Lucius Malfoy From Harry Potter? Eh? That's a little long-winded. Bloody daft name for a book series if you ask me.

Telescope Cane

A one legged tripod is called a monopod and is frequently used with cameras. It's nearly as good as a tripod with obviousl limitations and greater portability. So a standard 1/4" screw on the walking stick would do very nicely.

I am also greatly in favour of hollow sticks filled with strong drink.

Another very useful possibility is that the stick may have a telescoping characteristic, that it may be used to catch fishes when one runs out of food in some lonely place. An assortment of hooks, suckers, pokers and prodders to attach to the long end would also be very useful for retrieving things otherwise out of reach, and I feel that with the increasing adoption of high-tension electricity as a means of distributing power, an insulating section should be built into the stick to enable acts of sabotage against substations, generating-plants and switchgear.

Automatic rifles? bah. What we need is walking sticks.

Hm. with the discussion of telescopic canes thus far, I always thought of pocket sized sticks that would expand to a full-length walking stick.. now if one were to start with a proper length cane and made it telescopic.. hmm... instant spear, anyone?

Thug: Gimme your wallet, NOW!
You: Uhh, no. *presses hidden button* SCHWIIIIIIIIING! *cane extends to 9ft spear* This is SPARTA, bitch!

Well, at least it's funny in my mind.. :P

A nice idea, but it would probably be classed as a telescopic baton and thus illegal in many countries. Or at least not legal to carry in public.

akumabito

Of course, but the idea is still pretty damn cool.. :P

Just as a matter of interest does anyone know anywhere I could purchase some brass knuckles?

I remember reading this weird old book in the library of University College Dublin which was written before either the first or second war, it was curious because it didnt have any date to indicate when it was printed and it also didnt have an author it was instead entitled "A Few Proposals From a Gentleman With A Pair of Brass Knuckles", it was very anti-socialist but in much less of a political sense proper, it was kind of a "we will eat with ornate sets of ivory handled fish knives and no one will tell us different", it got five stars for unintentional humor anyway.

akumabito

brass knuckles, yeah, I can buy those on the market here. About 80 to 100 baht, if memory serves me correctly.. :D

I do not know where you are geographically located, but from time to time in the US they can be found in the guise of belt buckles that just happen to be solid, usable brass knuckles for about $10us each.

I have a feeling that they are illegal in the UK, although I'm not sure. I would expect to see people wearing them as an affectation were they legal and I've never seen a real set.

steampirate

how about a stick with a light on the end? that way when you are in a dark alley, you can shine the light so then you are a better shot with your built-in steam pistol. :)

Thailand, actually. There used to be a little Thai flag with my location right underneath my avatar, but both are MIA.. :(

Perhaps a walking stick with some flashing red lights across the top, which you can talk to and is called Kitt.

Knight Strider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a scientist... who does not exist.

In other news, this and the built-in-USB-memory idea both make me very happy. How awesome would it be to say "Oh, let me retrieve that data from my portable archive." and plug your CANE into the PC? Pretty darn awesome.

Which brings me to a more a practical idea- what about a cane with various... drawers? Compartments? In any case, whichever, I'd love to see a cane with a first aid kit in it- rather like that syringe cane someone posted an EBay link to, but more general. If I was a bit more of a carpenter, I'd try my hand myself, but neither my carpentry nor cabinetry is up to snuff.

Own personal preference: cane with a pogo-stick built in. Picture the following...
Mugger: "Gimme yer money, ya bahstad!"
Self: "I think not, ruffian!"
*Pushes button* SPPRRROOING!
Self: "Farewell, swine!"

So, John, when would you like me to make this pogo cane?

I would like to get started on it over the summer. I know where I can get a cane, I have some ideas, all I need is someone with decent woodworking abilities and a suitably lunatic disposition...which is where you come in.
