Where to buy a kilt

Just wondering where's best to buy a steampunk kilt. There's a few on eBay but not much choice

Also a word of advice: dont go with your pants size when ordering a kilt. Kilts are worn higher up your waist and thus have a different size.
A kilt should fit snuggly around your hips but not obstruct movement and it should be around knee length.

I've got both a kilt, and a utility kilt (or utilikilt).  You measure your waist around the bellybutton, not the same as your waist for jeans.  If you don't, the kilt doesn't sit properly and you get the infamous 'Triangle of Shame'. There's videos on youtube how to do it properly.  An 8 yard kilt is the one you want, NOT a 5 yard one.  They just look cheap.  You can get an 8 yard tartan kilt for the same cost as a utility kilt (around £40).  If anyone tells you that you can't wear a particular kilt because you don't belong to a particular clan, or that it can only be worn by royalty, or that it's disrespectful, doesn't know the true history of tartans.  It's a myth!  Yet another Victorian romanticisation of history and tradition!  Wear what you want, and enjoy it.

Only one thing: If you're going to wear a kilt pin, don't fasten the two layers of the kilt together.  It's not designed for that.  It only goes through one layer of material, and it's the weight of the pin that stops it flapping around in high wind.

One more thing.  It will make you clairvoyant.  Seriously.  When you enter a room wearing a kilt, you will know exactly what every woman looking at you is thinking at that moment.  Just smile knowingly.

I have my own pattern, but
1) Can't afford to register it yet.
2) Can't setting on the T.P.S pattern.
I won't get a kilt because I'm banned under the public safety act from showing my legs but want it as a sash.

Some are wearing Black Watch tartan pattern, but most of us are wearing Mackenzie tartan, the pattern used by the Seaforth Highlanders.

Can relate. Closest place I found was in the Bahamas, and MacLennan tartan fabric went for 22.50 a yard....too hot for my wallet.

Kilt wearer here, and I had the same question as you. LOL

My current favorite is the UtiliKilt "Workman". Lots of pockets and a hammer loop. They didn't have a color I liked, so I just got a natural, whitish color and after many dye sessions got it to a nice caramel brown. Often worn with knee-high socks of black or ARGyle, boots, workboots, or barefoot. Red riverman's shirt or brown Mandarin style shirt, Sporran, WWII Ike style jacket insignia removed. Yes I get the comments, no I am not handsome ( I got their beer gut cut"), my wife loves it. I also have their denim one which I do not like too much because it is very heavy, and a black one which I use for more dressy occasions.

It seems that the natural wool content will have a dramatic effect in the price of the garment. I never found a kilt for less that $300 / £204 for medium weight (Lochcarron fabric from Scotland) even if made in Canada ( http://www.burnetts-struth.com ) , and there is no question that heavyweight natural wool will definitely look better, but at those prices even women's Billie "mini kilts" are not less than $133 / £90.

Nevertheless, if you really can't afford the triple digit prices, following Mr. Groomporter's suggestions (wool blend) will land you in the $70 range (unfortunately with shipping costs from America), and the only way that you can go below that is is you go to full 100% acrylic wool.

Also you have to accept that it will not be manufactured anywhere close to the UK, the Americas or anywhere in Europe.  The biggest outfit from eBay is a shop called Hamstead Music, who seem to make a good amount of noise in Google ( http://www.ebay.com/usr/hamstead-music ) , and are actually located -of all places- in Kuwait!! Don't knock it down, it's likely those people in that tiny Gulf country are loaded with money - they seem to have an international operation. Their kilts look the part, and they have both utility kilts and traditional kilts (forget about having a wide selection of tartans - their selections is very limited) and though I can't vouch for their quality, their prices will definitely take you down to $70 and $60 for full size men's kilts (and for the ladies down to $40 for Billie skirts).

I have not found anyone who can go down below that outside of Chinese manufacturer's making kilt-like Tartan women's skirts (some of them really nice and close in design to Billies, actually. They tend to go for $25-$40 with free shipping - naturally no selection of tartans, no box-pleating -usually knife pleat only-  and pleating to the sett will not be correct either).  But hey, that the life of the poor...

I have a utility kilt from Got-Kilt? I mostly use is for hiking / camping because I don't want to mess up any of my other kilts.

I also have 5 SportKilts. I love em! Reasonable price, poly viscose material, very comfortable, durable and machine washable.

I wear mine all the time unless I HAVE to wear pants.
