Really great photographs selectedgrub! I really like that photo of the Pump House. And you say this is in New Zealand, eh? Just another reason to try and make it out to your wonderful country. If I am not mistaken I believe this is the Northern Club.
The Northern Club Building has a long history of association with the Auckland's social elite, having been built in 1867.
It was constructed as the Royal Hotel, before becoming a gentlemen's club two years later.
Google The Northern Club - Auckland New Zealand, for more images.

Entry did you say Entry - sorry No! - One had to be invited and then only if one is a gentleman with very deep pockets.
We did have a female member of Parliament speak there for breakfast once, but knowing what she looks like that was a very easy mistake to make. ;D
I am not sure if it is still used, looking at Grubs photos, I would say not. A gentleman would never let his garden get into that state. (looking out the window at my jungle - shakes head in dismay)
I do know that the Historic Places Trust has its fingers in the pie somewhere.
I just noticed that there are more windows and an extra chimney in the later pictures.
Thanks for that info.
:)
I like it when it's in full bloom too but it's not as daunting.
The sun was behind at the time of day I went.
For all the dodging of traffic I did trying to take full views from the middle of that busy intersection I didn't get any worthy.
I'll go back one day soon.
Some awesome architecture in the city.
I dug up a few old negatives I had and had them scanned...
They seem to have degraded a bit since the mid-'90s, so it's good that I got them done now before they get unrecognisable.
Viewing them at a large size is not recommended.

They should leave a blanket, for a season it is a real eyesore for our country until the new growth comes through.

Yes , the the [ Rotten Scoundrels] in the timber monopolies that squeeze every inch of NZ for their own selfish ends of their pinus have a lot to answer for .
Thank you Master Grub for a meandering reminisce
Dear Frances, we have a few roads in NZ like your own classic country lanes , though not nearly enough. [ I may be had up for treason but I am deeply ashamed to say NZ history is plastered with postcards of tree stumps and cleared country side ( one day these pictures of paddocks of sheep may be labeled as Kiwiana Victoriana erotica) :-[ )]
Here is the abandoned Bridge to Nowhere - built but never used.
I have only seen it in the distance as a child. Mr Grub may have had a closer encounter. If we ask him prettily he may have some photos to prove it happened

houses like these with gables, verandah and lattice fret work would have originally been more expensive homes with add ons and decoration as the owner became more affluent. Now they lie falling and fallow , many having been used as hay barns and sheep pens by later owners often descendents of farmers homes were built for.

+1.
I would have to hunt through the family albums.
Nothing through my camera.
Thanks for sharing Annie.
Great to see this thread come back up - excellent photos, both locations and relics.
Haven't been taking much of the rusted relics lately Ceir.
I'll try to get out more.

It also hasn't been there long enough to shade out the grass underneath, there's dried grass wrapped around the suspension, and there are no tops sticking out from anywhere under the trailer (there are a few tops visible just beyond the rear corner of it); these details and a hundred others too subtle to identify tell me this trailer gets moved regularly. Is that what you had in mind, jonb, or was there something else?
(We now attempt to return you to regular programming.)

The more I look at these, the more I like them.
They're also the sort of pic that makes me wish I could see a wider angle. The second is obviously the hub of an all-metal wagon wheel of the sort used on binders and other farm implements, but I may lose sleep wondering what a "33-RB" is. ;)
How does grass grow?
Is the length of grass dictated to by conditions or the species? In most species of grass the blade will grow to a given length. Conditions; how well or badly the the grass is growing will dictate how many leaves a given plant will produce. As the picture is taken at a low angle there is actually no information in it that could tell you how well or badly the grass is doing in a given section of the view compared to others. What are the species of grass present? from this picture alone we cannot tell, so we do not even know if the mix is predominantly made up of annuals, or more permanent species as such is the length or grass in the image at full hight or the hight you would expect of the time of year it was taken?
Do we know from that picture if the green is even predominantly grass or could sedge be present?
We do not know if animals are grazing this grass, or what species they might be, for instance if rabbits are present they might actually have a preference to graze under the object as it would offer some protection.
Without knowing how uneven the ground is we cant even tell if the tyres are flat or inflated. Given that what hight is the grass at any given point?
Even if we could tell if the tyres were inflated or not, industrial tyres can remain inflated for years without attention.
Because of the above, a statement like;
Quote thus this trailer has been placed here within a few weeks of the photograph.
seems unjustifiable.
I do not know if I am programmed to point this out, but I admit that I can take delight in popping pomposity.

