Hi, I`m Thistle, from Scotland. I`ve never been involved in Steampunk, in fact only `discovered` it a few months ago, but fell in love with it. 
Is it possible for a middle aged (49) woman living in one of the most remote places in Britain to learn more about, and possibly become involved in, the fascinating arena of Steampunk? I certainly hope so.

I started doing steampunk things in my teens when I fitted my then new stereo into a old gramophone case I found, that was in the mid 70's and been doing things like that ever since.

Hi my name is chainwalker And I came on here as part of doing my research for a semi-private graphic design project i'm doing that involves steam punk. Right now I'm doing some design sketches for a costume that's a cross of robin hood/steam punk so I'm researching everything I can about the subject. I'll also be submitting sketches to you guys to get an idea of what you think and maybe what I can improve on as far what I can add to make him more steampunkish.

I hope to really get into this as I draw up more ideas for this project. I'll be sharing some of the sketches as time. Hopefully everyone enjoys it

I've been lurking these forums for about a day or so I think, no I can't even remember. BUT ANYWAY, I think I'll introduce myself now.

I'm Blixium as you might have guessed, nearly 20. I'm from Manchester in England. :3
I had this site poked at me a couple of times from a couple of people that post on here so I decided to join up.

I apparently after just finding out will be working with Greater Manchester police as a designer, I'm also looking for inspiration for my creative stuffs.
Creative stuffs being, photoshop, illustrator... ugh, and a bunch of other bloody design packages I'm too lazy to type.

Uhhh... what else now... OH, I have a stupidly wide variety of music taste. It can go from like Korpiklaani, Agonoize, or Suicide Commando to fucking .. I dunno... Monty Python? *facedesk* I can't think. My brain is switching between OH LOOK A CAT and PRETTY SOUNDS and SEXAY MEN and this post.

I'm not here to troll, in fact I'd probably just want to make friends here if anything.

hello everyone,

i'm a lampworker living in california. i mostly make, oil candles, vases, suncatchers, jewelry, smoking apparatti and small multimedia sculptures. i'm working on a design for some matching lighter/pipe combos. it's based off of the basic trench lighter design. researching lighters i stumbled across steampunk and this forum.

and now the gears and wheels are spinnin..............

i doubt i'll be doing much posting, but i will be here looking and thinking and dreaming, and i figured it was only polite to introduce myself.

Hello, I'm Jonni5ive and myself and my wife for the last couple of years or so now have fallen in love with anything neo-victorian, victorian, steampunk etc, so much so we are now making our own range of contemporary jewellery, clothes, photography and artwork.

I've found steampunk is a wonderful way of being to embrace the geek within me! as there is alot of it!

We are from Northern grimy and gritty "Great" Britain, personally don't get the great bit..and unfortunately we don't seem to have caught on to the Steampunk world as much as the Americans, but I can feel a storm is approaching, I genuinely think Britain is preaparing for a Steampunk revolution, more and more traces are appearing in mainstream fashion and media now I think as soon as people cotton on to what it is they generally fall in love with the concept, as have we.

If you are interested have a look around our site, we are also in the beginning stages of doing news and reviews, providing information about the latest events and gigs in Britain, latest films, games and literature, any comments would be greatly appreciated as this is something we are passionate about any constructive criticism would be very gratefully accepted and will prove helpfully productive in the long run.

Welcome everyone to Brass Goggles.  We look forward to your contributions.

Jonni5ive you may be very surprised to learn that there is a very active and vibrant steampunk scene in the United Kingdom, we just don't make such a big deal about it on the internet perhaps.  There has long been a steampunk presence at WGW which is growing event on event. White Mischief in London have promoted some excellent steampunk events. The Little Marlborough in Brighton is another steampunk hotpsot under the guidance of Tarik (aka Carnival Catalyst on here.)  Oxford staged a hugely successful exhibition of steampunk art attracting more than 80,000 visitors earlier this year and an even bigger touring exhibition is planned for 2011.  There is lots more going on or recently completed from extensive school arts projects to steampunk renditions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.  I would be remiss to not also mention The Asylum which is the UK national steampunk festival (but only one of an annual programme of events run by the VSS).  In its second year more than 800 steampunks are gathering in Lincoln in just a few short weeks to enjoy three days of fun and socialising and of course the Bazaar Eclectica perhaps the best purely steampunk market in the World.  Of course there are scores of smaller meets, gatherings and groups active around the UK.  Here is one good place to find them.  Check out geographical - United Kingdom for more information.

Hi Tinker, I don't know if you remember but we actually met at the last WGW and i bought one of your fine Bowler Hats!!! Which might i add is still fantastic thankyou very much, it was myself and my wife that spoke to you and Elsie and you gave us some great information about leather merchants etc.
I think in relation to what you're saying thats the point i was/am trying to make that it is growing exponentially and quite rapidly, i understand that the movement has been in Britain for many years now but I just wish it had reached a level where we had dedicated nightclubs like the Edison in Los Angleles, hopefully we will.
I have to say we were due to see you this September in Linclon at the Bazaar Eclectica as we did have a stall, but unfortunately we are going to have to pass on this event but will definitely be at the next one, it will be a shame to miss it...all the best and thanks for the speedy reposnse to my post.

