I think we need to set up a separate thread, but it is a good idea. Cockneys are born within the sound of Bow Bells, what is the equivalent for Cogney's?

A Cogney had therefore better set up a thread within this Board, I would suggest "Hello, We Are Cogneys" Now Show reference, and look towards electing a Coggely King and Queen and setting about recipes for jellied Air Kraken. I sadly am not a Cogney, unless of course you consider that as big ben is broadcast on radio and TV we are all Cogneys. Londoners at least should be eligible.

Maybe 'Gears'n'Junk' then? Making the contraction 'Gears' or 'Gear' which was used in the 1960's to refer to something excellent as in 'Fab Gear'.

One of my fave Walthamstow pubs is the King William IV - micro brewery combined with wood, copper and brass :)
The micro brewery does some nice brews, including a tasty light and refreshing Ginger Beer which happens to be about 5 % - SOOOOO nice in the spring

Im currently stuck up in Yorkshire on the borders of West and North yorks just outside Skipton. not much steamy happening up other than the two steam railways. Embsay to bolton abbey railway and the more famous Keighley and Worth Valley railway (home of the railway children film from the 70s) Whenever I get a chance I escape back to Nottingham for a pint in the Sal not exactly the most local local but and old fav!!! ;D
Northampton here, i know there are a few more Steampunks locally but the Cad's haven't signed up to the forum yet, despite my regular prodding.

This may be a rather silly question, or my inability to use the search engine, but is there a regular meeting of those who love all things steam in London? as I am now in a poisition where I could attend, mind you my attire would have to be a fine suit as the rest of my clothing is annoyingly uniform.
No regular meeting as such but there are often events. You have just missed the LSS but we are hoping to be able to hold another one towards the end of March.

I was hoping to rally a band of people together to ocassionally meet for social purposes...not necessarily being directly linked to steampunk but just an opportunity for like-minded people to hang out and make new friends etc.
I did set up a thread on this part of the board called The Guild of London Town but didn't get much of a response so I figured people weren't interested. If any of you ARE, however, how about you throw your ideas for meeting places at us and see if we can get a social together?! I wasn't thinking of anything 'official' as such. The VSS is a great band which set up proper steampunk gatherings, so you might wanna look them up- I was just thinking 'casual like'!! ;D
I suggested going to see a burlesque show sometime cause they're awesome and I enjoy them...but I may be the only one...*cough*! So any other suggestions are welcome! ;D

so sorry... I spent 18 years there before I made my way up to Lancashire. I would say 'the better part of', but I was packed off to school at 11, and so nine months out of twelve found me in Rickmansworth. (Now I wait and see if any fellows come out of the woodwork. Hmm).

i would love to meet up as I'm pretty new to the steam punk scene. I study in Cambridge but, visit North London weekly to see the 'rents n for work. Could you point in the direction of any authentic looking costume shops? I'm an absolute newbe but, im very keen to explore the sp world n meet like minded people. P.s. I like burlesque too. We don't tend to organise as groups I'm afraid but there are a number of us in Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Chesterfield, Rotherham and Sheffield and get together fairly regularly. Keep an eye here on geographical. There is talk of a get together over easter at Papplewick Pumping Station. (Just north of Nottingham).

I have to apologise as I seem to have completely missed this post. Living at the end of the Victoria Line I would like to be involved or possible asked to be involved in future events. I have to state I don't think I would be a "regular" as I do have other pulls on my time, but I would LOVE to meet up with others who feel that wearing a top hat and tail coat isn't a reason to shun me (although it does tend to get me seats on the tube - notice plural, sometimes almost a whole carriage)
As for burlesque, well out of decency I may have to carry two spare top hats - any indication of the hat size ::)

Nothing wrong with Guisborough :) Although the town centre could do with some tender loving care. Its good for walks and close to Whitby, Saltburn etc.

