Want to start a separate topic.

I want to tell about Russian and Soviet films. We're almost steampunk movies. But Fima about which I want to tell, they like me and want to share with you.

If such a theme is not necessary, the moderators will correct me. :)))

Sorry, I'm not on all the films I can give the link, and even more so with the translation.

But if You look these movies, or have already watched (is watching "Professor Dowell's Head) I would be interested to know your impressions.

Start with the basics.

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

"The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson" — cycle of the Soviet films 1979-1986 years directed by Igor Maslennikov, a screen adaptation of the works of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The cycle consists of five films (11 episodes total duration of 766 min).

The very positive feedback the series received in England. Critics have pointed out that the creators of the show carefully treated the original, and the works of Conan-Doyle passed with true love the true connoisseurs of the classics of the detective genre.

In 2005, Vasily Livanov became an honorary member (MBE) order of the British Empire for the best screen image of Sherlock Holmes, embodied not by the British, and on 15 June 2006 the British Ambassador in Moscow he was awarded with the badge of the order.

In Moscow near the British Embassy is a sculpture depicting Holmes and Watson in the performance of Livanov and Solomin.

"Alexander Nevskiy" — Soviet art historical film about the medieval Russian Prince, who won the battle with the Teutonic knights on lake Peipus April 5, 1242. Belongs to the galaxy a classic of Soviet historical films of 30-ies and is considered one of the best works of Sergei Eisenstein. The music for the film was written by the famous composer Sergei Prokofiev.

These two names, Eisenstein and Prokofiev, already that would be enough to watch a movie.

The film is certainly old, a lot of historical inaccuracies and Quaker guns. BUT I still gladly revise it.

And the music from the film, it is firmly established in our culture. Here are the main musical themes.

"Arise, you Russian people!" — choir In a Patriotic theme, "Arise, Russian people!" Prokofiev included ancient motifs and sounds of folk musical instruments.
One day, a rumor has spread that if the broadcast of the film on TV, cut this fragment. This caused serious scandal in the Internet.

A bit of humor. A short funny movie.

"Neptune Holiday". Soviet full-length color feature film put on a film Studio "Lenfilm" in 1986. The film was the debut for Director Yuri Mamin and by script writer Vladimir Vardunas.

Here is the movie page on the website of the Director, it's in English, I think there is more convincingly set out the reasons why you need to watch the movie. http://www.yurimamin.com/EN/9/

For the lazy, the retelling of the story.

The action takes place on the eve of 1986. Every year on 1 January in the village of Small Heels is the "Feast of Neptune". And each year, management regularly reported to the top of the beautiful figures on the participation of workers in the health and fitness event. Actually no celebration in sight, the hope was that on the morning of January 1 no one will ever come in a distant district center. But once out of the center came a telegram that 1 January is coming to share the experience of a group of walruses from Sweden, learned about such a massive event.

The management of the district does everything possible and impossible that the deception is not revealed.

It's a great movie. It really should look. Lots of meanings, lots of humor, lots of unusual. In Russia it has become a cult.

"Kin-DZA-DZA!" — full-length two-part Comedy feature film in the genre of dystopia, filmed at the Studio "Mosfilm" film Director Georgi Daneliya. The film was released on 1 December 1986.

Ordinary people suddenly find themselves on another planet. Planet desert planet the trash. It ordered the wasteland from Mad max. Only instead of aggressive gangs, petty thieves and hard cops. A lot, a lot of rust.

The Terrans really want to go home. They will be fleeced to the bone, they will work as street musicians, they will arrange a coup, will visit the "humane" civilization, but to return home.

It's not action. Although there is a Superman - uncle Vova.

If I had the chance, I would be all forced to see this movie.

Oh yeah. It is simply called "Aelita" (Аэлита).

"Aelita" — the classical Soviet silent film by Yakov Protazanov, free adaptation of the eponymous science fiction novel by A. N. Tolstoy.

I read this book. There is no Pro-earth adventures and torments the engineer Elk. I'm still amazed at the simplicity and humdrum beginning of the novel.
Quote
At four o'clock, in St. Petersburg, on the Avenue of Red dawn, there was a strange announcement, is a small, gray paper sheet, nailed carnations to peeling wall of a deserted house.

The correspondent of the American newspaper, Skills Archibald passed by, he saw standing before the bare announcement, a young woman in calico, a neat dress, she was reading, moving her lips. Tired and lovely face of the woman did not Express surprise, - his eyes were indifferent, clear, and with the craziness. She took a strand of wavy hair behind her ear, picked up from the sidewalk with a basket of herbs and walked across the street.

