Be sure to keep us informed on the 9 planet build as well!

It's nice to have the proper gear for the
job, isn't it...

"WHAT?! N0!!! NOT THAT Button!!!"

Mechanism Man

I will do Maets, and thanks Herr Doktor!
The gears themselves are all cut on my trusty beat up old scroll saw - it's quite relaxing and very time consuming, but you avoid the horrible blackened burnt edges that you get with laser cutting. There are 48 gears here (some were cut doubled up where possible) and it's taken about 2 weeks of part time whittling to get this far. The finished machine has to be in New York for September 25th - no pressure then...
Oh well,  it's Thorpe Park and roller coaster riding all day tomorrow with my daughter and then back at it on Wednesday all day - can't wait!
More soon.

Hooray! All the hard work is now done - all the gearing is now cut, with the last few spoke holes finished about 10 minutes ago. All that's left is sanding and varnishing to finish them off and then it's time to cut the frames.
The gear cutting is by far and away the longest job, but if you take a bit of time with it and get it right then the rest of the machine goes together so much more easily.
More soon.

Never ask 'Why?'
Always ask 'Why not!?'

Mechanism Man

Gearing finished and ready to fit - thought I was never going to get there.
Now time for the frames. :-)

Mechanism Man

We have gears, and as of last night we have frames - must be time for a bit of assembly at last!

Mechanism Man

Well it's finally growing. Progress from here on in is usually quite quick, which is lucky, as it has to be finished by the 20th. Yes Frances - Gulp...
Anyhow, so far so good.

A twinge of excitement when a new entry appeared from you as an unread post.  Couldn't wait to click and see the next step.  Looking GOOD.

Mechanism Man

Thanks Maets - I can't remember the last time I gave anybody a twinge of excitement!

Great progress today, just hope that it continues!

At my age, any excitement I can get is good.  ;D

Probably the precision in your work that is so intriguing.

SeVeNeVeS

I have to echo the previous comment........ WOW!

Handcrafted precision at its very best!

The gear box is finished! I finally got the lid on late last night - there is still a lot to do, but that's a big hurdle out of the way.
Top mechanism next, and 8 days till the deadline. Gulp.

More soon.

Prof. Cecily

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
So impressive. I'm quite certain your project shall receive the admiration it deserves in the exhibition!

I remain yours,

Banfili

Oh...... my .....word!
Hell's flaming, brazen hinges that is a job and a half!  :o

Mechanism Man

Finished! No planet decorating on this one thank goodness, so it's now ready to hey boxed and shipped. The photos actually show it just before I replaced the winding handle for something nicer, and there were still a couple of fixing pins to trim from the top mechanism, but other than that, here's the finished article.
Right, back to the reason for starting the thread I guess! Can't wait.

Words fail me ... but that is just so bloody BRILLIANT!

Maets

Beautiful work.  A video perhaps?

Thanks for all of the WIP shots.
