It appears that 'What Are You Listening To' Mk. 2 has fallen off the edge of the world. And so, whilst the esteemed Mr. Augustus Longeye sends out the search party he suggests I start a new thread.

It's rather bloody good, actually. It might lack Ayreon's polish in terms of epic rock operas, but the steamy theme and general grittiness more than make up for it.

I was thinking of the original and legendary Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed, repeatedly dubbed 'the worst record of all time' which, when converted to 8bit, sound uncannily like the King's horse at Ascot being beaten to death with Gameboys and a Sega Saturn. A Surrealist joy.

A favourite album of mine. There's a bit of them that reminds me of Jethro Tull. In spite of the somewhat controversial singer who left Tool, I'll risk injury by stating I like A Perfect Circle better than Tool. Really excellent acoustic-to-metal balance that I had not heard ever in Tool. If you like any of this then you should buy the album - the whole thing is good.

Maynard never left Tool as far as I know. APC were simply another band he was in although comparisons between the two were inevitable. I know the original bass player at that time Paz Lenchantin got a bit frustrated with the long periods of inactivity as Maynard was often busy with other things (such as Tool and wine making which I understand is a major business for him now).
Paz finally hooked up with these guys, quite a different vibe and arguably a lot more organic but I really like them.

Tool have actually proved a popular band to cover, particularly for drummers it seems. I must admit the ability to emulate some of Danny Careys' more polyrythmic tub thumping is a good demonstration of skills.
And in some cases, it's downright hot. ;D

The Entrance Band: Definitely more classic, and bluesy especially 3 minutes into the song when it breaks into full blues. Come down to 6th Street in Austin and you will hear this sound in the live music venues. Makes me want to go for a beer ;D ( I just hate the traffic downtown but anyone who loves blues and blues-rock transitional music should make a pilgrimage here). To a lesser extent we also have our fair share of 40s Swing-Country-early rock transitional music - perfect for those rockabillies out there.
Amazing drum cover. Hot chick, she can come down here too ;D Can't wait for the next SXSW festival (I'm sure she has or will be here at some point). Shame SXSW has become so monetised. Try Imperial Zeppelin by Peter Hammill - airships & very steamy
[Available on You-know-where]
Pack your bags, we're leaving
earth, where hate is seething;
nothing's worth believing....
There's no time, make up your mind!
Imperial Zeppelin....
Quick, the engines are turning,
cabin lights are burning,
now there's no returning....
We'll have love a mile above...
Imperial Zeppelin, Imperial Zeppelin, Imperial Zeppelin!
We, the undersigned, being of sound mind,
hereby do declare:
'We henceforth pledge ourselves unto the power
of the Upper Air.'
Doesn't that sound simply super,
Zeppelin visions of the future?
Of course we all know very well
it wouldn't work, but what the hell -
every dice deserves a throw,
and when we get back home below
we can say we had a go!
Overboard we are throwing
seeds of love we are sowing,
hope to God they're growing....
Flying high across the sky:
Imperial Zeppelin!
We will try to do some good,
I don't know why we really should,
I only wish that we could!
Down below they'll see and know all about
Imperial Zeppelin!
Imperial Zeppelin!
Imperial Zeppelin!

I'm one of those weird people who likes to match old technology to new. Since I was a teenager I had a collection of stereo systems and such. I still have a tape deck and an early 1980's Garrard (Gradiente) stereo, but I kept on going with miniDisc, CD, mp3-capable players, digital players of all sorts and finally high grade computer sound cards.
I sorely miss the quality of yesteryears hardware, to be honest. I'm very pleased with the acoustics of an iPhone by itself, but the docks available to amplify the sound are real bovine manure, so I tend to connect it to a 2000's decade Sony system or my Victorian Boombox which is based around a 2000's computer Altec Lansing subwoofer system. I'm very picky with my sound. Somehow portable sound hardware became synonymous with crappy sound and with the advent of the digital formats like mp3 and AAC, people became lazy and complacent about sound quality altogether.
Today I fight that effect by marrying high quality digital equipment to old fashioned analog amplifiers
Anyhow, I was listening to groups dating back to my early years, in particular,
Mecano, a somewhat corny Spanish synthpop /new wave/rock band from the 1980's (that you would have never caught me listening to back then when I was a teenager, but eventually grew on me), but I came across this particular song written by them, in which the band members go back to their national roots with a Flamenco style song in lieu of their pop style. I think for the cover of one of their albums. I thought it was a good interpretation of Flamenco (live concert in 1991)