The announcement deserved a lot of attention. Skills, wondering at it, read it, moved closer and ran his hand across his eyes, read again:

- Twenty three, ' he said, finally, that should mean: "the devil take me with my bones".

In the ad was:

"Engineer, M. S. Los, invites, wanting to fly with him on August 18 on the planet Mars, to be for personal negotiations from 6 to 8 PM. Zhdanovskaya embankment, house 11 in the yard".

It was written and commonly just an ordinary ink pen.

Interesting fact about the film:

The film was released on 25 September 1924 in Moscow in the cinema "ARS", with music written specifically for the film by Vladimir Kruchinin. The film was preceded by an unprecedented advertising campaign in Newspapers, which began about six months before the premiere on February 26, 1924 in "Cinema Newspaper" (published by the film company "Mezhrabpom-Rus"), first published intriguing ads with the text "ANTA... ODELI... UTA..." — without any explanations (but in some cases, several such ads on the same page). From 15 April the ads were accompanied by explanatory text: "for some time radio stations around the world began to receive strange signals..." Closer to the premiere (on September 19) for the campaign was connected to the newspaper "Pravda" in which a mysterious signal has been reproduced in a more "transparent" form: "Anta... odELI... uTA" and in the advertisement, published on September 24, an intriguing inscription was directly included in the announcement of the premiere screening of the film in the cinema "ARS".

But "Mars" suits and the "Martians" is popular at the time in Soviet Russia constructivism. 20-ies, they were full of a new, flight of thought of searching.

Well, the fact is that the "punk" in "Steampunk" came AFTER the word "Steampunk" was invented  ;) Dieselpunk and Atompunk follow Steampunk.

While I won't deny that Steampunk now has elements of punk - and thus the social dystopia you talk about, Steampunk is a lot more general than that. What I will agree with, is that Solaris is not retro-futurist, and thus may not belong the the family of Atompunk, properly speaking...

The original novel by Lem is very cerebral, and focuses primarily on the science aspect of the story, while the Russian movie created a more global view that encompassed all aspects existential, sci-fi, and romantic as well.  The American movie was a melodramatic plot surrounding the romantic relationship between the psychologist and his dead wife (different names between the movies and novel). I thought the Russian movie's plot was much better, though at times could be very tedious.

The existential aspect of Solaris is very important- pondering on the significance of being human. Can you "capture a soul" in such a way? Are you a mere copy? Or are you the same? Limited by the memories of those who recreated you on Solaris?

Solaris is a "cult classic" movie, and while not being cyberpunk, it does go well with other cyberpunk movies that often touvh on the existential aspect of beiong human (e.g. Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, etc.)  What does it mean to be human?

I'm not a literary critic, but I can see that.
Steam-punk, and earlier cyber-punk, this certain Canon of Western fiction. In ...–punks tells about unorganized society, where there are different strata, there is intense competition between people. And it is from this increase the conflict in a literary work. Such fantastic realism.

In Solaris and other conflicts, philosophical:
1) What is man? Why does he live?
2) What is humanity? What is his purpose?

These are perennial philosophical questions. LEM and Tarkovsky answered these questions opposite.

Continue about serious cinema.

"Stalker" is a Soviet science fiction film-parable directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, filmed at the Studio "Mosfilm" in 1979 based on the novel "Roadside Picnic" by the Strugatsky brothers.

The film, as usual with Andrei Tarkovsky, almost nothing in common with the book Strugatsky.

Only the total overall idea of the setting.

The film is set in a fictional time and space; the characters do not have names — only nicknames.

Approximately twenty years before the start of the film registered the meteorite. In the area began to occur abnormal phenomena, people began to disappear. The place is called "Zone", and rumors about some mysterious room where you can run desires: most cherished, the most sincere, the most heartfelt. The area was cordoned off by the military cordons and barbed wire.

The protagonist of the film — recently released from prison the man they call "Stalker". He lives in poverty with his wife and sick daughter. Stalker makes a living by organizing illegal expeditions into the Zone, despite the protests of his wife. He was hired by Explorer Professor and Writer.

