Wrench

I really like wrenches. They're pretty :) So that.. is why I chose "Wrench" as my username xD
Although, I do find that tongs and pliers are more fun to use...

OldProfessorBear

Been using it for years. Partly based on a now-forgotten line of greeting cards from the 80s/90s, partly on my age, and partly on my occupation at the time I adopted it.

Just seems appropriate.

The Lone Cat Charmer

Well, it is 'The Lone Cat Charmer' for the reason that many years ago, cats have flocked to my property for no apparent reason! And I have befriended over 10 kitties! However, not a single one appears anymore... not a SINGLE one! (and my own cat died a while ago). Other cats in the same neighbourhood flee from presence :(

However, nowadays, it is not uncommon for me to run into kitties that rawr/meow and want to cuddle/leave fur all over your jeans!
Thus the name, besides, there is something whimisical about being a 'Lone' charmer...
It is also that image, of strolling down the street all clad in gear and you meet a kitty and then spend countless hours with it in a grey afternoon... ah
Soon I shall train a cat... to sit on my head... everyday

Jakoby T Simmeon

Back at the Dawn of Time (1980) I was given the nickname Ape. Years later I worked as a bouncer in a *ahem* "Gentleman's Club". The DJ there was also named Jake and the girls started referring to me as Jake the Ape. So I steamified/mad-scienced it up. Misspellings are intentional.
Adventurer - Contraptionist - Scientist - Slightly Mad

Em

I have a terrible memory, I like to think I can remember at least two letters when signing in.
"I like old things, they make me feel sad."
     "What's good about sad?"
"It's happy for deep people."

Vancouver Air Privateer

Well, I love my hometown...So I put that in...then I noticed a distinct lack of airships or privateers in Vancouver...so I decided to remedy this and become the first V.A.P.
"Blessed be Science and her handmaiden Steam;
They make Utopia only half a dream."

"So he pulls an alternating-current taser on me and tells me that only the Official Serbian Church of Tesla can save my polyphase intrinsic electric field, known to non-engineers as 'the soul.' "

von Corax

When I first joined Brass Goggles, I did not wish to use my real name because a) I tend to be a bit paranoid about privacy and b) I wanted something that would get me "into the spirit" of Steampunk.

My real last name is derived from the Norman word for "raven", and the Common Raven answers to the Latin name corvus corax. The "von" is simply a mad-scientist flourish.

When I'm fully "in character" I answer to Professor Darwin Prætorius von Corax. (See my thread Name, Rank and... Wait, Name?) Darwin is, of course, a reference to Charles and his grandfather Erasmus (but used more as a generic sciency reference than for any specific significance). Prætorius just sounded pleasantly big and pretentious, although it may have been subconsciously inspired by the Narbonic character "Dave Pretorius". Also, my real initials are DPC.

Why "Professor?" "Mister" just seemed a bit commonplace, and I didn't want to arrogate any sort of unearned noble or military rank; also I wanted to tie into the Leverkusen Institute of Paleocybernetics (a rather oblique reference to a former employer) and to carry through the mad-scientist theme. And so I became

Prof. D. P. von Corax, Director
The Leverkusen Institute of Paleocybernetics

Sadly, not a Doctor, thanks to those short-sighted fools at the Academy. Especially the narrow-minded cretins on the so-called "Ethics Review Board." Mock me, would they? Question the "moral validity" of my research? Pah! I'll show them. I'll show them all! They will rue the day they laughed at Darwin Prætorius von Corax! MWAHAHAHAhaha... haha... heh... erm.

*Ahem.*

Mr. Fenn

I've used Fenn as a username elsewhere, and thought Mr. Fenn would sound more formal. I considered Captain, Doctor, Professor, etc, but settled on just Mr. Figured it would be more fitting for a more rough and ready airship mechanic type, which is the persona I've decided is most fitting.

Fenn is a shortened version of the name of a paladin I used to play back when AD&D was just hitting 2nd Edition.