The dogs of La Manzanilla, Jalisco, singing their eerie music; first one begins yipping, then another joins in, then another, until the whole neighbourhood echoes with high-pitched yips, yaps and yowls, for several minutes; then all is silence again, except for the distant Pacific surf. What sets them off? Who knows? A cat, perhaps, or an iguana? Or just an irresistible urge to sing?
Is it some kind of canine conference? Choir practise? Or an attempt to communicate with entities unguessed at by mere humankind? Whatever, it is a music not meant for human ears. Perhaps they await answering howls from the canine denizens of some distant planet orbiting Sirius, the Dog Star; or, perhaps, a reply from the droopy-eared inhabitants of Pluto, in our own star system, indignant at the demotion of their home world to mere Dwarf Planet status.
We can only surmise, and listen whether we will or no.

Funny how one thing leads to another: The first one was inspired by MW Bayley's topic on Appalachian music. The second was just following Aaron Copeland's masterpieces. And masterpieces they are! The second one is particularly vibrant. Even if you don't like classical music, I bet this one you will like. Copland has a way of translating folk music into classical format, and thus the message is easily understood and relatable. I think the conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Carlos M. Prieto, had a lot of fun.

Breakin' up Christmas!
http://youtu.be/RPH3HR0wCjk (http://youtu.be/RPH3HR0wCjk)
Just thought I should add, the celebration they did that included this song was "Old Christmas," or what some folks call "Epiphany." It traditionally used to start on about Jan. 6 and lasted anywhere from three days to a whole fortnight in some parts of Appalachia, and people would literally move all the furniture out of the part of their house that they wished to dance in; in some cases, it became a sort of "progressive dance," in the same vein as the old churching pastime of the "progressive dinner," though I don't think they called it that back then. There is some tradition and the accompanying anecdotes that in some cases Puncheon Floor dancing (basically the same as "clogging") was done in order to smooth out a new or splintery wooden floor, a common problem with hand-installed wooden flooring back in those times.
Breakin' up Christmas and its fellow "christmas" dancing tunes typically used to go for a lot longer than two or three minutes, in some cases lasting, with breaks (individual solos, so to speak), for nearly twenty minutes or more, sometimes long enough for everybody in large groups (more than eight or so, in some cases twenty or thirty or more) to have a turn on the puncheon floor. In some cases the whole living room or kitchen floor, in some others (as in the movie
Songcatcher), just a sort of wooden pallet with a small bit of flooring raised on wooden runners, for the hollow, booming rhythmic sound it produced when a single person clogged or 'buckdanced' on it.
Thus, the origin of the old "Let's kick up some splinters!" cry.
The tendency of the festivities to last beyond a few days, to a week, sometimes to a fortnight or more, is thought to have been part of the traditional "Hooray Martin, Hooray John" (Or whomever) shouts in the middle of the tune, performed in a slightly more traditional arrangement here:
http://youtu.be/xNn-v52Kj6s (http://youtu.be/xNn-v52Kj6s)
since it often seemed that people were trying to make the holiday last longer than it properly should.

I'm *still* listening to Mono, as I feel they give a fairly good representation of classical orchestration using modern instruments - which is roughly what I would define 'steampunk music' as.

Yeah I'd say that was a fair observation. There's a Norwegion series just finished running here called Mammon. I'd never heard of this lady but that song is on the end credits. Actually that series led me to discover a couple of interesting artists I was previously unaware of (which is nice). :)

Not at all, Sir Boris. Dieselpunk is sort of the mad uncle of steampunk, the one we rarely talk about due to his proclivities. He just lives 50 years ahead of us and spends his time tinkering with engines and leather trench coats. Quite harmless otherwise.

Sir Cogsworth:
Dieselpunk is to the 1920's-1940's what Steampunk is to the Victorian Era / Gilded Age / Meiji Period. Does that make sense? Lost of Aluminium, Steel, Chrome, Granite, Cement, Diesel Engines, Art-Deco, and yes, all that Jazz (literally).

