My votes are: Porco Rosso, and  Steamboy. and A Series Of Unfortunate Events - if only for Emily Browning... *day dreams*

I'm also partial to movies such as the Road to Perdition, Cindarella Man, Master and commander, and though it doesnt really fit steampunk, M. Night's The Village was a great movie to me too.

and plus one for The Illusionist!

Has anyone mentioned Metropolis yet? Perhaps more industrial/futuristic looking than Steampunky but I think there are elements within it.

I've seen plenty of the films mentioned,
but I can't seem to figure out what films inspire the
pirate like/gun wearing outfits,
can someone give me specific examples of what movies that look draws from?

Its a while since I've seen them so I can't remember how Steamy they are but:
Baron Munchausen
Yellowbeard
Time Bandits

Alternatively its cos dressing up like a pirate and going "yaaar" is a big bundle of fun and I'll take any opportunity I can :P

I finally got to see Metropolis last week.  I had decided there was absolutely nothing on satellite TV one night, when I noticed that a French language public TV channel was showing Metropolis.  So, I watched it -- with the original German intertitles, subtitled in French.  (My ability to read and translate both languages simultaneously was not quite up to the speed with which the titles disappeared, but I managed to get the gist of the story from the French anyway.)

I thought there were some really wonderful visual images, especially of "the machine" and the robot, although I had already seen most of these images in clips and stills.

The story was rather muddled, though, and there were some rather long, tedious scenes of the actors simply "emoting" in the stereotypical manner of silent films.

I was really taken with Rotwang, though.  He seems to have been the archetype of the Mad Scientist for so many later films.  [Indeed, I think John Lithgow's Dr. Lizardo/Lord Wharfin in Buckaroo Banzai was an homage to this archetype.]

Rotwang:

Lizardo/Wharfin:
"Ta, darling!  I'll bring it back when I'm finished with it!
(If I'm not too drunk to remember where I got it.)

In case anyone missed the news, an original theatrical release length print of Metropolis has been found and will be released at some point in 2009.

Also, by some strange coincidence I have a .divx file of Jasper Morello, not sure how I came by it. ;)

I'm sure if anyone wished to "dispose" of it for me an arrangement could be come to.

Dust Devil is awesome
and the five disc collectors edition released by Subversive ALSO includes the very strange documentary "The Secret Glory" about the genuine occult nazis who were looking for The Holy Grail amongst other things... some of their explorations to Greenland are still classified... makes a nice companion piece to the first Hellboy movie. ;)

Mrs. Sullivan

"The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao" may not be considered completely steampunk, but it is set in the early 20th century, and the story concerns a creepy carnival that comes to town (with strange creatures on exhibit, such as  "The Pan" and "The Abominable Snowman") and has "lessons" for those who view its exhibits.

Filmed in 1964, it stars Tony Randall and Barbara Eden, and blew me away as a kid (though the "special effects" will seem cheesy today).  I really thought those creatures were real! :)

I recommend this film for those who like fantasy.

i happen to like and enjoy watching LOEJ , mainly for Stewart Townsend and the lovely Mina..plus THAT car..oh got to sit in that you know!

i would say Shanghai Noon and Knights are vaguely steampunk

The recent Steve Coogan 'Around the world in 80 days' has elements

ABANDON HOPE, ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE!!!!!...... if you have already abandoned hope, please disregard this notice.

Ethnogear

So many good films, so little time.. Oh for a life a lesuire.

I would throw out there Nate and Hayes. perhaps a bit late in the genre, but the development of armoured steamship verses traditional pirate vessel..

Perhaps I'm blind .... but nobody talks about "TAXANDRIA", 1994 belgian film by animator Raoul Servais (with a big visual work from François Schuiten)

Perhaps isn't it steampunk enough ?

Well, it's a film I've never heard of, and it is exceedingly hard to find out about online, but I think it looks fantastic. Good call, I'd say; I'll be keeping an eye out for it.
