Modifying a pair of goggles?

I'm staring at this set of goggles that I purchased yesterday and I still don't know how I want to modify them. Paint will probably be involved, but I'm really quite new at this.

EDIT: *sigh* I'm in the wrong thread, aren't I?
Do you realize how crazy Lysosomes are? They're like little sacs of death!

Do you have any ideas on what you want them to look like when you're done? It sounds like you don't have a specific design in mind, but do you have a general sort of idea? It'd be a bit easier to help out if I knew where you were aiming for.

Personally, I think swim goggles so modern looking that I'd work over everything but the lenses themselves. (I'm a little gung-ho though...) You could replace the strap and nose-piece easily enough with fabric or leather. There are ways of rigging springs at the temples, if you want the band to stretch a bit, but if you will be the only one wearing them, and you don't need them to be watertight, the stretch is less important. The plastic buckles could be replaced with brass quite easily.

The blue rubber around the eye cups is the trickiest... I assume it's glued on? If you like the color, you could leave it alone. Otherwise, you could cover it with fabric (you'd have to drill through the sides of the eye cups if you're to sew it) or take it off somehow and replace it with some other sort of padding. I think that'd be difficult to do cleanly... I think getting the adhesive off would be a challenge.

You could always do something like this with them.

Überkuhl, IMHO.

On the blue plastic:  POP RIVITS.  Pop rivits and contact cemement are your BEST FRIEND!

With them you can do wonders, my good frined, WONDERS I SAY!!!

Replace the main band with leather.  Replace the nose piece with leather...  Cover the blue with leather...

Bloody hell...  My advice is all about bloody leather!  That's no advice atoll, now then is it?

Roight, here's what you do then:  You take off the backstrap (the piece that goes around the head), and replace it with a medium size leather strip, with a buckle.  After that you're on for the nose...  Just a thin piece of leather thong should do the trick, nothing more, nothing less...  If you WANT some extra padding, then wrap the leather 'round an old piece of foam or cardboard...  Your choice, old chap!

So, after that's all said and done, it's off to your local hardware (I suggest Lowes, for several reasons-not least of which I work for them!) store for some decent pop rivits.  They'll be in the hardware sectoin (Isle 13 or 14 if you find yourself around store #0480...  From the front side of the store, they'll be nearly all the way at the other end of the isle on the left hand side)...  Then it's cover the blue with leather and poprivit that in place...  Or contact cement.  That'll be on isle 9, most likely...  It's the same bloody isle with the spraypaint...

Which is the PERFECT segway into my next point!  Rust-Olium metallics spraypaint!  Get yourself some masking tape (I suggest the blue kind-leaves the least ammount of film, it does!), tape over the main oblong-*ISH* part of the lense, and spraypaint the rest rust, brass, copper, metallic of some kind, black, orange, bloody florecent pink for all I bloody care-point is, you can do JUST as well with paints as you can with acutal leather/metals IF you've an eye (and hand) for the job!  I suggest the "textured" spraypaint, cause when you're done, you can weather the look of it with a wash...

Personally, for aging my trains, I use a mixture of model paint and water (you'll have to "toy" with the mixture-no pun intended!), sprayed over the actual trains (works better than chalk in my eyes, but that's just me).  In your case, it would be over the goggles.

Once you're done with all that, have yourself a drink of something strong, and remove the masking tape.

Assuming Hood's got his balls out from under that rock, you'll have yourself quite the nice set of goggles!

Granted, if His balls are still crushed, well...  You're pretty fecked either way then, aren't ya?
No, no, girliepop, I GIVE advice, I don't TAKE it, not even my own.

I'd go for this. The goggles are to petite for bulky Steampunk goggles. Perhaps a tiny peice of brass on the sides of the goggles. Not to much.
@Xenos: Reading your post, I imagine you talking slowly, without the use of the spacebar. With an occasional hickup.  ;D No offence, but that's the way I imagine you.

Bloody hell...  It's right you are, my excellent good frined!  I was borne and raised in the south, so naturally speak slower than most-however, due to my extended time Overseas, I lost most of my "southern drawl," so now I just sound like a cross between a Mideastern American, Irish, and South African...

Perhaps one day I'll do a Vlog, so you all can put a face and voice with the name...

Excellent advice, Xenos! I shall go to the nearest Hardware store at once! Well, as soon as my wallet has recovered, that is. =/

I just have one question...

Who is Hood, and why are his testes underneath a rock? More importantly, how does that effect my goggle making abilities?(Or lack thereof?)

Hood is the King of High House Death in the Malazan Book of the Fallen.  Basically, it's a really fancy way of cursing bad luck, as it were (The rock representing "crushing" bad luck... tee hee hee!)...

I really enjoy colorful metaphores like that one-and have been trying to use them just about any chance I get!  :D

They sell little jugs Of milk at gas stations and  convenience stores and  the caps are kind of neat looking underneath.
It has a bunch Of fins so if you were to cut a hole in the middle to  look out of and then add a colored lense to  fill the hole, you could paint the cap brass.

I have a pair or two of articulated Welding Goggles ( but I never suggest anyone use this style of eye-protection for Ark, MIG or TIG welding... no skin protection) and I have modified them in various ways. My favourite ones received a splash of steampunkishness (a word of my own making, feel free to use it as it deems suitable for many an occasion) by fastening brass bezels from an electrical supply store to the lens housings. I believe that they were originally designed for holding an electric bulb socket in place, but their original purpose is now irrelevant and much time could well be wasted in speculation. The point I was trying to make (or was I?) is that there are a lot of ways to change the plain into the eye-catching. Happy rails, my friend!
Adventure awaits

Hmm, SP swimming goggles ay? *rubs chin* lets see now.

Not the greatest instructable I've ever read (not pic heavy enough for my liking) but it may give you some ideas.

It would seem paint n glue are your friends (thanks Captain Obvious), just ensure they are compatible with the plastic and foam/rubber used in yours.  :)
