is the simple act of getting the movement out of the case. The stem is fixed in the case, and its not always obvious on how to remove the movement.
I could go on, but still, my advice, is don't try it..

Cheers

Oh, I was so excited. Oh, well, I guess I'll have to wait and get the money to get it looked at. Thanks anyways

I got this watch in the 80's at a little shop in Denver. I love it! It's Art Nouveau, from the late 1800's.

Hahaha! Great minds, eh Mark?  That looks great!  I'll post pics (when I get home) of a similar project that I'm just about done with.  It's a quartz movement, brass hunter case pocket watch with chunky leather band.  I'm really happy to be almost completed.

Earlier this week I tried posting a pix of this "Nautilus Standard Crew Issue Epipelagic Marine Chronometer" wrist worn pocket watch, but it bombed out.  So now after reading similar 'posting photos' posts here's a second try.  If it does not work again please accept my DOH! in advance.  markf