Jeez! pity the poor farmer that left his trailer in the sheep field for a few days and came back to your essay- the grass is short because the fooking sheep nibble it - Its New Zealand fregawd's sake all the have is sheep and bloddy clouds (sorry Grub!)
As for the RB 33 photo, probably some casting off some Ruston-Bucyrus plant!

Because of the above, a statement like;
Quote thus this trailer has been placed here within a few weeks of the photograph.
seems unjustifiable.
I do not know if I am programmed to point this out, but I admit that I can take delight in popping pomposity.
I may not know as much about grass as
I think, but I'm sure I know more about grass than
you think, and based on some 40-odd years' empirical study, I'd say that field is grazed regularly by either sheep or cattle. It's been fenced for livestock (again, based on 30-odd years experience in fencing.) I can see that the ground surface has not been smoothed, but that it has no more than 10 cm or so of unevenness and no visible rock, so it's been in pasture for some time. The leaves are all relatively short and uniformly bright green, indicating that they're young leaves, but they are not of uniform size or length, meaning they have not been mown to that length. The state of the tree foliage suggests very late spring or early summer, by which time nearly all pasture grasses will have begun growing the upright seed stem which rises prominently above the leaf rosette. (How do I know these grasses do so? Look behind the near tire, below the rear edge of the trailer body, and you see the tall dead stems of last year's growth above a number of small tussocks between the trailer and the fence. These clumps are typical of those which grow over livestock droppings; cattle or sheep will not graze over their own droppings for two or three years afterwards.) The fact that such dead stems are not found growing from under the tires or tongue (where cattle won't bother to dig, when there's more succulent growth mere centimetres away) means that the trailer was not there last summer, and the absence of new stems suggests that the spot where the trailer sits has been grazed sometime this season as well. (Sedge, AFAIK, also grow tall flower stems, and follow roughly the same growth schedule as grasses.) I do see what appear to be a number of stalks draped over the front of the bed, but can't tell whether they grew there or rode there from the trailer's previous spot.
I admit that my observation is merely personal opinion, but it is opinion informed by experience. Your penchant for pomposity-popping is perfectly praiseworthy, but please verify your victim before venting vitriol. ;)
Again, I apologize to Mr. Grub for this divergence from the defined direction of discourse.

Furthermore this thread is Rusted relics not abandoned relics, so what is the point of your original post if it is not to try some way of derailing the thread?

There is recycling here Dear Frances , though sadly it is not exploited to its full potential. Maybe it is the extensive land mass and small population.
Or it could be the "keep it because somebody might be able to use it " hoarding culture as the result of being a far flung antipodean island nation were nearly everything is imported.
There is a debate by international visitors that we are still stuck in the post WW2 era

Historical bronze statues of mermaids and native birds in flight get stolen for scrap. Nothing is sacred here in the search for scrap metal. It doesn't even have to be thrown away; bolted down installations and equipment is regarded as fair game. Bus stop seats can be taken from right under you.

Nice set of photos, thanks for sharing.
Particularly loving the track one.
Here, another photo of a photo.
Bottom right is the Cyanide vats and the concrete supports.

If you didn't know their past, they now look fort/castle like.
Can't you imagine converting this into a home. All those arches could be filled with glass. Lovely.
Not to mention cyanide and arsenic!
Urban Ghosts just put up a list of their top rail yard of the dead articles ( and some new ones):

It's better than it was. The tender floor was ripped up and had been visible out the top, even from right next to it; and they have wiped out the spraypaint erections. Otherwise, no-one is doing anything with it now.

selected, the top one of these three resembles a meso-American style of building.
It would be improper (sometimes impractical) to shoot these myself, so I used Streetview:

Several derelicts as yard art in front of the Rollingstone Hotel. Last time I passed by there was a derelict truck in much worse condition hidden in the carpark somewhere.

Several farm houses in Toobanna, the way into Ingham, have big piles of old stuff hanging around near the road; they just don't appear close enough to Streetview.
^That's what is known as "yard-art".

They had some more wreckage in a pile out the back, but my camera ran out of power (and I'd just charged it the previous night!)
Just something I recently bought off of eBay for £30 (delivered). It's history is supposedly Victorian, but I only have word of mouth to go by. Regardless, I liked it's used look, with a little light rust here and there ... kinda gives it a bit of character :)

I want one.
Thanks chironex and Dr Goodall for keeping the thread alive.
I'll be out of photos for a few weeks till I get my own camera again.
Well, now venomous snake season is pretty much over, I'll be getting out & about a bit with the camera. There are a few bits and pieces I have in mind to take photos of this winter, including old farm machinery and mining bits and pieces.
Might find some train stuff, too!
Very nice vice, Dr. Goodall!