Here's an explanation I gave some time ago about an idea I had for a Dieselpunk scenario in the Steampunk Mexico forum:
The basis for such concept would be a World War II which goes badly for the Allies, and they have to resort to a much more widespread recruiting of Latin American people in the war effort. In the real world, Mexico declared war against the axis and provided enough men for a squadron to fight in the Pacific; most of Latin America declared war against the Axis with the exception of Argentina (correct me if I'm wrong), which remained neutral due to it's strong migrant ties with Germany, and even some German-descended people in Argentina joining the Axis and participating in the war, etc. etc. etc. During the war, the US imported a large amount of workers from Mexico, mostly to work in agricultural jobs, but also in other areas of industry, and at the time Mexico progressed forward industrially, and enjoyed a financial boon coupled with the closest ties ever with the US. The boon augmented and progressed even further after WWII in the 50s "Atomic Age" (a far cry from the present situation, if I say so myself). So all of this combined with a Zoot-Suit aesthetic, the latin version of Big Band music -Mambo, and plenty of futuristic propeller aircraft, would be the backdrop for some smashing Diesel IMHO.

As it appears to be only about 18 months old (that cgi must have been in the last 5 at the very least), I don't think it can qualify as the first steampunk video. And how does a song about heroin have anything to do with steampunk? It's not impossible of course (in fact The Men Who... could well have done one) but I'm curious where you see it in this one?

The original, shorter 1981 version might qualify as Victorian-retro but if we're going on whether there's the odd Pith helmet or two in a video then we might just as well include this from 1979, It's got Fez's as well... :)

I think the whole problem is there is no such thing as steampunk , its just a collection of associations based on a concept that never was i.e. we are not using steam driven pcs to harness the power of moon .
Unlike Punk there's no definitive sound or groups using it other than what Id call " dark cabaret " that i think of either , even that could easily fall into other sub genres unless they happen to be wearing costumes ( which kinda defeats the point of the music doesn't it ? )

The theme written by Ennio Morricone has am old fashioned 1960s orchestral quality that reminds me of Henry Mancini themes.

And similar: Henry Mancini - Lujon

and "iko iko" aka "jockamo"
Iko, Iko - the Dixie Cups (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=0wNSHPQj0W8#)
this songs chorus is actually in Kreyol Lwizian or "Louisiana Creole" and the singers sang it from memory
having learnt it from theri grandma without realy understanding the "patois"
if you are so inclined, listen carefully to the lyrics of "jockamo" and understand that in the early days
the lyrics referred to literal fights to the death between members of the Mardi Gras "Tribes"
capturing and burning the opposition's flag was a coup, and knife fights over the flags were common
with tragic endings.
little known facts:
"jockamo": 'jester' in the creol patios
spy boy: a lookout or scout for a band of "Indians" or "tribe"
flag boy or flagman: flag carrier for a "tribe"
this song also incorporates (subtley) several elements of voodoo

Or the team with the most flame-throwers.

Who wins these games? The man with the asbestos flag.
back in the day, it was the biggest, meanest, baddest, fastest man with a bowie knife -
the Red King -
in another version:
Lookat Dat King all dressed in red
iko iko aina
gonna take his knife and kill you dead
jackamo feenane
In voodoo The Red King channeled a murdurous spirit from the vengeful "Petwo realm" - much like a Viking Berserkergang
Terrible Knife fights were the order of the day when rival tribes met on the dark streets, and it was not until
the 1960's when the "Chief of Chiefs" Tootie Montana fought to bring an end to the violence and brought about the change
from masked street combat to a daylight challenge of "best dancer, best singer, and best costume" .
Tootie died June 27, 2005 but had accomplished his mission, and brought the songs and costumes to a new level.

I've been obsessed with Abney Park's 'In Time' for a few months. The lyrics just tug at my heart strings!
When I'm not listening to Steampunk music I enjoy Ludovico Enaudi, Vangelis, Damh the Bard and various retro stuff my mum and dad also enjoy. I love Dragonforce, when I am in the mood, but listen to 'The Cog is Dead' more than anything else because I am cheesy and like songs with stories! :)

Just popped into this thread - a very intesting read. Hawkwind plus Brian Blessed, the mind boggles! Well, what am I listening to the moment...? Actually, I tend to listen to quite a mix of things at any one time, but following the publicity of her recent concerts I've been revisiting Kate Bush's early ablums, but also curtting it with some Florence + The Machine for a more recent take on the etheric female singer-songwriter.

