Quote from: von Corax on December 01, 2023, 09:53:39 PMMy really amazing $38/hr Software Engineer job offer revealed itself to be a scam. There were a number of red flags which I noticed prior to yesterday's M$ Teams chat, such as the rather perfunctory nature of the telephone interview, the bugs in a web site developer's web site, the lack of a phone number on the site, and the fact that dig revealed that the domain name of a company in business since 2019 was only registered in October.

The kicker came when they texted me a photograph of a cheque and asked me to use my Mobile Banking app to deposit it so I could purchase my computer equipment from their preferred vendor. When I insisted on an e-transfer instead, they vanished and I have not heard from them since.

For the record, the company is Echo Perficient Solutions of Toronto ON.

Fortunately, my current employer were more than willing to allow me to withdraw my resignation.

The old adage comes to mind, if it looks too good to be true, it is.

And yeah, that deal with the resignation might come back to bite you in the butt...

But I wish you all the best!

#2101
it's raining, and when it rains I get an ear ache and can't clear my throat.

a friend I would call one of my emotional support extroverts is leaving the state due to financial pressures. It's the end of an era.

a member of a foodie group recently just had a heart attack and died young, a year older than I am.

edit- mum put a family dog down

one of my other emotional support people is ghosting my contacts for the last 5 months.

the nanowrimo forum where I've connected with people for over 15 years closed down and left us no ability to stay in contact with others.

the season tis seasoning.

Bah. More grousing about the internet. I've finally fallen foul of YT going "You're using an adblocker! You shouldn't use an adblocker!". I might have considered it once, if the ads they serve weren't almost entirely intrusive in nature, excessive in number, and often for scams and other borderline content.

I get so tired of life being just inundated with bloody advertising.
In all fairness, some of those who wander are definitely lost.

The Bullet

Stupid people....again!

Daughter had a doctors appoitment.
Phoned last week and got the confirmation that it is on December 12th.
Drove there (more than 1 hour) and was told "We do not have her on the list".
WTF?
But you confirmed the appointment last week on the phone.
"Maybe."
WTF??
Looked into her files and...."yes, your appointment ist December 14th"
ARGL!!!
If brute force does not work....you´re not using enough of it.

"Those stains on the ceiling are just from some ice dams we had one winter 10 years ago."

"storms have air pressure that can cause earaches"

"there's a cold going around right now, you probably caught that."

"You had covid a few years ago, that can leave people with lasting issues."

"What are you eating, maybe you have food reactions."

"My friend says her allergies are rough right now, maybe you've got seasonal allergies."

"It was humid, and warm all summer, everybodies bread didn't last."

"It's probably your anxiety causing symptoms."

"It's probably psycho-somatic or whatever."

people convinced me that it's probably me, for years. then they rip open ceiling to run wiring in november, I get an ear infection and the ceiling remains open without any work getting done for months. I popped up through one of the holes in the next bedroom over from mine and took pictures of the roof above our bedrooms.

2023 ended terribly, my uncle passed away in October, I've been sick since mid-November (with no access to doctors because they're striking), and this last Saturday, my aunt also passed away. And I've had two epi seizures in the two weeks that we've been in 2024.

Sorry to hear about all that Luke. I hope that in 2024 you will have many happy memories of your past, present and future.

That is very rough. My condolences regarding your loss. I'm hoping that the healthcare woes resolve soon, so at least you can find some respite.

This is a critism of the UK AA ( vehicle breakdown service)

They have recently changed cover rules.

I have previosly had cover for my little van, which included any vehicle..... thier tag line you are the member not the vehicle.

On renewing my cover I have found out it has all changed, I now need commercial cover for that one vehicle {because I sometimes carry tools and materials} and if I should want cover for my motorbikes a seperate personal policy now has to be added.

So it's going to cost twice as much a year with less protection from breakdown. I have been a member since the early 80's (anyone remeber AA Rider Club)

Disgusted and not too happy about the whole situation.........Fopping rip off.Could be time to check out alternatives.

If a member of the AA in the UK I would seriosly check ypur T+C's under the new changes you could be paying for no cover at all.

Just a word of warning.

The apartment I just moved out of had bedbugs and cockroaches. I've just learned that they followed me to the new place and I must get the entire house treated. Bleh! On the other hand, the rep said it would make treatment easier if I start unpacking my stuff now.

Sorry to hear that.  Cockroaches you can manage, but bedbugs are a plague of biblical proportions to deal with.  I've fought and won a war with bedbugs, but it took me 3 months,$300 worth of chemicals and performing a study to determine what would kill the adult bugs so they'd stop laying new eggs.  At the end, anything plastic or rubber would stick or downright melt into my carpet for about a year (the active ingredient was DEET, which is a plasticizer).

PS. The only other alternative is to stay away from the house for a few months, assuming they don't adopt another host nearby. If you lived in warmer (hot) weather, leaving the house with no artificial climate would kill them, as they're sensitive to heat.

My mother is in the hospital since late last night (I still don't know what's going on), and today I showed up for work on my day off, not realizing it was Thursday, not Friday.

Thank you guys, and salutations from "Camp Randall" (this is what I'm now calling this place where I live in. It feels more like camp than a permanent residence).

My mother has been through a rollercoaster for more than a week. 10 daysago she was interned into a hospital with an extreme case of lethargy. She was not eating or drinking and was barely conscious, but was communicating. A urinary infection took over her entire body, and her kidneys stopped, and her condition worsened and lost consciousness within 24 hours, and all her major organs began to shut down.

They gave her antibiotics and forced fluids into her body. On the 3rd day, doctors were asking whether I would want to resuscitate her in case of major organ failure. To which I responded they could stop only if death was imminent, to save her from the pain; however, I told them to find the root of the problem and work harder to find the root cause,MRI and all that jazz.

They suspected brain damage, but could find none other than scars from previous strokes from the last time she was at hospital, and only had evidence of the infection and toxins coming from the organs. So I instructed them to continue antibiotics and be as aggressive as they could.  I authorized a spinal tap to find if the infection had gone to her brain. They should have done the procedure during this weekend.

On the 4th day they asked if it'd be appropriate to send her to hospice, given her anti-western medicine beliefs. I asked how long she would live without treatment, and they told me a week. I told them to try harder, that it was premature. I needed answers, not guesses.

On the fifth day she showed signs of improvement. On the sixth the kidneys were almost back to normal. The heart is still weak, pumping 1/3 of the normal flow. She's making vocalizations and will respond to questions, but I can't understand what she's saying. Obviously there will be brain damage. I'm hoping for the best, but planning to make a short trip - all I can afford, to see her one last time.

I don't know when I'll be able to go. I only get 3 days off ("bereavement days") from my work. Plus I can't afford a long trip anyway. So I'm waiting for news (painfully slow), and trying to go on with my life.

My heart, thoughts and prayers with you JW.
I spent 2 weeks last year watching my mum slowly slip away on a daily basis.
A horrible experience, the not knowing, the ups and downs, the hopeful peaks and the final chat with the consultant in a quiet room, which confirms your worst fears.
Possibly the worst 2 weeks of my life so far.
Fingers crossed for your mum mate.

A small gahhhh, from running errands today; notable only because it happened twice in a short trip.

Dear pedestrians: if it is within your capabilities, put some hustle on when crossing the road, instead of wimbling along staring down at your phone, please.
In all fairness, some of those who wander are definitely lost.
