On May 24, 1881, the sternwheel passenger steamboat SS Victoria capsized and sank in the Thames River in London ON. With an estimated death toll of between 182 and 198, this was at the time one of the worst maritime disasters in Canadian history.

Capsized? How does a steamer capsize? Did everyone rush over to the same side of the boat?
Looks at Wikipedia article - it does indeed seem they did!