The Police - Synchronicity 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8976fuIqCo#)
Synchronicity 1
With one breath, with one flow
You will know
Synchronicity
A sleep trance, a dream dance,
A shared romance,
Synchronicity
A connecting principle,
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible.
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectible
(Yet) nothing is invincible.
If we share this nightmare
Then we can dream
Spiritus mundi.
If you act, as you think,
The missing link,
Synchronicity.
A connecting principle,
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible.
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectible
(Yet) nothing is invincible.
We know you, they know me
Extrasensory
Synchronicity.
A star fall, a phone call,
It joins all,
Synchronicity.
A connecting principle,
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible.
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectible
(Yet) nothing is invincible.
It's so deep, it's so high
Come inside
Synchronicity.
Effect without a cause
Sub-atomic laws,
Scientific pause
Synchronicity
Synchronicity
Synchronicity
Synchronicity
Synchronicity
Synchronicity

On the subject of great English eccentrics, one cannot ignore Robyn Hitchcock - I would particularly ask that you seek out "I often Dream of Trains". This delight is also available through You-Know-Where.

Finally I heartily recommend The Hidden Masters from Glasgow. A splendid harmonious hirsute trio with a penchant for snappy neo-psychedelia with a delicious antique twist.

Well that was certainly not what I was expecting! How whimsical.
Greetings,
As much as love the Empire, let us go a tad Germanic.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft "Alles Ist Gut". Clearly they were great chums, and had a preference for all things leather. No bad thing in my book. Simplistic beat but terribly infectious - spiffing for a long march or gentle gander over the moors. Think JP Sousa with added valves.

Lord Hamilton's curry powder is currently the rage of London society where capsules of the stuff have acquired the enviable reputation of the being the suppository of choice amongst the well-to-do-but need-to-go.

This is not your fault, it's due to youtube deciding to make their site secure. All you have to do to make the videos visible here (or anywhere else) is to remove the 's' from the 'https' at the start of the address once you've pasted it in here.

Over this 'holiday' period I have been collecting together, downloading and copying every recording of the John Peel Show I have or can find.
I'm now listening to and editing down every one of them and taking all the best bits with John's intros and compiling them into one very, very long show.
I think when I'm finished I'll have a 36 hour long show.
But that will only cover 1976 to 1980.
Then I'll start on '81 to '85. :)
DEAD OR ALIVE – JOHNNY THUNDERS (1978) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkMIEPsCdUU#)
And will you be uploading it anywhere?

The only cassette I had of the John Peel show was from that era was of the Rezillos playing their Top Five tracks and talking about them. I did upload it somewhere a few years ago, but can't find it online anywhere, so if you'd like a copy, pm me.

CHARLES by the Skids
Charles
Charles got a job in a factory
Drilling sheet metal from six till three
Worked extra hours for a better wage
Got lost in his task quite needlessly
I noticed his brain was a plastic box
His work rate improved 'cause he couldn't stop
He couldn't eat lunch with those metal hands
His legs were supports for new inner glands
Next when I saw him his face was gone
A stainless steel spine now instead of bone
His arms became grafted onto the switch
Six months without food made it quite a trip
His wife soon returned from her open grief
She told his employer she had kids to keep
They gave her the scrap price of his machine
Last weekend Charles became obsolete.

Their first new album for 25 years.

They were supported by The Wolfhounds who also have a brilliant new album called 'Middle Aged Freaks'.
It's also their first in 25 years.

