So what are everyone's thoughts on the next doctor? Will it be a woman doctor?

I just hope the Doctor isn't a ginger.

I think what's needed now is an older doctor, at least 40's and looking it. Should be English too :P

Will be male, white, and a bit older. That's my prediction.

My favourite Dr was Patrick Troughton - cowardly enough to be brave, & get away with it!

I suspect it will become a batty uncle type of Doctor, rather the strange guy you met at the library that Tennant and Smith were. It will be more like Troughton and McCoy with a little Pertwee and Davison (Eccleston was the strange guy you would meet at the Docks/down an alley and McGann you would meet at a poetry recital). Colin Baker was never a good Doctor to me, so I hope we never get one like him again.

Ben Daniels has been mentioned, he must be about 40 now but too (date I say it?) too good-looking.  I've also heard Damian Moloney's name (Hal form Being Human) as a maybe.  And Russell Tovey (but I never really bought that - he's good, but too good at nervous types).  Don't mind about ginger (one of the ginger twins from Harry Potter, don't remember the name has been bandied about in my circle, but I never thought either of them could act).  And what DW needs is a good actor, one with energy, verve, the ability to surprise and be deadly serious, perhaps even dangerous, mercurial.  Obviously Cumberbatch would be great, but I think he's too high-profile now - unless we get American money into DW.  And that, I am afraid, would kill it.  Look at Torchwood.  Nuff said.

Not going to name him but today's press has named someone specific and claim he has actually been asked.
They apparently await his reply.

I read that... I'm not sure about the truth of it though. But why not ? It would be nice to have someone more mature playing the role.

Ladbrokes have taken it seriously. All official betting is now suspended.

How many people remember the old joke about looking it up in Who's Who.

I`m just going to wait and see who becomes the new Doctor. All this speculating :p     (though I wouldn`t mind if Alexander Vlahos would become Doctor. But he might be just a tad too young IMO)

My feeling is we will not know until either the end of the 50 Year Special or nearer to the Christmas Special.

Pretty sure it won't be a woman for a while (the regular speculation is too good). It'll probably be a woman after the 13th Doctor (using the regerations he got from River Song as an explanation would be an interesting way around the limit I think).

TBH I'm not too bothered who they get in (as long as they're half decent) I jsut hope they keep Mark Gaitiss on as a writer (preferably the head scriptwriter), his episodes were the best of the last series IMHO.

Something occurred to me recently. Doctor Who and Torchwood have a history of 'recycling' actors by casting them in new roles. Off the top of my head, Karen Gillan, Freema Agyeman, Naoko Mori and Eve Myles all played minor roles before being cast as full-time characters (complete with some slightly dubious explanations, eg I think they said Martha was her own cousin).

So who would you choose to be the Doctor who has already appeared in the show? My first thoughts would be Ardal O'Hanlan, Derek Jacobi or Bill Nighy. Basically anybody but James Corden or Peter Kay.

Madasasteamfish

Derek Jacobi would make a brilliant doctor in the Patrick Troughton mould, but he was FAR too good as the master  (well at least the last few minutes of his performance, before he regenerated into John Simm) for him to be cast as the doctor.

I would love to see Bill Nighy as the Doctor.
Or for that matter, Bill Nye  ;D

Can we keep the discussion about who will fill the role to a minimum, please? It will be announced at the end of summer. End of August, maybe Sepember, at least that's what the rumour mill says.

So, you'd like rabid Doctor Who fans to keep discussions, rumours and speculation about a new Doctor to a minimum. Good luck with that.

I might just have to abandon the thread until there's a definite answer.
