The costumes in this video are so steampunk it gives me chills.

Also, Boy's "Joey" which is an animated fable that looks like an old storybook.  Very steampunk in feel.

As a musician and an artists myself i tend to air on the side of caution when it comes to having my entire body of work categorized by narrow minded view points of what should be based on people that want to classify me for a simple digestable package.  Instead I embrace the philosophy that I create music. Some songs may be appropriately categorized and appreciated by people that prefer more industrial beats, while others may prefer my more pop oriented which are often more uplifting, other songs may be disturbing, and other songs may be uplifting and positive. Some songs may incorporate influences from ancient African or American Indian tribal beats, other songs may travel through middle-eastern progressions and rhythms, there are countless other reasons and examples why my music may vary and just because I love copper, clockworks, gears, vest, and top hats does not mean my music needs to be confined in order to be accepted by other people that like these things..   I would hate to be an artist forced into such a narrow categorical reference... to have all my music - every single song I write to be punk or thrash or metal or industrial or hip hop is death.  Instead I encourage the world to encourage and support an open philosophy to fuse sound, the cross mutate, and blend and morph and to be able to fold space and time upon itself to introduce multiple genres into something new that does canto be defined by what is already in place for you to pull from the freezer.  Baroque influences with classic rock tones and heavy electronica beats and then slam the listener into a wall of organic soundscapes only to eventually lead them through techno driven dub step and gothic love songs of yesteryear....  this I think is why I've had a hard time calling myself anything based on all the current narrow minded genres and I why I coined the phrase.

Dark World Jazz and Dark World Electronic.  Is it all steampunk. No probably not... but is some of it... who perhaps... if you like steampunk and you like my music and it makes you feel more steampunk when you are listening to it then who knows perhaps that makes some of it steampunk.  Does my music suddenly become steampunk because I put on an aviator hat... since time travel is already a part of the steampunk timeline and pre existing folklore there is no reason you can't continue to listen to your punk music while shooting ray guns with your friends. 

I personally can't see myself writing lyrics about raiding pirate ships but yet I'm working with a new crew called the Air Ship Isabella and just started working on an instrumental theme song for them.  As a musician I'm an emotional soul and as such my music reflects both my personal life and the world around me... as I meet new people and have new experiences I find new inspiration but still I will often resort to my natural philosophy my own inner muse.

I'm not bound to ever fully confine myself to narrow minded viewpoints of genre ideals of steam music would sound like.  The beauty of the culture to me is that the door is wide open and I think it should remain wide open.  But hey what do I know. I apparently can only see 16,000,000 different shades of color.

Tally Hall (most famous for "Banana Man") doesn't dress steampunk and they don't call themselves a steampunk band, but some of their music is most definitely steampunkish, and they get played on Clockwork Cabaret a lot.

I chose the bands that I suggested for this list because I know all of their shows would be completely appropriate to go to in Steampunk garb. I guess I consider a band up for more of a Steampunk categorization if you can go to their show dressed exactly as you like and fit right in as a Steampunk.

I would have to say this is the closest definition for a 'Steampunk' band I could come up with as well. This is something I have often thought about, but as Steampunk is not a musical genre per se. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Steampunks at the VNV Nation show in London last weekend!

While I agree with some of what's been said, I don't feel that to Genre categorise is to be 'narrow minded' per se. The point, IMO, of Genres is to help the 'consumer' to easily identify music they may be interested in. After all, there's such a wealth of easily available music now that without Genre, one would not be able to see the proverbial forest for the trees. I can appreciate, as an artist, not wanting to pidgeon hole or define yourself, because this can in some way close doors, however I don't personally feel that Genre is a bad thing.

If you're purely creating music for your -own- pleasure and do not care what others think at all, or if they listen or purchase it, then there is no need for genre. However if you are looking, in any way, to produce a product for 'consumption', some identification of that product is (perhaps sadly?) necessary.