Sounds like a perfect description of my bachelor room-mates.
Not very steampunk, but I'm listening to Dylan's longer tracks at the moment: Hurricane; Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands; Desolation Row; and so on.
Nothing but the rustling of leaves and the rain on the roof.
Frédéric Chopin's Polonaises (on my Boombox). Real music from the period. My favourites were Polonaises Nos. 1-6 (Op. 26 Nos. 1 and 2, 40 Nos. 1 and 2, 44 , 53, respectively), but I had never listened to his posthumously published Polonaise No. 14 (Polonaise in G sharp minor, Op. posth). That really blew my socks off.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
Brucker's ninth symphony, recorded by Furtwängler and the Berlin Filharmoniker in Berlin, 1944.
It makes every other version of the work seem like a commercial jingle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guYmVNRAjjI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guYmVNRAjjI)
It's impossible to convey the emotional impact of this interpretation, though the author this article gives their best:
"Furtwängler once said that "an interpreter can render only what he has first lived through." Of all the conductors who have grappled with the complex challenges of the Bruckner Ninth, Furtwängler was best positioned to understand what Bruckner had achieved. Bruno Walter had hinted at this when he observed that he never understood Bruckner until he became mortally ill. The Ninth is not a failed attempt at a cohesive artistic statement. Rather, it is a complete and perfect musical depiction of a tortured mind: a desperate snatch at a vision that grew ever more elusive, a vain quest for understanding and fulfillment in a world that would not provide it, a fevered groping for fragments of life in the lengthening shadow of death. As he wrestled with his Ninth Symphony, Bruckner stood at the very edge of that abyss. By late 1944, Furtwängler stood there too.
The first climax of the first movement heralds his emotion. The Berlin Philharmonic is fully controlled and its ensemble perfectly together, and yet the tempo is so unstable and dynamically alive that no note falls quite where its predecessors would suggest, as if to reflect the entire orchestra's heaving, nervous desperation. Furtwängler often spent entire rehearsals polishing crucial transitions, but not here; he chops the first movement into dozens of inconclusive fragments, deliberately wrenching the mood from lilting lyricism to raw savagery, the tempos from standstill to runaway, and dynamics from inaudible to heavily overloaded. The movement ends in screaming trumpets, a primordial burst of sheer abject terror as both Bruckner and Furtwängler confronted the most horrifying fear of all: that at the very end of their struggles there would be only a void.".

My first encounter with Motörhead was their version of 'Leavin' Here' on the 'Hits Greatest Stiffs' compilation in 1977. Then their 1st album...which was actually their 2nd 'cause the 1st recorded didn't get released until '79. Saw them live 4 times between '78 and '80, usually with punk bands and at one particularly memorable show with both The Stranglers and Steel Pulse on the same bill. And zero trouble. Only saw them twice after that, once in the 90's and last in 2014 with The Damned. They were the punkiest metal band there ever was. R.I.P. Lemmy.

We went to an organ recital in our parish church last night and I'm still hearing the beautiful music. The organ has recently been refurbished, the organist was taking a break from touring (and often plays in Liverpool Cathedral); he finished with Widors Toccata, my all time favourite organ piece, and we were sitting right by the organ pipes. Glorious!

I do my fair share of Nipponese media scouting, but to be honest, I can't say that I'm enthralled by the music /video itself. After Googling a bit, that seems (pardon me if I'm wrong) to be the opening title of a new Anime (Jan 2016) based on the 2011 Manga called "Dimension W," whose episodes I have not read either... Now I'm a bit intrigued. The animation style reminds me of Cowboy Bebop - for those of you old/appreciative enough to know what that was, if it's along those lines it might be another good one to watch...
EDIT:
As suspected, it's loosely similar in style to Cowboy Bebop - and broadcast in Cartoon Network's Adult Swim

It's actually pretty good, though a bit cutesy with the little girl (teen?) robot thing going on, but that's anime all over these days, apparently. The guy in the red coat looks like The guy from Bebop (Spike), and the voice is similar, but not the same. I think most of Bebop's English language voice actors are either dead, retired, or doing other things these days.
Not spectacular, but above average for what it is, meaning a 12-ep anime of a cult fave manga.
I'm nobody's excuse for an anime expert/otaku, but I do like a good show, and anime often provides such, if you can get past the second language translation issues (meaning English not being up to the Japanese levels of meaning and nuance). I know very little Japanese, and much of my "understanding" of the culture is related to using chopsticks in Japanese restaurants and playing Go on the internet, but I do get some things, simply from having watched lots of anime, having a friend who lives there, and thus follow the news there form time to time.

