Four Tenets of Steampunk

A very nice series , madam.

I can't say if this is the case elsewhere in the world (although a number of exchanges here on Brass Goggles suggest it might be), but one distinguishing feature of the steampunk community in New Zealand is how supportive we are of each other.  This manifests not only in our sincere appreciation of each other's creations, whether garment or gadget, but in more personal ways.  You may know that our city of Christchurch was hit with a severe earthquake five years ago - the rebuild is continuing.  You may not know thatthey had another one just a couple of weeks ago.  It didn't cause anything like the damage of the 2011 one, but the communications networks of the local steampunk groups immediately lit up with messages of concern and support.

Another example.  The wife of one of our community has recently experienced some particularly nasty mental issues, from which she has, thankfully, now emerged.  During the worst of this, the NZ steampunk community arranged a system where her young daughter would receive some small gift every few days, just because we could.

That's something I've noticed about steampunks - with the odd exception, we're actually rather nice people.  Maybe that's a combination of mindfulness, courtesy and splendidness!

I'm glad to hear that so much good work is being done by steampunks in New Zealand, and the community you describe sounds like it's been built by a group of amazing people. Even in the face of the hardships you've mentioned, it's an incredible thing to know that there are people who will jump up and be involved. And giving gifts to that little girl is one of the most creative, splendid things I've ever heard of.
