I'm trying to think of a name for a space shippy/ future computery contraption discovered on earth and has been running for Centuries silently gathering information......long story short...... Voyager in Star Trek in my living room, a future project.

I've come up with HAL/Scion

The reasoning...... (bits grabbed from a search)

HAL....  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_9000

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL/S

Scion.....

1. a young shoot or twig of a plant, especially one cut for grafting or rooting.
2. a descendant of a notable family.

I'm going to skip over the plant answer because that's basically just Groot.

A scion is a term for a descendant of a notable family, and most fantasy or sifi have an "old race" responsible for technology that far eclipses what is possible in the current era. Usually these races have died off or left the known universe for an unexplained reason, leaving behind powerful artifacts that the current generations can only guess at how to use.

A scion to me would be the descendants of those old ones, think Disney's Atlantis. They are the genetic descendants of the powerful race but, due to declining power, breeding with 'lesser' races, shinking population, or their public education being cut; they are no longer the powerhouses they used to be.

I would assume a scion to be visually reminiscent of the old ones, able to use their technology to a degree, and probably be somewhat snobbish as the heirs to the greatest race.

Phonetically it sounds like halcyon.....

denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful.

¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬

Too tenuous, rubbish, obtuse or simply a no go?

Any input gladly received.

In Star Trek it was Veeger and of course there is Zardoz so I could go longer name some of which is blocked out by years of corrosion.

Hopefully something to get your brain juices flowing.

But in reality I suspect not.........??

For your possible consideration...

The Nous (usually translated as "Intellect", or "Intelligence" in this context, or sometimes "mind" or "reason") is described as God, or more precisely an image of God. It thinks its own contents, which are thoughts, equated to the Platonic ideas or forms (eide). The thinking of this Intellect is the highest activity of life. The actualization (energeia) of this thinking is the being of the forms. This Intellect is the first principle or foundation of existence. The One is prior to it, but not in the sense that a normal cause is prior to an effect, but instead Intellect is called an emanation of the One. The One is the possibility of this foundation of existence.

Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?

The problem with 'Nous' is that in the UK it is a fairly common word, pronounced like 'mouse' and its primary meaning is good judgement and general practicality. Maybe not a problem here, but best to be aware of.

I always thought that the 'nous' referred to here was 'noös' or 'gnoös' but neither seem to exist so at least I've learned something today.

As for suggestions for a name, whenever I'm asked, whether for a child's name, a pet's name or a pet name, my answer is always 'Fang'. It is equally suitable in all occasions.  ;)
I speak in syllabubbles. They rise to the surface by the force of levity and pop out of my mouth unneeded and unheeded.
Cry "Have at!" and let's lick the togs of Waugh!

I think we can safely assume "Fang" aint on the list.  ;D

It reminds me of and old dog I had years ago....... called Hound Dog.

I used to come in from work and shout out "where's my hound dog!!!"

He knew no different and his tail almost fell off with the amount of wagging when he saw me.

On that basis I could always go with 'Pooter

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

I am taking these in and thanks......... apeart from Fang  :D

If it's a completely alien device, it might not even have a name as we understand it. The people who find it might give it a name like "Harpur Hill Quarry Artifact" or "Abingdon-on-Thames Meteorite".

If brute force does not work....you´re not using enough of it.

Well, here's the problem with assigning names: it entirely depends on who discovers it last.  If the artifact in  question was known to say, the Egyptians, there might be an Egyptian name attached to it, but if it's not written down on the device, how would you know we what it was called?  So the last person to unearth It gets to assign a name to It.  Barring some reference to it written in the Necronomicon, or some other obscure book.
