Just brainstorming... (Halloween's coming after all...)

The experimental weapon known as the O'Halloran Patent Electric Brown Bess was nicknamed the "Frankenstein Gun" because it's replaceable power cells are recharged by collecting the "vital aether" that is released by recently deceased animal matter.  It's inventor was excommunicated by the Catholic Church for suggesting that the mutilation of bodies on the battlefield could provide an inexhaustible supply of ammunition. It fires a lethal bolt of energy that O'Halloran compared to a "concentrated ball of St. Elmo's Fire"

I'm envisioning a musket stock with removable power pack(s) in the stock with switches, lights and vacuum tubes, or a mini "plasma ball" protected by a brass cage. The barrel made from a frosted acrylic tube with lights inside in some fashion, perhaps with some wire windings at intervals down the barrel. The recharging unit is a box with removable backpack straps. Behind doors inside the recharging unit is a disembodied corpse hand (Halloween prop) with wires and electronics running from it to the power pack(s) being recharged. If the hand can be animated to move, a "Galvanic Response Test" button could be included. When the button is pressed a green light glows inside the hand and it moves. If it fails to move, it is an indication that the last of the vital aether has been drained from the "animal matter" and it needs to be replaced.

When the weapon is in storage, the deceased matter is removed, and a small antenna array can be used to as a slow trickle-charge to maintain the power cells by collecting ambient background aether from the environment.