I was trying to make clear that UK steampunk is just as active as US (in fact due to the geographical proximity it is actually more so) but we are just a little more reticient at promotion on the internet.  I found my last steampunk visit to the US very enlightening.

The Edison is an impressive venue but is not actually a dedicated steampunk place. In fact it is more 1920s/gangster/flapper/speakeasy and attracts a general clientelle.  By the same token you could equally call the Cafe de Paris London a steampunk nightclub.  Steampunks do in fact frequent both.  Population wise only London has the potential to support a dedicated steampunk venue in the UK but even so it will take time to generate the market for this - time and a lot of activity.

I hope we will be able tp offer you a place in the Asylum Bazaar next year but we are full to bursting and have no possibility to expand next year. Places may become available if people decide not to trade again next year.

We look forward to seeing your work with Steamstress.  Be sure to promote through trading here and publicise any events you may organise in geographical or indeed the British Steampunk Community etc on facebook.

Hello ! I'm Dave.... 51, married... two teenage kids... I'm and Engineer by profession and a photographer by choice.
I first heard of steam punks thru the "Chap" magazine a couple of years ago... and had my memory jogged by this month's edition of " Bizarre" magazine...having been involved with Victorian engineering as a hobby (Traction and stationary steam engine restoration) and working on later machinery as a job..... I love making "Artistic fantastic fantasy" items.
My current hobby is photography, I specialise in portraiture, but enjoy all types.

Hi, Im Jo. Im 36 and from Coventry and I'd never even heard of Steampunk till a few weeks ago when a friend told me he thought I was one. Luckily for me, this forum was one of the first things I stumbled across in my research and while Im still not 100% convinced of my Steampunk eligibility, I must admit its the closest thing Ive found to encapsulating all my interests. I love Victoriana and tend to incorporate it into my everyday wardrobe, I also love reading, sci fi, fantasy and rooting round in charity shops and antique shops. I like turning something old into something new and I enjoy sewing as well as trying my hand at plumbing or D.I.Y. Ive never joined a forum in my life before so please excuse me if I make a mistake, its just that the thing that has lured me into joining here is the fact that this forum is so inclusive of everyone and everyone seems so polite, intelligent and down right nice (most of the time ) that I want to be a part of it. If more people came across like that in real life, the world would be a better place. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde...We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the dirigibles

My name is Drew, I'm 37 and work as an technology objects conservator for a museum in Australia.  Coaches, steam engines and all sorts of aged widgets abound.  I also have an interest in valve electronics (actually putting high voltages through those little glass bottles and making them do stuff, instead of simply gluing them to a widget to make it look cooler).

Thanks to school theater in the mid 80's I have a soft spot for women in big skirts, corsets and lace choker necklaces.

Well, I would say, based on what other have said in this thread, I am more of an idea man (not many useful skills at making things) than a man of action, though lately I have been working with some more productive people on getting a number of my ideas (wooden computer case, silk brocade vest, weather resistant top hat, and anarchistic Victorian morning dress) acted upon.

my name is Steven, I'm 37 and I'm a domestic engineer (plumbing, heating, air). I live in Holland with my wife and 9 month old baby girl. My hobby's are: cycling, swimming, movies and... building bicycles.
I've build 2 wooden bicycles. A stretched cruiser and a cruiser with wooden babyseat. Pics follow later.

I was always interested in technical stuff and how things work. As a kid, I always wondered how someone could engineer a steamengine. I could figure out, with my limited 10-year-old knowledge, some parts but most of the levers, wheels, gauges and meters were abracadabra to me. That misteriousness is the beauty of a steamengine.

Back to building bicycles: for my next project, I want to modify my old mountainbike into a steampunk-bicycle. I've seen some bikes on this forum and a lot of steampunk how-to's. Perhaps I can pick up some good ideas and maybe I can give someone a good tip.

I've been lurking here for a couple of months, on and off. I never really felt the need to post anything before, but I realized this morning that when you already spend at least an hour a day on a forum, it might well be time to make an account.

The Golden Compass. My favorite book as a child, it was like the perfect world come to life on the page. I didn't know there was a whole genre in a similar vein until early '07. Needless to say, I've been rabid about the steam aesthetic ever since.

Persona's name is Brigid, I'm Kaitlyn. Theatre major working in Michigan on a million and a half things. I've got no free time. I've been into steampunk for a few years now, finally putting together an outfit this summer, and working on my second. A friend and I have created an airship and a crew that hunts zombies (at our local zombie-hunting nerf event), along with ridiculous backstories and the like for our characters.

I work in a costume shop, so I do lots of costumes and creating. In renaissance faires and part of the cast at my Uni's faire. I fence, participate in renaissance fight club, ballroom dance, swing dance, play quidditch, and tons of other things.

I'm hoping to make a few more friends in the steampunk community. So here I am. : )
