the lovely people over at http://www.desertorchidcorsets.co.uk/ made it for me. There was a mockup that was sent to me, the choice of free fabrics is stupendous ( although mine was one of the brocades) and they are really friendly and stay in touch throughout the whole process. I am considering ordering an underbust from them next. Managed to reinforce most of the corset yesterday. It's in wearable form now, but I'll do the rest for precaution in the future, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me how to double lace it? I think that would be more durable and easier to lace tightly. I'd appreciate it. :] In exchange, I'll post pics of mine.

can any one recommend a good pattern for a beginner corestier, but not beginner seamstress?

I am used to wearing  long bodied underbust corsets, so would be looking for something similar for a first corset.

Previously i have purchased or had them custom made, but would like to give it a go myself

Lady Felis,
As an experienced corset maker, i would strongly recommend taking a course (1/2) on corset making. You will learn more about sizing, fitting and construction than from a pattern.
there is a lovely school of sewing in the Midlands/Leicestershire area, and her courses are worth every penny.

A query for the more experienced corset-makers here. 

Does it matter if you insert the grommets before or after closing up the bottom edge of your corset? 
I've gotten to these last two stages, but I'm waiting for my trim to arrive from e-bay, so I was wondering if I can stick in the grommets, then close it all up; or if this will cause some hideous disaster to occur, and my fledgling corsets to spontaneously combust?

I normally put the grommets in before trimming and after enssuring both back edges are the same in height. If anything i finish off the bottom edge before i finish the top edge as once it is on, the fit may alter across the bust line, due to being tighten more.

Yeah, I had a hunch that I'd seen this sort of thing from them, and also complaints about the quality for the price... so I decided to wait for someone to review them for us before posting them on the list...

So, that's an open invitation: if someone has had far better luck than what I've heard about, let me know.

As much as I intend to make one someday, time is not presently allowing for such a task.  So I picked one up from a merchant online. 

However, as I began to cinch it, I noticed a point at which my back suddenly complained loudly.  As soon as I loosened it a little, the pain went away immediately.  It was not the "there's something poking me" type pain, but more ache-ish.  So, what do I need to do?  Is there a particular method of cinching that decreases the likelihood of pain?  Or should I just give up on lacing it that tight?

I'd say you shouldn't lace it that tightly. How tight were you lacing it? Also, it might have been pinching your skin. I was lacing mine last night when I was fitting a jacket and it pushed my skin together and gave a rather stinging ache.

Not as tightly as I have been in one in the past.  From the location of the pain (off to the side somewhat, not under the opening), I don't think it was a pinch, and it didn't have a stinging quality.  Seemed more like my back telling me, "that's enough of that!"

Hm. Perhaps time to lay off the corsets for a bit? It might be damaging your back a bit. Or the quality of your corset is very faulty and therefor straining your back because of a poor fit.

Does anyone have any tips to share for a corset for the very VERY skinny?

I'm really quite bony due to a physical handicap (myopathy). I'm basically jealous of Keira Knightley's figure, but from the opposite end. I've already resigned to the fact that I'll never have smashing cleavage to show off, but I really do want a corset to wear. I'm thinking of an overbust - I don't much like the look of underbusts, and at least with overbust I can at least create the ILLUSION of curves.
A friend of mine who's a professional seamstress has promised to make me a corset. Any tips for her? Any tips for ME, to make the wearing of it a little more comfortable? (One upside: it'll make my posture better!)

In all honesty it really needs to be made to measure taking into consideratuon your disability and if you have special requirments I would say you friend needs to practice first on others.

As your seamstress friend will probably know, the exaggeration of curves on the seams and additional boning channels can really accentuate your figure. Also consider a sweetheart neckline as straight across just flattens

Ooh, very pretty! I keep forgetting to post a picture of mine. Now that I reinforced it, it seems oddly stronger. My friend laced it so that there was about an inch gap between the edges, and a little less at the waist, and it looked great. Only thing that worried me, though I suppose this is good, as that the bones molded to the curve in at my waist. That means I'll get the same curve next time, right? o.o

That looks very nice!  I have a couple of Gallery Serpentine corsets and have found they've held up beautifully.  I've had my Spanish Harlot for 10 years now and wouldn't mind adding a few more to my collection.

Question- to convert a pattern that uses a busk into a buskless corset, how much do you need to allow for the change? I'm in the planning stages of corset #2, and at the moment, have little in the way of discretionary funds to purchase a busk...

I think I'll treat myself and buy one from Timeless Trends after I loose all the weight I've got planned, since I plan on keeping it off. :3 Wish I could afford one from Serpentine, though I probably will one day.
