What Moffat needs to do is make the equivalent of Blink for sofa's. Whereas Blink terrified children of statues and forced them to hide behind sofa's making them terrified of sofa's will add a whole new level of terror for children, leaving them no safe space between them and the monster.

I was just perusing the IMDB entry for the movie 'World War Z' which  features one Peter Capaldi as a doctor working for the World Health Organisation. He's credited as W.H.O Doctor

Spooky or wot?
I say, Joe it's jolly frightening out here.
Nonsense dear boy, you should be more like me.

Peter Capaldi isn't the 12th Doctor, he is merely pretending to be, and 11 will regenerate into someone totally different. The W.H.O Doctor, the announcement is intended to put everyone off the scent.

OR...

the Malcolm Tucker version is the true version, and Doctor Who will move to a late night schedule and no longer be a childrens program?

To Mr Peter Harrow re scary sofa.
Back in the 1970s The Autons/Nestene Consciousness had a plastic chair swallow a man.
I think it was meant to be an inflatable chair which was new and fashionable back then.

Neil Gaiman told me, and I took his word for it.  ;)

(between you me and the doorpost, I suspect it was Idris Elba).

Actually I should point out, I read a different article to this, which did not clarify it wasn't the role of the twelfth Dr but a previous one (my money is still on Elba though).

Interesting. The Moff says they only auditioned Peter this time around. Honestly, if it's Moffat's word against Gaiman's, I lean towards trusting Gaiman. :D

As a child , for reasons that I can no longer recall, I was terrified of the yeti in Doctor Who. One of the few occasions where I actually did watch from 'behind the sofa'. Looking at them now they are indeed  big cuddly and Womble-like. The story where they were lurking in the London Underground and  had guns that  coccooned their victims in a sort of web substance gave me a fear of the Tube that lasted a couple of years. I would have been 8-9 years old at the time.

I had the same reaction to the puppet in The Talons of Weng-Chiang. To this day I cannot look at a ventriloquists dummy without wanting to rip its head off.
May the gods stand between you and harm, in all the empty places where you must walk.

Is it just me or is there something of the "Doctor Who and the Daleks" Peter Cushing vibe about Peter Capaldi?

Just imagine him after having drunk a glass of particularly foamy milk...
Well sir, if that's your attitude I'm not interested in your water tank!

Sorry I probably should have worded that more clearly. Apparently it was the role of the eleventh Doctor that was offered to an unnamed black actor not the twelfth. The article I originally read made it sound like it was the twelfth, but in this one Gaiman seems to have clarified it wasn't. Obviously Gaiman also favours Paterson Joseph, that doesn't necessarily mean he was in the running this time.

So this happened supposedly before the role went to Matt Smith. The reason I suspect it was Idris Elba, is because I could see him turning it down for various reasons. Type casting and general work load again very possibly being two of them. His Hollywood profile is obviously on the rise, he has just appeared in Pacific Rim I believe. And yes Dr Who is one of those roles that can become strongly associated with an actor, even if they are known for other things, let alone if they are a relative unknown.

This is the reason Eccleston left, and is also the reason I suspect Peter Capaldi may not stay for more than a couple of series, but really who knows?

This article figures it was Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Another strong possibility, I do remember hearing some reports of him being in the running back then. The thing about Chiwetel is, despite being an award winning actor, I'm still unsure how well known he is to the average member of the British public (obviously that doesn't necessarily make a difference, but would in terms of someone actually being offered the role I would think). I must be honest I really mainly know him from Serenity myself. Back in 2009 Idris Elba was about to star in the office and had signed up to do Luther, which really made him a household name here.

It's interesting to note both actors appeared in American Gangster. I guess it's all speculation until confirmed by someone in the know. I would stick my neck out and say we can be almost 100% certain it was one or the other, and I'm pretty sure they could both do an excellent job.

Benedict Cumberbatch may be a mouthful but there's no discrepancy about the pronounciation. I don't know if Chiwetel Ejiofor is pronouced CHY-wettal Eye-GEE-ofor..or Chee-WEE-tel Edge-EYE-O-for..or CHEEWY-tel EDGEY-o-FOR...or wot?

It was several years of being aware of Richard Ayoade (Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, The IT Crowd, Nathan Barley etc) that I found out his surname is pronounced 'Eye-O-waddy' and not 'A-Yode' as I thought.

Ah yes, I believe there was actually a campaign for Richard Ayoade to be the twelfth Dr, that could've work well too, still who knows what the future has in store. (I actually thought it was eye yoda so shows what I know).

I've also just discovered I've been pronouncing Chiwetel Ejiofor wrong.  :D

According to wikipedia, Ejiofor hasn't done much TV, so would probably fail the "well what would I have seen him in?" test.

For what it's worth, I thought he was excellent in The Shadow Line. It's one of the best British dramas I've seen in the last few years. Coincidentally it also stars Christopher Eccleston (but I think the stand out actor was Stephen Rea as the wonderfully sinister Gatehouse).

Chiwetel is good, very very good. If it was him that turned it down, that's a great shame. But I have to say, I'm not sure the timing would have been right back in 2009. I do think after Peter, who am I am very sure is going to do an excellent job, things really could take that kind of twist, and I think folks will genuinely be ready for that.

On a side note, did you know Benedict's full name is Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch! Again shows what I know, because honestly if somebody sat me down and said, pick a name that's going to get you ahead in life, I honestly don't think it would be that one.  :D

Also on a side note (as you never know who's reading these threads). I demand an appearance from Rose Leslie in the next series. For those of you that don't know, this young woman is frackin amazing! She had a role in Downton Abbey, and is currently in Game Of Thrones. All this time I have been convinced she was genuinely a northern lass as she's always had such a convincing accent. But nope, she is actually Scottish, and yet still has the most gorgeously plummy English accent ever. And with a name like Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie, well you just can't go wrong now can you.

So come on Dr Who peeps, make it happen!

True, but the days of changing your name (or being persuded to by an agent) because it didn't sound 'right' are long gone (Francis Gumm, Doris Kappelhoff,  Issur Danielovitch, Bernie Schwartz* etc) Nowadays most actors stick with their given names no matter how 'odd' they may sound. And you certainly aren't going to forget a name like Benedict Cumberbatch in a hurry!
