To keep the lights on, we need about $720 a year at current levels (that's $50/month).  Raising a little more to cover unexpected expenses and growth would be awesome.

So by my thinking, once we have 20 subscribers, current costs are covered, more than 20 and once we have a nice safety net of emergency money, say a year of fees, we could perhaps upgrade so we have less speed issues?

We're actually already upgrading to fix the speed issues; server was purchased, but hosting costs will go up.