I still think Cowboy Bebop is on another entirely different league. Pains me to think that I'm so old that the voice actors for CB are already dead :o :-\
The girl reminds me a bit of the Super Sonico bubble headed character Soni Ani.
But the plot becomes more interesting as you move forward. The simplistic analysis of "an extra dimension", which I dismissed at first, turns into an argument on Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (without mentioning that explicitly) being the source of sentience and a fundamental property of life. The argument allows the author to explain away things such as ghosts which he loosely correlates to echoes from parallel universes.

Walking on a rainy afternoon while listening to Herbie Hancock's tribute to George Gershwin, the American classical and popular music composer (from the Album "Gershwin's World, 1998).
George Gershwin spanned both the Classical and the Jazz genres.
The album includes performances by famous jazz and popular artists including Joni Mitchell, Chick Corea, Stevie Wonder, Wayne Shorter, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The repertoire encompasses Jazz music from various historical periods, and has some fascinating African rhythms as well. Music by classical composers like Ravel is included as well in a contemporary 20th. C. re-interpretation, as Gershwin did.

Then going home and finishing the whole album plus some live concert takes of the same material in the album...

and closing with Gershwin's classical piece "Rhapsody in Blue (not in the album)"
Herbie Hancock - Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQsNzqv-P9M#)
If you like Jazz at all, this album is a must have. It should practically be required material in American music history courses.

Many moons ago, I used to listen to this album while driving my grandfather in his 2002 Ford Thunderbird (which was fast as hell and had a killer stereo), when we went out for Chinese "brunch" (i.e. late breakfast or lunch-breakfast for non-gringos)...

Jeezzus, O my sweet Lord! I was browsing through the Internet because someone told me that the nightclub "The Elephant Room," our local Jazz joint downtown had been closed. Like the idiot I am, I didn't even bother to stop by 3rd St. during the SXSW festival because I undertood it had been closed...
Well to make a long story short, not only is the Jazz club open, but sometime next week they are featuring Sarah Arenella, a local Austin-based female singer - who I must say is knock-your-socks fantastic at classical jazz vocals, especially if you're old/knowledgeable enough to remember the voice of Astrud Gilberto in the Cool Jazz albums by Stan Getz in the early 1960s.
This voice is nothing but incredible. I can't believe that we have talent like this yet not discovered by the world at large:

Listen to Song # 2 "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me," and compare her voice to Astrud Gilberto

Today I am listening to 'Old Punk' not 'Steampunk'.
It's 'Ziezo' the latest, and apparently last, studio album by 'UK Subs'.
The band formed in 1976 and now, 40 years later, they have achieved their aim of recording one album with a title beginning with every letter of the alphabet.
It started with 'Another Kind Of Blues' released in 1979.
Now they've reached 'Z'.
Singer Charlie Harper was born on 25th May 1944 (that's before 'D-Day' folks) and when the band formed he was already 32 years of age, a veteran of the London R&B scene, and considered to be 'past it' by many.
Next month Charlie will be 72.
They still perform between 150 and 200 live shows EVERY year.
A newly discovered band for me, (random clicks on youtube this morning)

I know it's not music, but I've been laughing my socks off listening to Bob Newhart routines.
I retold as much of the Bus Drivers' School as I could remember to a friend yesterday, much to his amusement.
Ms. Courcelle, I would suggest that you now to move on to Nichols and May for more comic genius of the same era.

There are quite a few more here (http://030726d.netsolhost.com/WordPress/?tag=nichols-and-may). Be warned - you may get stuck listening for a while...
Meh! Why not? Let's throw some more cheesy Disco Jazz... Actually this'd be a Latin/Jazz/Disco fusion. Herb Albert's "Rise," from 1979. A song grossly overused commercially around the world - so older folks may have heard it. Load up on sugar, grab the keys to your Ferrari 308 (and your Carrera sunglasses), and drive down to Malibu for your nearest key party! :P ;D

How about some more time travel? Continuing with the Disco theme, a rarity and cult classic of a song that only 70's hard-core Disco aficionados would possibly recognize, the French "Early-Synth/Proto-Techno" Disco band "Quartz" (Didier Plus, Laurent Taieb and Patrick Langlade), with the 1978 self titled album and song. The Vogue/Marlin/Musart album only had 4 songs!
"Quartz" (Warning: this is a 12-minute long Disco tune).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWNwK7-4cMc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWNwK7-4cMc)
"Beyond the Clouds" (5 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLnZSjMvXBI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLnZSjMvXBI)
"Chaos" (6 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g892od6774 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g892od6774)
And the fairly nice theme "For Germione" (A more manageable 4 minutes). Which had a distinctively similar flavour to Vangelis' song themes of the early 1980's.

