I'll try the thermometer widget in Win10 as soon as I have a copy. So difficult to debug when the bloody o/s changes so frequently. I am sure it isn't the engine, it'll be my code.

For the moment you'll have to make do with Win 8, here is a 2nd screenshot of the widgets on a Linx tablet.

Iconoid has been used to hide any standard Windows desktop icons, only the widgets show on the underlying desktop. Looks OK - I think.

Introducing.........
"SteamTemp".

This is a Rainmeter Temperature monitoring skin I've been working on.
Each "Thermometer" is a separate skin, so they can be grouped side by side, stacked vertically or placed in separate locations on the desktop.

Thanks go to,
Unk, for the use of your thermometer icon,
IllustratorG on DA, for the use of his artwork,
Mordasius on DA for inspiration.

Mr. Itt, your desktop screenshot is truly astounding.  Do you need a special program to run that desktop?  Or is it simply an image?
I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future.

Thanks,
The desktop is both an image, widgets, & rainmeter skins.
It is a work in progress.

The background I created in GIMP using artwork by IllustratorG on DA.
The Widgets are Unk's, and the rainmeter  skins are by Mordasius on DA.
For Unk's widgets you need the Yahoo!  widget engine. (follow the link to Unk's website)
For the Rainmeter skins you need to be running Rainmeter.

I've been adding to it.

My latest screenshot.

The trouble is with steampunk desktops, people say that they do become a bit 'busy', yours, cousin Itt is busy, mine is busy too. For the Victorians that was no problem:

For me it is no problem either but for some modern tastes it is simply too much. My desktop is a reflection of that period and I enjoy the clutter. Thing is I know where it all is, everything is close to hand and it is fun to use.

Cousin ITT,

One thing I am keen to have tested is Windows 10 touch-pinching on the desktop. The Linx tablet I have allows pinching to resize just as all other touch-based o/ses do. However windows 10 disables pinching when in desktop mode which is a  rather stupid thing of MicroDolts (sic) to do. It would be rather nice to have pinching enabled on the desktop.

For example if you put the tablet in non-metro (desktop mode)  as shown above, and try to enlarge the widgets so that you can see them more clearly then nothing happens. You cannot zoom via pinching on the desktop, how daft is that? When Win 8 came out MS wanted you to use/develop metro apps solely and so they have not made the appropriate changes to support finger-based actions on the desktop. Tosspots.

If you manage to get hold of a tablet based device like the linx and get the chance to test pinching then please do so. I should do it perhaps on the Linx device I have but at the moment I am coding/testing just to cater for windows 8.

I could make changes to each and every widget to implement pinching myself on a per-widget basis but if Windows 10 is about to implement pinching on the desktop then there is no point in doing so.

Unk,

Yes, it is getting a bit busy.
My intentions are to spread my desktop across 3 monitors.

Which means I get to make another version of wallpaper for the other monitors which will be in portrait mode.
I will of course have to redo the center wallpaper when I move everything else.

The PC I'm using is presently set up test bed style. It is not in a case yet. (WIP, waiting for better weather)
The wallpaper I'm using is simply an extension of what I'm doing with the PC's case/cabinet/enclosure.

As to the touch screens/pads, I myself prefer a PC with a keyboard, & trackball.

The latest rework on the "SteamTemp" Rainmeter skin.
I moved the °C to a ToolTip that comes up when you hover over the thermometer bar.

Update:

"SteamTemp" can now be downloaded for your enjoyment.

If you want busy then I can give you busy, a chap called resobrain created this and I don't think it has been posted here before:

You can see it here in larger format:

Steampunk Weathered Clock Icon and Widget

The widget clock is a moveable widget that you can move anywhere around the desktop as you require. It tells the time just as you would expect it to do so.

Double-clicking on the Clock will cause a personalised Windows/Mac application to fire up. The first time you run it there will be no assigned function and so it will state as such and then pop up the preferences so that you can enter the command of your choice. The widget takes command line-style commands for windows or Mac OS/X.

