I mainly make one hellova mess, but anything really, I try to use other peoples unwanted wood, alot of copper pipe, I've done a couple of heating radiators.
All I make is part of the big plan to try and make my home look slightly different, but also fit the Steampunk aesthetic.

Hello all! I'm a long time lurker, but have finally decided to set down roots and make the necessary introductions! I'm a tinkerer who likes making electronical objects and housing them in shellacked wood and brass, so steampunk has always been a bit of an aesthetic inspiration. Anyhow, I'm glad to be here and look forward to the conversations and inspiration.

I worked in [aerospace] "electronicals" for 34 years.
And now (being retired) I, too, work in wood and brass and copper and [occasionally] aluminium and steel.

Two nixie tube clocks....one to be a gift and one for myself. Since I've never done one before I thought I would build one for myself in tandem (and in stages) with the one that is the gift; i.e.  do some thing with mine, and if that works out, do it on the "gift" one. If it doesn't work out, I only have to modify mine. This is still very early stages.

In fact all but two of my projects are early to mid stage. I do 90% of my woodworking at an [ongoing] class offered by the local community college. But we got shut down mid semester last spring (you already know the reason) and then this past fall semester didn't happen at all. So all woodworking has been put on hold . And most of my projects incorporate wood.

So 4 the others are part of a bigger project, which is steampunking my computer (except for the tower... I have a desktop...and the tower is hidden out of sight).
I did  the keyboard first back in 2018 (which is in the Tactile forum Captain Nemo's Keyboard) and was about a third of the way through the monitor when my WW class got shut down.

Two of the embellishments for the monitor turned out to be too big, so I am incorporating them into bookends (they will light up). But now I have to re-do those embellishment for the monitor, but scaled down a bit.

Am about 3/4 of the way through a "Switching Box"  (I call it the "Eigenflux Plasma Controller") which lights up and has moving parts, but I need to cut a few pieces of wood for the some internal structural support, so that is on hold.

Got some brass and other embellishments , and "dead mouse" from Goodwill, and took it apart to start planning how to do the mouse. That  will be a challenge.

Am finishing up the steampunking of a USB connector... that should be ready in a couple of weeks  (lots of tiny parts on that, also a challenge).

And lastly I decided to steampunk my wastebasket.... but that will be a lot of wood (with embellishments and lights).... so the wood cutting for that will be this semester, which as far as I know, is a still a "go".  I've drawn it up (wood-wise)  and have the stuff I want to attach to it, just haven't laid it out as to what goes where.
And it won't look like a wastebasket. You won't even know it's a wastebasket.

BTW For years (like 6 years now!) I've dabbled on writing a hyper-realistic novel (never posted here - just developed characters and background stories) called "The Valkyrie and the Eagle" (hence the logo on my signature) that is vaguely similar to your "The Great War."

The main difference being that mine revolves around an extension of the Second French Intervention in Mexico by the French and the Austrian (from real life when  Prince Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria was invited by the Mexican nobility to became 2nd Emperor of Mexico), and the Confederate States ask for - and receive help from France not without forcing the hand of an unwilling Emperor Franz Joseph to lend a hand to his somewhat innocent brother Maximilian (which would never happen in real life as he hated his little brother and forced him to renounce all rights and privileges from the Austro Hungarian Empire). The United States then forms an alliance with the German States under the guidance of Otto Von Bismarck. To throw a bit of craziness, I invent a hero of the Aerial Battle over Sonora, a Bavarian born Texican who sides with the Union after graduating from West Point: Admiral Johannes Wilhelm (at your service) who as a young captain captures a stratospheric-capable airship (KuK Walkure --> CSAA Alamo), a craft which uses a technology  much higher than the Americans have. Here I get to exercise a but of my knowledge as an aerospace engineer.

Then I invent a complimentary sidekick, Lt General Julin Bahlmann (my other alter ego), originally a Bavarian airship engineer, who was captured aboard CSAA Alamo by Wilhelm and pressed into service by Abraham Lincoln under Wilhelm along his crew aboard the Alamo, now re-christened USAS Orca. Bahlamnn and his crew all belong to a strange ancient race of humans known since the Late Roman Period as Engelfolk (Angel People). The Engelfolk, which are my only flight of of fancy in the novel, are actually a people persecuted and or / feared in the German states as they are basically a "3rd gender" race, somewhat similar to the mythical "Alfar" (Elves) as described in the ancient Scandinavian Prose Eddas by Snorri Sturluson. Prior to the war there is a mass exodus of Engelfolk from northern German states to the southern German states, and they cross from Bavaria into Switzerland and Austria seeking military jobs as some sort of refuge. They become known a "Lutschiffengel" (Airship Angels) and mostly serve as crew who are fairly impervious to the effects of high altitude and can work in tight spaces.