EDIT:
I also found another rare 1977 Disco album, "Deliverance" by the French band "Space." These two albums (Quartz and Deliverance) seem to be tied in period, and are considered underground classics precursors of Electronica music, and some are calling this genre "Space Disco." Again, I can hear a lot of Vangelis in these songs.

having just ventured into finding steampunk music, I am working on digesting Steam Powered Giraffe, The Cog is Dead and Abney park.
I like 3 songs from SPG (Brass Goggles, Suspender Man and Automatonic Electronic Harmonic). The rest tend to be too soft and mellow, like listening to ColdPlay which puts me to sleep. Their craftsmanship is good and the videos are excellent. Just not all my cup of tea.
Abney Park is about 50/50. Some stuff is too electronica and feels less steampunky to me.
The Cog is Dead hits the spot for most of my preference. About 80% are songs I dig.
While using Pandora and YouTube to sample, they tend to randomly inject other stuff. I liked The Last Steampunk Waltz (forget who made it), wasn't as keen on Something Wicked (this way went). vocals weren't to my taste.
I've also seen some good examples of how to SP my Squire Strat I've had disassembled, waiting for inspiration to strike me. I had just planned a paint job, but now I got me some ideas for knobs, levers, meters and brass tacks....
Quotehaving just ventured into finding steampunk music, I am working on digesting Steam Powered Giraffe, The Cog is Dead and Abney park.
Yeah, those are, I guess, the most well-known Steampunk bands. I've been listening to Steam Powered Giraffe for about two years now... only recently got into the other two bands-- I feel the same way you do about the other two; The Cog Is Dead most definitely have a sense of fun; I love the voices John Sprocket does! He seems to be doing an absolutely PERFECT impression of Orson Wells, in the song 'Blood, Sweat, and Tears'. I think you and I have similar tastes... except I like Steam Powered Giraffe a good bit more than you do. :)
If we do have similar tastes--- lemme tell ya, you might also like 'Professor Elemental'; he has appeared on songs with both Steam Powered Giraffe and The Cog Is Dead; I like him a lot because of how funny he is!
Professor Elemental - I'm British !!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFW5eSOHeTU#)
Here's the song he did with The Cog Is Dead:
The Cog is Dead - The Gumbo Song (audio) Feat. Professor Elemental (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j0eX1m2Pss#)
Also--- embedding youtube videos is simple here; just post the link in your comment and remove the "s" from the "https:" portion, so it's just "http:"
Anyway.. onto what I am listening to!
I just discovered Dan Levinson, a leader of several bands devoted to playing music from the 1910-"teens", 1920s, and 1930's:
Peter Gink (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcR3v0VFhTE#)
At the Codfish Ball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlaTnbfP3mc#)
Bethena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmUqV62iccE#)
Ah yes, my wife has had Professor Elemental on her play list due to his tea song (she worked at a tea store for a while) for a few years.
I tend to like choruses, deep voices (or at variance within the song), and a swing beat.
I need to go strolling through this thread to pick up some more artists to check out (obviously, I hit the big three because they are easy to discover).
Just found this lot by chance, bit folky, bit rocky, a bit of banjo (Mandolin?) and bagpipes, to me could be accepted as Steampunk music? maybe?
Irish Moutarde - Raise 'Em All 2013 (full album) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiteFQsqcRE#)I can just envisage, once the tea duals are over and the gin starts to flow from the bar, more than a few people jiggling about, bustles a flowing and uniforms a twirling............?? :-\
I only recently discovered the 'New Albion' trilogy; three operas: one each of steampunk, dieselpunk, atompunk. I heavily prefer the first installment-- the steampunk one, of course--- "The Dolls of New Albion".
Found a great stage version on the Youtube; better instrumentation than the album version imo, and produced by the composer himself:
Dolls of New Albion - A Steampunk Opera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjGLBqD97Zc#)
Very moving story, mostly about several generations of people making very bad decisions over unrequited love. But I do still snicker at the line, "I would have had the lime pie, but I was dying inside."

