Clearly I was not on the voting panel... :)

....You had suggestions that weren't considered?

You should have filled out an entry form, when you had the chance.

More Canberra folk here! We have our own thread, and casual meet-ups every month(ish).

Another Canberran checking in.

Been off forum for a while due to the usual (life getting in the way) but have now returned to the fray.

Moxie Sassafras

Hi! I'm Moxie, aka Julia. I met a few of you at Steampump on the weekend, and that was where I heard about this site. I'm new (but very enthusiastic) about the world of steampunk, and I've been getting my friends into it as well (they don't need much urging).

I dabble in costume and prop making - mostly armed with pliers and a glue gun, but I'm toying with the idea of learning how to weld and solder.

I'm Sydney-based, but very willing to travel to Melbourne for events. I'm also very, very interested in attending/organising some Sydney-based events.

In the world of steampunk, I am the Hon. Moxilene Sassafras, of the Oxford Sassafrasses. I am a Jill of many trades, including (but not limited to) scientific exploration (particularly for the purposes of finding natural resources with which to better our Empire) and an inventrix of mechanical curiosities. I am also an avid supporter of the Suffragette movement. Why, if a member of the fairer sex can captain an airship, can she not also determine the course of her country?

I was recently decorated for my services to the Empire. I lead a team of brave explorers and scientists to the wilds of darkest Africa, where we found (and secured) one of the largest known natural deposits of hydrogen gas. Soon, it will be enough to power the Empire's fleet of airships for many decades.

Lovely to hear from you Moxie - did we meet at Steampump?

(And by the by - I used to live in Sassafrass...)

The clockmaker

hey, i'm 'the clockmaker', here but i go by other names elsewhere. i'm fairly new to steampunk but i've been interested in it for some time, and i ordered my first clothes and goggles and such just a few days ago ^_Q.

for those who are interested, i've started making steampunk themed warhammer miniatures
here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/295932.page

although they're going to be mixed in with the other stuff i'm doing, they will feature more heavily than the other models :)

too bad i'm in brisbane, i would have loved to go to steampump.

Senior Engineer clocking in from Brisbane.

Please don't read any 'snobbery' into my moniker, the 'Senior' eludes to my years in service nothing more. The Engineer part is accurate, I have worked with and around steam and steam equipment for many a year. (And no, I didn't know Jules Verne personally, but I did know his brother Bern Verne, unfortunate name). My good lady and myself have engaged with the local SP movement only in the last six months, but are really enjoying the company of like minded folk.
Just as we had overcome a bad situation, one of the crew said, 'it could be worse'. Then lo and behold it did get worse.

maduncle

Excellent to hear from more Antipodean Steampunkers.

Now, we are getting some press as a subculture of note.

Melbourne's 'Age' newspaper had an excerpt in the A2 section on Steampunk, from a much longer article on Steampunk, which will appear in the June edition of Meanjiin magazine (out soon in all disreputable bookstores).

You are not the only one in trouble Prof!

Baron - do you have a studio or store somewhere I can visit?

Baron von Schutter

sure do, my lab is in the basement (dungeon) of the Old Meat Market in North Melbourne, a beautiful building dating back to 1874. It'll be a few weeks before we're up and running again, the old building had a bowel problem and we literally got swamped with raw sewage .... twice in as many days :( ... the second time they had 800 people upstairs for the New Wave Festival and free drink and food ... we ended up with the sum of their merriment ... anyway, almost two weeks later the cleaning and sanitising crew has finally finished with the clean-up, but a lot of our wooden furniture got contaminated and had to be thrown out ... and us with an exhibition coming up (needless to say at this point I have been able to make nothing for it). It's going to take a few more weeks for insurance etc etc .... bah, hate not being able to do my work (although we're in a temp space atm operating at limited capacity.
Cx translates as Chris, btw ;)
Anyway, point is that atm I have nothing set up and I won't be doing much in the way of plasma initially once we have set up again, I have a lot of other work and the plasma is a bit of a hobby, the kind of hobby where I end up still sitting in my lab at 3am filling tubes and fiddling with the generators to see what I get. It's also an expensive hobby, the rare gases and specialised electrodes aren't cheap and a good plasma driver is near $100 alone, and I have to import them from the States, although cheap plasma balls from fleamarkets have drivers in them that are ok to use, just don't expect much movement from those! Anyone know any electronic engineers who can build decent, cost effective plasma drivers here in Melbourne?
I'll let you know when I'm back on my legs, though, I'd love to have a chat about doing some work; I'm a glassblower, not a metal worker, if you get my drift. I haven't made a Geissler tube per se, but they're no more complicated than the pieces I've made to date.
here's a few links to vids of some of the plasma work I do, a couple of others I've already posted in the tactile room. I also put a link to our website page of plasma pics, there's a few more bits of different shapes in there.

News flash!

Latest edition of Meanjin magazine (on the shelves now in good bookstores) features the article that some of us interviewed for a while back.

A jolly good read and a good intellectual exploration of the subculture.

I recognise most of the Antipodean BG thread folk in the article but not all - were you there?

My, my... just when I start thinking about taking my interest in SteamPunk more seriously I find this place.  ;D

My name is Robert McPherson I'm 26, living in the outskirts of Melbourne and will shortly be going back to school (C.A.E. in Flinder's Lane if anyone knows it) to get my V.C.E.s and further my writing skills in the hopes of becoming a Store/Lore writer in the gaming industry, perhaps with some SteamPunk Horror writing on the side.

What do I own ATM that's SteamPunk? Well aside from that great game Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic just a bunch of dreams.  ;)

Welcome "ScytheKnight" - the outskirts of Melbourne contains many steampunkers.

Ensure you stay tuned for Miss Alexanders steampunk fashion parade at the Thornbury Theatre in October.

That I most certainly will do, I'm just disappointed that I found out about this site just over a week after Steampump.

But I'm sure that there will be other opportunities to meet you guys and gals.