Sean Patrick O-Byrne

My middle names are Shawn and Patrick. My grandfather was Brian, so it was going to be S. P. O'Brian, but at the last moment I changed my mind and made it Sean Patrick O'Byrne. I'm pleased with it still.

Lady Lavinea Dreadful

the Boo part comes from a nickname my husband gave me. having to do with Balders gate,a hamster, and my lack of ability to pay attention when any thing shiny is around...similar to the afformentioned rodent... the Ms part comes in from a friend who called everyone Ms this or Mr. that... no idea why. and the Dreadful part comes in because i write penny dreadfuls. dull...i know... oh well. and not steamy in the least.

Capt_Zaphod

Ummm...it's my favorite fictional character - Zaphod Beeblebrox, with the title Captain.

Jemima Annabelle Clough

Mine's based on a character of mine who is what and who I would like to be if it was an alternative version of the 1800s, with a hollow earth, and so on... or something.

"Viagra Chapstick" - For that stiff upper lip                         I dont have an anger management problem I just like to solve my problems with violence

neon_suntan

Many moons ago on a big distributed Vax/VMS system i was known as Kurtz

The Neon Suntan was from the first line of a song I wrote around the same time, the concept being that  Neon Suntan was no-suntan-at-all, I would have used the phrase "Pixeltan"

Captain_Minty_Gearhertz

Captian is for my airship ownership (i wish) Minty is my nickname as I love Fox's glacier mints and i go by peppermint_mecha on most other places. Gearhertz is a mixture of Gear and Hertz sounds slightly better than heart when i was thinking of great aviators.
The music is reversable, but time...is not.

Sir Nikolas of Vendigroth

Those who understand my name in this place will understand that it's most appropriate. Many others won't get my reference, though.

Arcturon the hobo

I got dragged to an anime convention and was asked to cosplay.

I don't really like anime, so I invented one called Barbucron 5 and said that I was cosplaying as Arcturon the Space Hobo and even brought along my fire staff and said it was the staff of Morkal which Arcturon had used to end the battle of a thousand galaxies in episode 265.

Some people said they remembered it . . . .
I dropped the space for this site.

Jackanory

My name's Jack, I have been called Jackanory on occasion, it's also the name I use when cartooning/illustrating. 'Nuff said!

akumabito

AKUMABITO >> Informal term for "demon" or "spirit". Japanese origin. The first "A" is not clearly pronounced. "Akuma" means devil or demon, and "bito" refers to a person (HITO). The "H" in HITO changes to "B" after certain vowels.

BrethrenAndBetrayer

Mine's a reference to Thief: Deadly Shadows. I love thief.

CaptainFynnOMalleyEsq.

Well, my name comes from my steampunk alter-ego (not my real ego since I have a distinct lack of *anything* even vaguely neo-victorian), a Mr. Captain Fynn O'Malley, Esquire.

Mr. Captain, how can this be, I hear you ask... well, I pretend I do so I can explain. My character comes from a destitute family of Irish immigrants, coming to mainland Britain when the famine hit. Being slightly pretentious, they named their firstborn "Captain".

Fynn is just a name I *really* like. Really really.

And O'Malley is a generic Irish name. Course, it helps that I'm actually half-Irish, not just some poseur :P.

I would suggest styrine, certainly, especially plasticard.  Then again, I'm of the opinion that plasticard is the correct answer to any situation.

Emmeline X

Good job I did forum search, I was about to post this exact topic  :o
My username is "Emmeline" for the quintessential Victorian/Edwardian radical suffragette, and "X" because I wanted a bit of mystery; Emmeline X is a persona, in my mind she's a high brow Victorian lady who drinks tea in fine tea rooms, and is, for all intents and purposes, the perfect upper class Victorian woman. But in reality she's a mad tinkerer/radical who hates the monarchy and all that it stands for so her good breeding is a subterfuge for her real purpose: Dissent.
