What do we do if Proteus does not make contact?

Simple question really. Given Proteus seems to be the key to things.... what do we do if they just... can't be reached? I'd hate the idea of abandoning this place after about fifteen years, but if there is none in the engine room keeping things from sinking?

Maybe forming a migration stratagy would be in order alongside finding a destination for said migration.

Seconding this. It was the talk of the town over on Sparegoggles during the outage.

Even if we never need to use it, we need a plan B if we can't get a new admin in place. This thread was where most of said discussion happens, for those wanting to gauge the general sentiment among us so far.

The cliffnotes are that we may just need to bite the bullet and rebuild a new server. Recruitment is the biggest task once the nuts and bolts are sorted, as we need a sizeable enough userbase to make it worthwhile. We discussed strategies for how to make Brass Goggles (or whatever the replacement forum would be) the 'locus' of Steampunk on the internet. My pitch was when discussing steampunk elsewhere we steer things toward this forum and use the hashtag #Brassgoggles for our media posts on other sites.
Still here, just quieter

You might have to explain how we tag Brassgoggles, as some of us (points to self) might not know how.

It's quite straightforward. If you were to, say, post an image on instagram of a steampunk-related piece of jewellery you made then in the text section you just type "#steampunk #brassgoggles".

It's more applicable to the makers among us when they share their creations across the internet.

duplicate from the other thread....

Ooooohhhh Kaaaaayyyy

I have a bunch of old machines lying around.
and storage is now really really cheap.
like 5TB for a hundred bucks.
I have a couple terrabyets lying around somewhere in this mess .
and I need more disk anyway.

Soooo .

I am running wget as we speak, on this crippled littel Win7 box with 100G free:

wget --mirror --page-requisites --convert-links --adjust-extension --compression=auto --reject-regex "/search|/rss" --no-if-modified-since --no-check-certificate http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/

it really is getting everyhting.
supposedly it will create the links from the forum index to the offline web pages. We will see.

I will let this run overnight and see what happens.

If it looks like it is working, I will hook up one of the terrabyte drives ( we like anime, what can i say .... especially stuff like Inuyasha, Natsume Youjinsho, Ghost in the Shell, Cowbiy Bebop... Oh and NHK Japan public TV! lots of great shosws about japan in english that they let you
download ! ) to one of the more modern latops and let her rip...

Once i have the whole forum, i will then use the wayback machine tools to UPLOAD the entire forum to archive.org
then at least we can use sparegoggles to link to the wayback.

its not a solution
but its a viable workaround that doesnt take much human labor.

hope this helps

Current status -It is downloading the whole forum .
slowly, but thats ok

Just a suggestion.

It occurs to me that lots of/some people probably know a little something about Proteus. Little snippets gained or stumbled over in the course of time here on BG. Things he/she let slip when being conversational in the process of rectifying a problem (like a password or something), or let slip in an admin/mod meeting or whatever it's called.

Thus, it might be useful to pool such knkowledge so that we might figure our what we need to know right at this moment.

Or, maybe I'm just being irritating again. *shrug*
