I see SMF 2.0 is in the 3rd release candidate. Not sure how their dev cycle goes but I hope they get it done soon, things sound hopeful. Of course waiting till the actual release has been out a bit to iron out final bugs would be advisable on a forum this busy.

The lags seem to come and go at weird intervals though - oddly enough over here at least, they seem most prevalent when the forum isn't all that busy at all..  I had some major lag issues about an hour ago, solved by revisiting the thread in question a few minutes late.. odd, that.

I've been testing RC3, and it seems really solid. I'm hoping the SMF folks can release soon!

Most of the lag here is caused by various spiders indexing us for search engines; some is caused by sites on the same hardware being busy. This is why lag seems to crop up at the oddest times. Also, some of the maintenace scripts are set to run when not many users are on (else they'd make the site totally unusable).

I love the new look!  It is very clean and visually easy on the eyes.  Well done!

It seems like people either love it or hate it... :D

It's worth mentioning that if you want the old look back -- because it's easier on your eyes, or because you hate the new theme, or because of plain old nostalgia -- you can enter your Profile, click on the "look and layout preferences" link, and select the "Vintage-BG" theme.

Many, many thanks. I'd never thought to check if this were possible. I've actually switched to a neutral look, because I didn't love the old design either. The only thing that could be better is if I could create my own little design.  ;)

I'm not sure if feedback is wanted, but in case it is - has a less colorful style been considered or proposed? With the new look, reading white text on colors that are leaping dramatically from one shade to the other was straining my eyes. With the old, I just felt the whole "covered in brown" look was a bit too much. More neutral, reader friendly colors can be worked in without losing the antique look. For example, the borders and headings can be done in browns and deep reds, while the boxes around individual posts can be done in a much more neutral, easier to read parchment color. With a deep brown default text, this would definitely maintain a steampunk look, but also a clean and readable look.

Just a suggestion. If you like, I'll gladly put together a few examples of what I mean and present them to the appropriate persons. If suggestions are not wanted, I'll leave it alone.  :)
Oh, you are beautiful! No really, you are, you're gorgeous! Space-age clockwork, I love it, I've got chills! Listen, I mean this from the heart - and by the way, count those - it would be a crime, it would be an act of vandalism to disassemble you.

But that won't stop me.

I'm not a designer, so I'm thrilled to have someone create their own styles and share them.

The main thing is that the blog and forum must have a consistent look -- at least enough that it's clear they're the same site.

Does this mean that you'd like me to suggest design changes for both?
Or that you'd be most interested in design changes that reflect the current look of the blog?

I'd be pleased with either.  Blog is Wordpress, Forum is SMF -- if you can make changes that are CSS-only, that's preferred; otherwise, I'm open to complete themes as well.

I'm a design-only type - I really don't know anything about CSS. I can give you hexadecimal color values for any design mockup I put together, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

The new look is kinda cool--but where are our flags? :'( I loved glancing at the left bar to see where everyone was from. (Or pretending to be from, but whatever.  :D) Can we please have those back?

I've mentioned this a few times; hopefully the word will spread: the lack of country flags is not an intentional decision. After upgrading the forum software, the country flags mod behaved badly (didn't work *and* caused forum issues). I have filed a bug with its author; if the bug is fixed, I'm happy to install the mod again.

If someone wants to make their own country mod and/or fix the existing one, that would work as well. :)
