Funny how one thing leads to another: The first one was inspired by MW Bayley's topic on Appalachian music.  The second was just following Aaron Copeland's masterpieces.  And masterpieces they are!  The second one is particularly vibrant.  Even if you don't like classical music, I bet this one you will like. Copland has a way of translating folk music into classical format, and thus the message is easily understood and relatable.  I think the conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Carlos M. Prieto, had a lot of fun.

Breakin' up Christmas!

http://youtu.be/RPH3HR0wCjk

Just thought I should add, the celebration they did that included this song  was "Old Christmas," or what some folks call "Epiphany." It traditionally used to start on about Jan. 6 and lasted anywhere from three days to a whole fortnight in some parts of Appalachia, and people would literally move all the furniture out of the part of their house that they wished to dance in; in some cases, it became a sort of "progressive dance," in the same vein as the old churching pastime of the "progressive dinner," though I don't think they called it that back then. There is some tradition and the accompanying anecdotes that in some cases Puncheon Floor dancing (basically the same as "clogging") was done in order to smooth out a new or splintery wooden floor, a common problem with hand-installed wooden flooring back in those times.

Breakin' up Christmas and its fellow "christmas" dancing tunes typically used to go for a lot longer than two or three minutes, in some cases lasting, with breaks (individual solos, so to speak), for nearly twenty minutes or more, sometimes long enough for everybody in large groups (more than eight or so, in some cases twenty or thirty or more) to have a turn on the puncheon floor. In some cases the whole living room or kitchen floor, in some others (as in the movie Songcatcher), just a sort of wooden pallet with a small bit of flooring raised on wooden runners, for the hollow, booming rhythmic sound it produced when a single person clogged or 'buckdanced' on it.

Thus, the origin of the old "Let's kick up some splinters!" cry.

The tendency of the festivities to last beyond a few days, to a week, sometimes to a fortnight or more, is thought to have been part of the traditional "Hooray Martin, Hooray John" (Or whomever) shouts in the middle of the tune, performed in a slightly more traditional arrangement here:

since it often seemed that people were trying to make the holiday last longer than it properly should.

Okay, I'll shut up about that now, at least in this thread...

I listen to a lot of varied stuff, mainly because I've hosted a web-radio show for the last two and a half years. The bands I'm currently listening to are Type O Negative, Fable Cry, Myth of Progress and Necronomicon. There's so much cool stuff out there ....

I think this is one of the most evocative songs / videos I've seen on utube ( esp fan made ),  Giegers illustrations work well with it IMO and for me , at least, put me in another place entirely - or dare I say it time...

Ulver's themselves are quite an interesting group considering their origins and where they are now. Unfortunately it seems the original videos been altered and not quite the same , or same impact but still good.

As a great fan of AlienSexFiend, that would be 'Now I'm feeling zombified'.
