Something needs to swirl certainly. Could possibly use something of the soul's former inhabitant as a recepticle to keep the soul lashed to our mortal plane!

Nice though...

the smoke would be cool, like those units that make steam trains models look all "puffy".
but there is no way of it getting out of the dome.

I remember seeing exhibits at a science museum that recreated a cyclone effect using a fan and some sand. Maybe looking into that would be worth while?

Wonderful project, sir. Wonderful materials. Well, if your...thing...is just a show-off, you could use a smoke machine. Maybe with colored smoke. Something purple or green would look good. But then, there has to be a hole to let the smoke come out again.
ok, here we go. i didnt knew a tinkergirl before i chose my usename. true story.

I'm with the smoke idea too

Smoke moving around (the train tingie is a good idea) with some light, from under or something, to give it a spooky effect.

the cyclone idea is good too, If you're good with electricity you could make a electric arc between two electrodes, still with the lighting effect, and a fan of some sort, to make the smoke move.

or for the same global effect, the lighting, and white (or blue) lights flashing at random intervals.

you could also add a bottle of some strange liquid that would be used to appease the soul momentarily (the flashing diminishes, the green colour of the light becomes different, changes colour, the smoke moves less fast, etc)

They'd have to be some big (and well-hidden!) discs.... but good thought....

My concern would be that if you put a hole in it now, then when the time comes that you actually DO end up using it to house some disembodied spirit, it may escape through that hole. Then what soul-proof substance could you use to prevent escape?   Hmmmm.  I'll have to give this some  :-\thought!
Adventure awaits

Nice

Perhaps simply a large crystal that was used to intrap said soul?