Classic :) Jean-Michel Jarre was quite ahead of his time for 1976. I remember first hearing his music around 1982 or so...
Later on, Vangelis made waves in the 1980s writing a whole bunch of themes for movies like Blade Runner, The Bounty and so on...

I personally still think Maynard James Keenan is one of the greatest singers alive. A keen wine producer these days, and evidently a good one from the review I happened to catch on tv recently. Involved with a number of bands and projects over the years, the best known being Tool and later A Perfect Circle. Puscifer is his personal project and actually took a little while to grow on me. Still it certainly has now, like the proverbial rash.

Straight from Admiral Wilhelm's quarters on USAS Orca, a collection of Gramophone records. You take your boots off, dim the Nernst lamp and while your eyes adjust to the darkness, you unceremoniously sit on the sofa holding a pint of Doppelbock on the right hand. On the large portholes of the stern deck you can see the moonlit landscape and the stars above. You close your eyes for the first time in sixteen hours. The crew is not your concern at the moment.

Source: Wikipedia:
Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for the solo piano. He gained and has maintained renown worldwide as a leading musician of his era, whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation." Chopin was born in what was then the Duchy of Warsaw and grew up in Warsaw, which in 1815 became part of Congress Poland. A child prodigy, he completed his musical education and composed his earlier works in Warsaw before leaving Poland at the age of 20, less than a month before the outbreak of the November 1830 Uprising.
At 21 he settled in Paris. Thereafter, during the last 18 years of his life, he gave only some 30 public performances, preferring the more intimate atmosphere of the salon. He supported himself by selling his compositions and by teaching piano, for which he was in high demand. Chopin formed a friendship with Franz Liszt and was admired by many of his musical contemporaries, including Robert Schumann. In 1835 he obtained French citizenship. After a failed engagement to Maria Wodzińska, from 1837 to 1847 he maintained an often troubled relationship with the French woman writer George Sand. A brief and unhappy visit to Majorca with Sand in 1838–39 was one of his most productive periods of composition. In his last years, he was financially supported by his admirer Jane Stirling, who also arranged for him to visit Scotland in 1848. Through most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health. He died in Paris in 1849, at the age of 39, probably of tuberculosis.
All of Chopin's compositions include the piano. Most are for solo piano, though he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber pieces, and some songs to Polish lyrics. His keyboard style is highly individual and often technically demanding; his own performances were noted for their nuance and sensitivity. Chopin invented the concept of the instrumental ballade. His major piano works also include mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos, preludes and sonatas, some published only after his death. Influences on his composition style include Polish folk music, the classical tradition of J. S. Bach, Mozart and Schubert, the music of all of whom he admired, as well as the Paris salons where he was a frequent guest. His innovations in style, musical form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism, were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period.J. Wilhelm.

I stumbled on this 6-year old band, Drab Majesty, during SXSW 2018 a couple of weeks ago. Some really good 1980s-style Gothy New Wave music, for those of you old enough to remember Xymox and The Cure, then you'll appreciate this music that sounds like it came straight out of the early 1980s. Their theme and lyrics are based on American UFO cults and they adopt an androgynous persona.

Songs about men and machines seem SP appropriate: Welcome to Machine--Pink Floyd, Machine Messiah--Yes, the I Robot album--Alan Parsons, etc.

I've been building up my steampunk music list on Spotify. I like GhostFire's Last Steampunk Waltz, but awhile ago when I sampled some of their other stuff, I didn't care for the singer's voice.
This time, I gave their whole catalog a try and found these:
Fire in the Hole
Book of Dust
The Confession
Nothing Right Here
Hand of Glory
I dig Hand of Glory enough, that I'm thinking to learn how to play it if I ever get some free time.
I need to brush up on my Aurellio Voltairre. He'll be at Steampunk November this year. Like GF, I'm not sure his whole catalog grooves for me.
Stumbled on a new Russian group.