but today being bank holiday monday im day tripping on the worth valley railway as its the railway children weekend there I went down yesterday but it took ages to get to oakworth.... Some girls were standing on the line waving red petticoats!!! lol
You quite often find a few steampunks @ the wendyhouse in Leeds....myself included. 3rd sat of the month. they even had a steamy theme a few months back ;D
Good morning, my dear fellows. Derbyshire gentleman here, though more man than genteel I must confess.
I noticed the good Tinker mention that there are a number of steamers in the Derbyshire/Nottingham area (I specifically noticed him mention Chesterfield, hint hint) and was wondering if anyone in the area had a notion for a social get-together. Nothing major required, simply like mindeds getting together for drinks and fun for a few hours.

For those in the Nottingham area may I recommend the monthly Steaming Sundays at the Industrial Museum at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham. It is a most interesting venue with many fine steam powered machines and located in the fine grounds of Wollaton Hall. http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2562 (http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2562) I must admit I did rather promise to promote their museum which is in danger of further council cuts closing it entirely.
I reside in Cambridgeshire myself but I do enjoy the odd weekend in Nottingham and would love to re-visit that museum in the company of fellow steamy enthusiasts.

I was in Colchester at the weekend, my Dad's side of the family come from there. It's a lovely old town, and near the sea (in land locked Derbyshire, I don't get to see it as often as i like...)

We definatly should!! There are some really nice pubs in colchester (free of the "usual" sort...) and some really nice places as well... But if you were to go the pub route I would be unable to attend until september (Still 17 blast it...) but it sounds like a briliant idea! I can imagine Steampunkers arrive en masse to the castle for a day and worrying everybody!

There are a handful in the Leicester area. There is quite an active bunch of us in the wider (what might be termed the old coalfields) area. Most of us travel a little way to get togethers and Nottingham has been a focus since it is central. Papplewick Pumping Station welcomes us regularly.
May I suggest you start a thread for planning a get together. People will join in.

Another lurker here, I'm Ian from the depths of Yorkshire (wakefield/pontefract way), been interested in Steampunk for around the last year but as always I've had too much on to really get into it. Finally have a little time in hobby schedules and interested in learning some leather and metal working (something I've wanted to do for about the last 10 years). Happy to learn new crafts and meet people.
My Wife and I are taking our first steps into the scene and have already booked tickets to The Asylum in Lincoln next month.
Just gotta figure out how to make 2 costumes on a budget within a month...

Thank you. I would have liked to have gone to the Asylum last year but something got in the way (or probably monies were tight). Unfortunately the Asylum date this year now clashes with a wedding. So it looks like I'm going to have plenty of time to get ready for next years instead.

Hello everyone, I've been residing in Rutland for the past 24 years - and I doubt there are any other steampunkers in this little county! We're between Leicester Stamford and Peterborough those of you who don't know where Rutland is .... and I'm fairly new to the whole thing too; it was good to discover that the things I was making had a home in Steampunk.

I know Devizes quite well I spent a lot of my younger years walking the Kennet and Avon canal.... Ok I haven't been there in years as im now living in Yorkshire but I know Wiltshire, Dorset, and my home county of Hampshire very well. Thinking on it a Steampunk Canal boat could be good fun hmmm.....

I'm not Lincolnian by birth, more by an accident of employment and geography but it's very nice to be here all the same! Also, I agree that maybe meeting up somewhere sounds like a sterling idea, I have met precious few likeminded folk since I moved to Lincoln and now I find you all hiding in here!
If you're in London..you might be interested in a little place we came across yesterday. Just a short walk down Kingsland High Road in east London..no. 5 to be exact.. is an amazing coffee house cum bar called The Bridge. Small, brass festooned bar downstairs and a 50 foot long 'lounge' up stairs full of fancy chairs and sofas..it's amazing. Lovely coffee..a few imported bottled lagers and a full spirits selection..scrummy pastries. Here's a few pics we took. The owner and staff were really nice..they asked if Rob and I were 'rock stars'.. ;D

I have to agree with you, Scrubby, and you Major Q, there are an exceedingly greater number of us than might have been thought to be here, indeed a number of times I met people I knew at The Asylum to which we would looked amazed and say something along the lines of ... ' I didn't know you were a steampunk!'.
It would appear that it is a hidden trait for many of us in our daily lives, perhaps that lincoln imp pin with goggles is a much needed emblem to denote one is a member of the Lincoln Secret Society of Steampunks - or better yet the 'Lincoln we will not be secret, society of steampunks!