As the war progresses, Queen Victoria is forced to hush the alliances machinated by British industrialists with the Confederate states (contemplated in real life), and she allies with the United States, on the grounds that Napoleon III (character from real life during during the 2nd French intervention) would likely capture the whole of the cotton industry in the Confederate South and leave Britain without a source of cotton, which at the time was a new industry (real life) made possible by southern slavery. Russia then tags along for good measure in the "Northern Alliance" (I haven't developed that background yet) and a global conflict ensues (I'd call it "World War Zero in the Prologue, but not in the body of the text). Axis Airships cruise to the Americas "the wrong way round" over Eurasia by using the tropical atmospheric jet streams, cruising as fast as a WWII bomber could, and that's what makes the global war possible,

I have the Northern Alliance win the conflict (sorry man - that's the way I roll  ) But the real historical ties between Austria, Mexico and France (real life) are very interesting to me - and close to my own history (I'm an American raised in Mexico from French/Italian/Basque family on my mother's side, and Ive spent 28 yrs in Texas and have some German family too). There's an awful lot of European and Mexican history that my fellow Americans never get to study, and which Steampunk allowed me to exercise, showcase, and meld with my American History minor - these are my historian muscles, so to speak...

Anyhow, I digress. It's all very interesting to me, please carry on!

I'm a semi-professional artist living in the highlands of Scotland.

I had an old account on here as a teenager, maybe 5-8 years ago? Since I have unfortunatly lost the password and email for it so have decided to start a new. I'll admit that whilst I still have a love for the crafts and history behind steampunk it's not played a large part in my life in recent years. I haven't found the time to make craft projects for my own sake and have lost the confidence to dress as vintage as I once did.
I'm mostly here for the community and to ask a bunch of questions...I'm unlikely to bring much in the way of new projects to the table.

Interests and things of interest about me are as follows:

- I mostly paint fantasy characters in watercolour
- I love single player storybased games, Sunless Sea being at the top of the list
- I enjoy learning about folklore/mythology and history, though not so much in a dates/kings way and more everyday life
- I like anime and manga, comics and tv shows with more psychological plots..or fantasy
- Hippy childhood, for a good chunk of my live I spent the winters in India and summers at music festivals, home educated in my teens
- Did a year of animation at college and though I don't know a great deal about game design, beyond messing around on game maker as a kid, I'm really intrested and would love to learn more
- I played D&D as a teenager and have been in withdrawal from it ever since. I adore D&D, but there's no players in my area.

For the past 2-3 years I've had an undiagnosed tiredness problem, possibly chronic fatigue, I have a limited amount of energy to work with in a day which gets in the way of daily life, projects and likely my activeness on this forum. Please don't feel offended if my replies are shorter than you deserve or if I disappear for a while.

We're back to normal weather. Winter started very normal last year, scratching the freezing mark and a tiny snow flurry in December which is normal. But then when we though it was over, February not usually the coldest month gave us a big surprise. Right after the snow storm week  we jumped past normal temperature to a small heatwave (!) at about 27C (80F) range, and then the following week we went down to a more normal 10C (50F) range.

The costume is for my second persona which I started developing around 2013. We have a thread from 2017 where I wrote a bit about, in this post (the post above that is my first persona). Both characters belong to a novel I've been not really finishing called "The Valkyrie and the Eagle" inspired by the characters themselves:

I've had this idea for a suitable location high in an alpine setting or snow capped mountains. Since snow is rare in Central Texas, I was always thinking of taking a trip to a suitable location. At first the Monday after Valentine's looked great. Alas, the power company had other plans, and residential plumbing was not ready for 9 days of sub-zero temperatures. So there was never a chance to do a photoshoot. Something which is quite normal in other parts of the country.  

This was one of the locations I was thinking about for travel (outside of the US on a volcano near Mexico City, to fit the story of my novel) :

I know some people in Texas that had to face subzero temperatures and the rest in uninsulated homes. My heart goes out to all, and hopefully things will be improved so as to avoid a repeat.

I'm working up another Steampunk outfit now, along with a Dieselpunk set. I have a persona for each, the conceit is a family of adventuresome women thru the ages, I even have 2 Star Trek Online characters that are distant-descendants of this family, in the Starfleet of the 23rd and 25th Centuries.

I am a designer of un-designable designs, a maker of un-makable makings, a creator of uncreated creations, and more. I do all of my Scraptacular Creations (this is the name of my small business) inside my Scraptaculab, (which is the name of my workshop). At only 60 years young, my Scraptaculab is my happy place where I love to spend hours with gallons of good coffee, all of my tools and machines, an ample supply of old cogs and gears, brass and copper sheeting, wood, metal, and whatever else that I might need to create more Scraptacular Creations. Currently busy with some serious decor items for a local coffee shop/bistro, including a 3 meter long "Zeppelin type" airship light fixture.
I have also been a professional clown for the past 34 years, but due to Covid, now semi-retired from that until further notice.