The film begins in black and white with three characters, broke away from a military patrol, get into the Zone. Here the picture becomes colored. The objective of travelers is to find the very Room. It appears that the entrance is located a few hundred metres from the start. Stalker requires that the satellites implicitly obeyed his instructions, explaining that the straight path in the Zone of not the shortest. I agree Professor, and Writer who went to the Area in search of a way out of a creative crisis, refers to the threats and warnings of a Stalker of the danger Zone with skepticism. Trinity goes a long workaround.

Well what can I say, it's Tarkovsky.

Literally on the day, I heard that the U.S. plans to make a TV series based on the book "Roadside Picnic".

I found it really hard to understand the Russian sung with a hispanic accent.

But the Barry Sisters' songs are great. I especially liked those sung in Yiddish. I realise now that I've heard them singing "Bei mir bist du scheyn" for decades without knowing anything about them or the rest of their songs. A quick trip to Wikiland made three hours pass in moments.

Thank you for your kind words.

But a little be a wimp. There is no hispanic accent. I can't hear him. And the song was recorded in just 20 minutes. The singer hardly managed to put a hispanic accent.

But there is a special intonation. They should give songs of vulgarity and depravity. After all, the song symbolizes the cruel, cold world where everything is for sale. That's why I called it capitalist ;)

In the film, during the song, the singer dropped some items of clothing. But it felt disgusting and out. And the song was a verse shorter.

When I first started writing in this thread, I knew I was bound to be this movie. And today it showed once on TV.

And so - The prisoner of If castle.

"The prisoner of If castle" is a Soviet adventure film directed by Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich, released in 1988 at the Odessa film Studio. The film is based on the novel by Alexander Dumas "the Count of Monte Cristo" and consists of three parts: "Abbe Faria", "the Count of Monte Cristo" and "I will repay".

I can't say that the film is perfect, in places it seems unfinished. But it is bright, dynamic and catchy.

It assembled a team of great Soviet actors.

But of course the main one, Victor Avilov, who plays the count of Monte Cristo. And Eugene Dvorzhetsky, Amont Dantes and albert de Morcerf, son of Mercedes and Fernand .

And songs performed by Alexander Gradsky.

"There once was a dog" — drawing the Soviet animated film directed by Eduard Nazarov. Original title — "Dog's life". Created based on the Ukrainian folk tale "Sirko".

Great cartoon, funny and kind. Is the cult. And not only here.

The bronze monument Wolf weighing about 200 kg was built in Tomsk in 2005. The authors — caster Maxim Petrov and consultant artist Leonty Usov. The wolf can speak eight phrases ("right Now I sing!", "God help you!", "Well, you come in, if that!" etc.).

Steel sculpture of a Wolf weighing two tons by the sketch artist Michael Ivashko established in Angarsk, Irkutsk region in 2007. When stroking the belly of the Wolf "right Now sing!". Wolf "knows" and other signature phrase.

In 2013 in the center of Kiev installed a wooden sculptural composition, sitting under the table the Wolf and the Dog. Author Vinnytsia sculptor Vladimir Zayats.

In the fall of 2013 in the village Svyatopetrovsk Kievo-Svyatoshinsky district has established a sculptural composition consisting of sitting on the pedestal of a Wolf and standing next to the Dog. The composition is complemented with a stylized wicker fence.

December 19, 2014 the Kazakhstan mint has released into circulation the circulation coins of the series "tales of the People of Kazakhstan" — Sirko. Yes, Strugatsky brothers, the great Soviet science fiction. They, and Yefremov, Kir Bulychev, are the face of Soviet fiction.

Strugatsky quite a lot filmed. But here's the really good adaptations that would have been the spirit of the book, as it is not very much. In my opinion.

Russian trash-film - Ятинсотэстс. The name doesn't make sense, anyway I don't know him. A set of letters, sounds something like - Yatinsotests. The film is senseless and crazy.

Wedding Buryat shepherd Batyr ended in a major setback – the bride was beheaded, the groom was arrested by the rural police Zaddik.

In prison, Batyr became acquainted with Swedish porn king Sven, who had served time for indecent assault during the Olympic games in Moscow. The Swede opened Batyr terrible secret of the alien robots.

The years have passed. After serving a sentence, the warrior had become a ruthless thug, and then went to work in militia. But the memories of the dead bride did not give him sleep. What can you do? The warrior decided to find those responsible and kill them without mercy.

It was at this dramatic moment the aliens struck a treacherous blow in the form of a terminator, programmed to kill people. But that could mean a terminator for the a Warrior, trained in the school of Buryat life in prison!