Until then though the local forum to which the Major has mentioned is a wonderful place to catch up with others locally, as well as on here :)

I know that town very well i was born there!!! lol don't live anywhere near there now but i do occasionally pop down to see friends who live just outside fawley, there just about close enough that there would be no 2 min warning if that place ever went up lol

Canterbury seems quite nice so far, but sadly I haven't seen much beyond the bus and train station. I've been confined to Kent uni campus due to induction talks / lack of knowledge or friends. I shall be taking a walk down tomorrow to explore though, I believe
I studied Psychology at UKC and was in Eliot. Of course the Uni was much smaller back in my day... (descends into bluff old codger type reminiscing).

Not entirely sure where to post, but here seemed a good place to start. I got into Steampunk at the event at April's Whitby. Then went to Asylum and had an absolute blast. Someone pointed me at a Steampunk talk in Sheffield so me and a friend went as we're wanting to go to more events. The fellow who did the talk directed me here as a good place to find out about events and meet-ups, so here I am :)
I live in Sheffield and if any other Sheffield-folk fancy meeting up and making things then let me know - I'd love to meet people who encourage each other to create :)

Hello to all you three I just thought I would say that you are very well placed as there are quite a few events in the Yorkshire- North Midlands area. There is Quite a lot of events around nottingham which will be fairly easy to get to plus there has been a few up in Yorkshire, best to keep an eye on the geographical posts boards as they mainly get posted up there. we just had a fantastic meet up on the embsay to bolton abbey railway [just outside skipton] which will be repeated next year and you will be more than welcome.

Often helping to supply West Yorkshire with Steampunk accessories in areas such as Howarth, Ilkley, Leeds, Horsforth etc.

sorry we didn't see you at embsay but if you fancy a pint come and join me at the beer festival next sunday at oxenhope, its easy by train to keighley, then travel on the steam railway. good tip though for the KWVR is as your fairly local take along a passport photo or metro card and a couple of proofs of address because i think you would be able to get a local residents card it makes a day rover £9 for that day and £7 for the next 2 years which is much cheaper than the usual £14 it costs! we shall also be wondering up in to Haworth for lunch time and to look in to the vintage shops for describable items to add to the ever growing collection of steampunk kit!

I have never been and they have quite a few things i wouldn't mind seeing. there is probably quite a few of us up in the north that would be interested in a trip next year.
mind you at this rate ill be spending all my free time next year on steam railways. because so far there will be the Embsay to Bolton abbey trip, and one on the Worth Valley a few of us keep talking about going on the North York moors and the Wensleydale line plus there will more than likely be a trip to the railway museum in York at some point! lol

Yes indeed, although whether we make it to the Entertainment on the Friday night depends on what time we're likely to arrive, as we're having to stay in Scarborough. It may be necessary to head straight there & retire early, ready for an early start on Saturday. (I hope not, Friday night's "do" at the Rifle Club sounds fabulous!)