Not quite sure what you are going to use the icon for, possibly for access to some time or calendar function? That is up to you to decide. This icon is eminently usable on windows/ Mac OS/X / Linux &c. The widget is usable on both Windows and Macs.

The widget is a Yahoo widget and it needs the yahoo widget engine. You can get that here: http://lightquick.co.uk/steampunk-widgets.html?Itemid=264

Also provided in the following formats:

Multiple size PNGs
Windows multiple size .ICO
Mac OS/X .ICNS
Mac OS/X finder format

Get it here (and do vote!) http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/46929

The widgets and icons are inside the zipfile.

Someone, Madame Shyarly, has made a wallpaper from the above widgets and resources, so it is rather static but it still looks good. This could be used and then all the widgets applied to bring the thing to life.

This is one I am working on now - ready to download!

Taking an older widget I was dissatisfied with and making it better. Well, actually making it worse, grunging it and weathering it, breaking bits off, adding shadows, menu options, making the crane and the valve actually function. Adding sounds &c.

The widget is a Yahoo widget and it needs the yahoo widget engine. You can get that here: http://lightquick.co.uk/steampunk-widgets.html?Itemid=264

Also provided in the following formats:

Multiple size PNGs
Windows multiple size .ICO
Mac OS/X .ICNS
Mac OS/X finder format

Get it here (and do vote!) http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/46936

UPDATE:

o Hands rotate to more or less the start position when the chain is pulled.
o The help valve shrinks when the widget is resized.
o Tooltip added to the help page
o New sound added, sounds effects re-ordered
o New security and dock images

You can see the widget in more detail and with more imagery here:

My latest desktop.
The desk is made from yereverluvinuncleberts icons.
The keyboard was cropped from pendragon1966's steampunk laptop.
The wallpaper, & frame is from DA.
The clock is from Mordasius's BB&B suite

The screen is a Rainmeter skin which can be changed.
So far I have System Information, System Temperatures & Fan Speeds, and Network Information screens.
They are reworks of illustro skins.

I'm planning on doing this desktop like a hidden object game.

yereverluvinunclebert

That's lovely. I have so many plans for that desk and you've beaten me to it.
You've also used my steampunk dialog box, a good and original combination that works.

Amazing what you can up with given a bit of a leg-up. I am impressed!

Mordasius and Pendragon will also be pleased, I have no doubt.

I also used your phone icon, the steampunk dialog box covered part of the original phone.
The screen was cropped out of the image afterwards, and used as a background for the skins.
I've long admired the artwork in the hidden object games my wife plays, and just started playing around with images.
I'll be doing more skins to fill in the vacant areas.

A wallpaper of a military desktop, currently just a 1280 x 800 pixel size but if you want more you'll need to ask.

I created it using the real items, none of this is virtual, then I took a snap with a 'real' film camera and took away the colour. I own all these items in 'real' life and when composed they make a good wallpaper. Removing the colour makes it not too busy.

The Steampunk Underwidget (black and white) is a 24hr clock that sits on your steampunk desktop looking as if it is part of that desktop.

It has been made black and white to correspond with my black and white desktop wallpapers that you can get here: http://yereverluvinuncleber.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Leather-Desktop-Wallpaper-Black-White-533842856

The underwidget is designed to work with the Steampunk Timekeeper Orrery MkII that has a transparent glass middle section that can be made fully opaque or fully transparent. When fully transparent the underwidget does its job acting as the orrery's internal gubbins. However, the underwidget does not need the orrery and can simply sit on the desktop on its own. It has a shadow that can be enabled to make it seem to sit deeper into the desktop in a three dimensional sense. The Underwidget works better with one of our existing background wallpapers that you can get here . You can see how it works from the image below. The widget really looks as if it is embedded into the actual desktop.

You can get the B&W version of the widget here:

This is the Steampunk Leather Desktop Wallpaper Black White that goes with the orrery widget shown above.

1024x768
1280x960
1366x768
1280x720
1440x900
1920x1080 <- now included by request!

It works perfectly with my widgets, giving the underwidget and the steampunk orrery a place to 'be'.

Did you want the complete wallpaper, or just the desk?

Things have been kind of crazy here for the past couple of months. ::)