According to the custom of the ancestors before the decisive battle, the warrior came to the ritual stone, to ask for blessings from the deceased patriarchs farm. And got it in full!

With the battle breaking into the lair of the aliens from outer space, the hero in mortal combat wounded Queen alien. For many years she was hiding under the guise of a rural paramedic Sulmaniya Tugelbaeva, but now her head would decorate a hunting Lodge Batyr. And with good reason!

And that's just the Batyr received in that battle terrible injury. But the world not without kind people. In a fit of philanthropy rural policeman Zaddik helped the Warrior to die with the rest of the villagers.

Upon completion of all the above events successful Buryat village was like a parched desert. There was the beginning of a new life – the life of extraterrestrial intelligence.

"The space voyage" is a Soviet science fiction film about space exploration created a film Studio "Mosfilm" in 1935. The premiere took place on 21 January 1936. The screenplay was written with the participation and scientific advice of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

The film is dumb.

Thanks to the participation of K. Tsiolkovsky, the scientific side of the film was nearly flawless. In addition to obsolete parts (start from the ramp, antigravity bath), everything else is impressive even today.

For shooting scenes in zero gravity were first used special technical devices developed by cinematographer Alexander Halperin, together with the future of the largest aircraft engine designer Alexander Mikulin. In the scenery of the spacecraft cabin was built a special camera crane. Area of the crane, which was able to move freely in the horizontal and vertical directions, placed the actor and filming device with the cameraman. Due to the freedom of movement and tilt of the platform was able to shoot medium and close-UPS of actors on a moving background.

For shooting simulate zero gravity with the rotation of the character was built another installation in which the mobile background rotated relative to suspended actor synchronously with the camera, also mounted on the turntable Cable with rubber shock absorber used for suspension of the actors, was painted in the background color for masking. The frames were so accurate that after a few decades, these spacemen were delighted with the image of weightlessness.

The summer of 1946. At the Moscow Institute of interplanetary communications are conducted the first experiments on the preparation of the flight to the moon. The first experiments do not succeed. Launched into space rabbit dies in flight. A second rocket with a cat on Board disappears. "Formula of love" — the Soviet art film by Mark Zakharov based on a script by Grigoriy Gorin, released in 1984 by the Creative Association of television films. Free adaptation of the novel of Alexey Tolstoy "Count Cagliostro" (1921).

A wonderful and funny movie. With excellent dialogues and jokes.

Many phrases from it have gone to the people:

— Why do people live on earth? Tell me.
— How is it immediately? And then where he lives? If we, in Smolensk province — is one thing, if in the Tambov province is another.

If the doctor is full, so the patient is easier.

Alain Noby, Nostra Alice! Which means — if one man built, another zavsegda can disassemble.

In our County clerk was. Year of birth pasporte one number was recording ink, the scoundrel, saved. Then proyavilos case — in jail. And pasporta it not to change — document still.

Stay in Russia demoralizing acts on immature minds.

Зачем нам кузнец, нам кузнец не нужен

What's the movie about

In 1780, after a brief fraudulent tour in St. Petersburg, the famous adventurer, "the magician" and "master of arcane power," count Cagliostro forced to hide from his pursuers, sent by Prince Potemkin. At this time Cagliostro tries to find the "formula" the only feelings that he still is not able to cause in human hearts, is love.

Cagliostro arrives on the way to the house of one of its clients — the patient of a Russian landowner. He promises to heal the sick, if he would agree to send him with his daughter, Mary, through which, according to Cagliostro, will be supported "astral communication" with the patient. Actually, he wants to call it love.

At the same time in the Russian province of Smolensk lives a young landowner Alexey Fedosev. Living in his estate with elderly unmarried aunt, Petashev can't find a girlfriend and secretly dreams of unattainable "disembodied" ideal. Alesha is in love with a statue standing in the Park, and wants to revive her — "as once the Greek gods breathed life into a stone Galatea". Alyosha finds the count in the hotel where he lived for several days, trying to awaken Mache tender feelings. Cagliostro Vedysheva first refuses, but, at the request of Masha who has stood up for lover boy, moved to the estate of Alex accompanied by his retinue.

The count and his companions lives on the estate Vedysheva, while continuing attempts to win the love of Masha. Alex meanwhile is preparing to "materialize" the diligent reading Petrarch. Aunt advises him, instead of ruining the youth in fruitless dreams, "recapture" Mashenka from the count.