I must say a trip to Ribble Steam Railway would be most welcome and in fact to all of the places mentioned. We are somewhat obsessed with all things steam and have the excellent luck to have a 1912 Aveling & Porter steamroller just next door (in the event where a not so quick departure is required) :o

Well I have been saying that we should All Meet up in Harrogate sometime soon to take the waters, There is our planed excursion up to Beamish 5th Dec for Ice skating (I know not Yorkshire but not exactly far away either) There will be another trip next summer to Embsay ( on the vintage rolling stock might i add!)
And there will some things going on on the KVWR (I have already said that I want to book out the L&Y club car if it goes back in to service next year, which it should as the restoration work is almost done)
also If any body is interested there is a vintage fair in Haworth this sunday (no actual meet is planned but ill be about shopping for a new outfit and trying to sell things ;D)

I go between my home town of Northampton and here in Aberystwyth quite often so it would be nice to meet other people sometime when I do go back, usually it is once a month or at worst three months and if there isn't one already I was thinking of organising a get together in Aberystwyth in the new year if anyone is interested?

This is a great site, I am amazed at how many UK and London based Steam Punk enthusiasts there are out there. As this is a forum letting people know what is happening around the UK for aficionados like yourselves, I am coordinating an event in London next week, a tasting festival in Moorgate, where we are having a Steam Punk Brunch headlining the Sunday 5th December, the final day of the tasting fest. We have an amazing contraption that is going to be pumping out Bloody Marys, and I want the atmosphere in the Steam Punk area to be as good as it can be. say little), recovery business a few miles down the road from you? They have several steam engines knocking around; a lovely Burrell engine, called 'Little Dorothy' and a MacLaren that is unfortunately in a very dilpadated state (ie, it is simply a boiler tube, and half a footplate :( ) There's a steam rally on April, middle of April if you're interested. Or, if indeed you attended last year's Riverside Rally...? :)

Good Evening all I have only just noticed we had our own special forum. My name is Tom and I am 24 years of age. I reside in Loughborough, south of the City of Nottingham.
I love the ideals of the victorian age when gentlemen were indeed such things. While I do like the fashion I fear I do not have the self confidence to wear such garb out and about.
I also make things (mostly computers) and Hope to build a cnc milling machine in the near future... though financial constraints burden me currently.
Lots of us in the midlands, Xye. there are a few meets happening in Nottingham in the new year, take a gander at the geographical part of the forum. One at Papplewick pumping station... I think it's the 2nd of Jan? And one at Jamcafe in Hockley at the end of January. Once you see a few folks out and about in steamy attire, you get over the shyness.
I'm in the vicinity of Leicester myself. Hope to get out and about to some of the meet ups in the midlands this coming year, meet some new people :)

Ahhh the Barge! wonderful place, I had feared for a while after the smoking ban that it had lost its charm... Descending the stairs into a rippling sea of smoke... But it still draws me in, one of the few places I can drink and not have to worry about any bad music coming on (Occasional slips of Nickelback do occur)

New boy Hollis Wood (actually my name is Colin Wright but many know me as Hollis in the reenactment community) checking in. Based in FELTHAM, west London in ear shot of Heathrow.
I've been into reenactment (America Civil War, American West, WW1 and WW2) for 20 odd years and recently moved into Star Wars costuming with the 501st Legion (Stormtrooper, Biker Scout, Darth vader).
Breaking into Steampunk as I am aslo into Victoriana and I am working on steamy Biggleworth aviator typer costume.

I haven't been to any for a little while, but I plan to start again, work permitting! As for going to see the Men, I will again have to see what hand work deals me for that period....it is a particularly fickle beast in my case.

Might manage to travel across the border if it is.
There doesn't seem to be many from the Edinburgh area or even Scotland active on the board, so the North East of England might well be the nearest events.

Good day to you all. I myself reside with my good Lady in Ackworth, pontefract in the small county of West yorkshire.
I have regarded myself as steam punk since the Goth weekend in April, where we enjoyed the comedy night at the rifle club thanks to Major Tinker.
Since then we have met up with gracious fellows at The Deep in Doncaster and are very much looking forward to meeting more acquaintances in Alton Towers this coming Tuesday.

Me be in Dudley and a number of other places close by at differing times of the year. well, as there seem to be a great deal from Staffordshire, Nottingham, Birmingham and I believe, one from Cradley Heath (Not too far away from me to be honest) I think a Great Mercian Steampunk Society should be formed. If others are for the idea we should create a facebook page and/or meet up in some central position such as Wolverhampton or Birmingham. What say ye?

