I've recently lost a son that only lived for about 45 minutes, and I can share or don't share with who ever I want. I can't imagine what life would be like, when I would be famous. Every time being reminded in many ways, good or bad.

Mockary, glorification, envy, respect are all prices you have to pay for being famous. Weither your a pop star or wealthy business man. Although he never asked for being famous, Steve Jobs life was part of the public. Sadly, people will remember bad things better than good things from a person.

I know very little about Steve Jobs (and what he achieved and how he did it) except that he founded Apple.

I do know this though..my brother died of cancer three years ago aged 53...Steve jobs was 56. It doesn't matter  how big a bastard some people think he was as a business man...56 is no age to die. My sympathies go out to his family.

First off, my sympathies on your brother.  53, just like 56, is FAR too young.

And the good Captain is right-you may not like him PERSONALLY (hell, I was no fan of Dimebag Darrel, but I still give him props for what he did, Rest His Soul!), but he DID leave behind a family that he loved very much, and kept out of the media as much as possible.

If nothing else, THAT should count!

Buying, borrowing, stealing from others, make it more eccesable and sell it by the dozen. Although both have done their share of research, brain work and hands on work, they both will be remembered by their dark side.

Exactly my thoughts... I hated him and Apple as well as everything they stood for... People might like to bash Bill Gates and Microsoft, but were it not for Microsoft licensing its software for multiple platforms, we'd be still paying over $2000 for a personal computer, and not allowed to install anything except proprietary hardware (like Macs still are), and I dare say that the Open Source concept would never have gotten off the ground.

That said, my grudge against Jobs dies with him, and he deserved a better end: I wouldn't wish death from cancer on my worst enemy.  Therefore, I bid thee farewell oh worthy adversary.

I honestly can't say I liked the man or his company, but a fellow human being has died at too early an age. For that I give my condolences to his family, friends and the legion of apple followers. R.I.P

He made something from nothing, and became a technology leader. Which is more than most of us will ever do. Gotta count for something I guess...

I'm a Linux guy myself and tend to use PC, but still the man had his qualities, and he did turn Apple around as soon as he got back from NeXT.  Marketing not inventiveness.  Same for Bill gates; both shrewd businessmen and visionaries of consumerism.  But sometimes the execution is just as important as the idea.  Otherwise people just don't buy the technology; e.g. iPaq or Pocket PC anyone?? No? See what I mean?

As much as I may personally hate the single menu bar and one-button mouse (or mice in general) and agree with various Edison-esque comments, his company's  stuff works flawlessly and easily , as advertised,  for most of its users. None of my work ever came even close to that.

You had a great run, Steve. I hope what comes next is fun, or at least restful.

We have had our period of Mourning and Commiseration, but given the touchyness of the subject I am.... surprised that even though this is the nicest most civil place I've seen on the net, that a flamewar hasn't started (the Cyberpunk forum thread has degenerated into a full on battlefield of mines, trolls, flames aplenty, and all sorts of nasty. Though otherwise they seem a pleasant lot.)

I think that's an excellent idea, Lazaras. And, like the Corsair said, the OTHS could well be the best place for it afterwards.

He was a great marketer and developer of ideas.

Not an engineer, but neither am I.

For that matter Bill Gates has not written code in nearly 30 years either.

I wouldn't say he was a visionary, but he did affect the world, once Microsoft helped him develop the Mac (believe what you want, they both admit it, I don't care either way).


As to being 'too young to die'..... he had over half a century and left his family rich. I've buried too many friends who died without ever having the chance to get married, have kids (or at least see them grow up) or anything else in life, because they swore an oath and did what needed to be done.

Could he have lived longer? Yes he could. But when it's your time to go, it's your time. He knew it was coming and prepared for it.

You can't ask for much else. He had a good run and has nothing to complain about.

I do not agree with the various software solutions that have been decided upon in Apple's hardware, and I may have my differences of opinion when it comes to running a company etc., but that doesn't change the fact that Apple was a world-changing company, with Jobs being its equivalent of a rockstar.