Sadly the August Shakespeare's Rally in Hanbury clashes with the Victorian weekend in Erddig, so there won't be a BG contingent camping there this time (but that's not to say there won't be folk along for the day, of course.)

I attended Asylum for the first time this year and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
I'm hoping to meet other Steampunky people in my area.

Hmm, Whilst Lincoln is obviously a Steampunk Strange Attractor it seems Scunthorpe may be a strange steampunk repulser, I know of several steampunks, my good lady and myself included who live approx 10 miles from the place, though our 10 miles is in the opposite direction to yours immortalis.

I'm a lifelong resident of Halstead in Essex, along with young steamy inspired Son and bemused Wife.
A very good Monday morning to you all, if that's not an utter contradiction in terms.
I seem to have materialised here unexpectedly without map, compass or combat teabag, so apologies in advance if I appear somewhat bemused.
Currently residing in the South Birmingham Protectorate of St.Irchley, any pointers towards gatherings and meet-ups in the locality would be marvellous, while I try to find my feet in this new and unexplored terrain.
Engagements for events and soiree's that require a recently re-energised noisy steampunk band are also very welcome, and I'd love some contact with other muso's who are also steering erratically in this direction.

Splendid. Please bear in mind that while meets are an opportunity to "dress up" (i.e. don ones glad rags, which is not the same as "playing fancy dress"), it is by no means compulsory. Several people in the past have felt the need to apologise for not having an "appropriate" outfit. This is rather galling, as it implies a fellow Steampunk does not consider the fact that you have made the effort to be there sufficient.

Hi I'm in Manchester close to the Barton aqueduct so almost Salford really. More of an artisan than a roleplayer but have been known to step out in my Sunday best.
Not too far from Sunny Bolton, where I live.
Good day from a small town halfway between York and Doncaster!
Attractions nearby my home include a museum of our Victorian port, a general museum above the library, a park for perambulations (please ignore the motorway traffic), a newly revamped Victorian hotel that hosts tea afternoons, and there are plenty of walking and picnicking opportunities around our waterways. Notable in an outlying village is our most regal Queen Victoria herself, portrayed on stained glass in a charming church.
If I had the faculties required to organise a grand day out, I'd have already done it. Our town is wonderful really, if you avoid certain public houses.

I'm very much looking forward to meeting more like-minded people in the near (retro)future.

There's a fair bit slightly more oop north, sir. Last weekend there was a boat trip up the river Don... Leeds steampunk market is coming up soon... There's an Xmas party in Wakefield coming up, hosted by BB blackdog (at which my band Crimson Clocks are playing)...

Some of us will be helping out with the steampunk exhibit at the SF Ball convention in Bournemouth this weekend (details on the League of Bournemouth steampunks' facebook page).
Planned meets in the future include a trip to the Twyford Waterworks for their open day in May (a lovely site near Winchester) and you can rest assured that we are planning lots of other meets (either social in the Bournemouth area or expeditions further afield) in the coming months, so keep an eye on our facebook page.
I'm halfway through my first year at Leeds uni and there doesn't appear to be many steampunks round here. I cant say I even noticed a steampunk society run by the union :( any Leeds steamers out there?

I managed to hold off on going until the Monday, the weather on Sunday was atrocious (which is something to be considered when travelling in a '52 soft top Morris with a roof that leaks)

I am developing my alter-ego of tinkering gentleman-racer and reading voraciously.
I currently reside in a fair coaching village just south of Durham in the darkest North East of England.
I spend a lot of time up at Beamish, a Steamy Heaven implanted into the modern world.

Are you off to Portmeirion this weekend? It's a lovely location for a friendly steampunk event.
It seems Gloucester Steampunks are quite active. A fair few meetings and events organised (I went to one this past weekend).
There's a bit of activity in Chepstow too.