Love the first pic - all that rust against the moss and the living plant.
That's native, Totara I hope it is left to grow.
I would love to see in another 100years.

Nice juxtapositioning, selected. Love the contrast between old metal (nominally 'dead') and live, vibrant green.
Thanks!!

These appear to be abandoned, due to the rust all over their wheel rims and the rails they stand on:

No rust but a few people seemed to enjoy the previous ones.
Nice mini house on wheels!
There is a 'hippy' bloke lives in Tallarook makes 'em - he has three in his backyard. Will probably have to live in one as he has to rent his house out to keep his head above water. One of 'em is built over and in the back of a ute - tiny, tiny space!
Hi Banfilli did you manage to get any photos over in Ireland?
I was on a road trip last week and saw so much rusting junk everywhere, it seems like every third resident in rural areas can't tell "yard art" from "fly tipping". The endless string of historical villages were no exception; they should paint things they don't want to go to scrap, or they will end up with no recoverable metal AND no artefacts to show people.
I didn't get any images, apart from this decoration outside a servo on the way to Sarina:

Which wasn't very rusty. In fact it illustrates my point.

I did, but not rusted relics, alas! Some nice ruins, and a couple of court tombs. One place was Aghaboe Abbey, which still has a cemetery in use. Just outside the cemetery gates, on the wall opposite the abbey, was a green Irish Post box - I am still wondering over that one -took a photo, just in case!!
Will have to work out a way to post some. Which photo hosting site is the best, do you think?

I sorry but since google shut down Picasa I don't know where my photos go now.
I just load them to my blog.
I know photobucket is crap.
Haven't been taking much photo's as I should be lately.
I only have 1 to share

But it's a good one, selected! I have some nice steam train ones from the last run on the broad gauge from Melbourne to Wodonga, and there are some nice bits of old farming and mining machinery around. Can't get near anything much at the moment for all the rain.
We just got rid of ours for a splendid long weekend
Summer is on the way.
Here is one from the weekend.
I like the DOF on the cog.

Nice one of the cable, selected ;D
Weather has changed for the better - another couple of days and may be dry enough to get somewhere!

Yummy!
Unfortunately it was fake rust with some kind of sticky overspray. ???
Out of action for a few weeks after foot op. Then it will be the height of snake season!
Get well soon.
Snakes, we don't miss them here. :D
There has already been a brown in next door's garden, one in the bowling club (other side, next door) grounds, two across the creek ... I hate snakes!
I will obey the dr's instructions - keep my foot elevated, etc., and, as a consequence away from the snakes and the suddenly hot weather. no spring this year, just winter and full-on summer! GAH!
Went to Ingham yesterday, and found these around the library and TYTO restaurant:

I can't identify the one at top; Any idea what it is/was?
Shape is very similar than plane pontoons, but it's length look quite small for war time seaplanes.
Does look like a small seaplane pontoon - or one off the end of a wing on a larger plane like the Sikorsky S-42. Or, could be something off one of the smaller experimental models. There was a wartime experiment with Spitfires to make some into small seaplanes as opposed to the larger flying boats. Or the Grumman UF-1 Albatross. Or just a tank of some sort, like a spare fuel tank for long range flight!
Wing pontoon from a Catalina.
Well, I was nearly right -wing pontoon, wrong aircraft! ;D
Some nice photos chironex, thanks for sharing.
A sort of 20th century sham ruin-type folly, this aircraft hangs around in the forest at the Kuranda Markets after languishing in a scrapyard since being picked out of the sea after filming The Sky Pirates. This is why it has Allied WW2 colours and Trans-Australian Airways markings simultaneously.

Some guns found on the reef.
These old cannon are rather interesting, the "dragon cannon" especially since it is a design unique to Indonesia/ Indochina but saw use for many years by Pirates of the South China Seas!

Indeed, it was found on the Great Barrier of Reefs and the last I heard, no-one knows who left it there.

As does this more fixed installation. This is how you know it's time to admit your rod is a rat.

Strand Ephemera artwork.
Like the armoured car!
That's an SP. The Maltese cross suggests it was in West German use sometime after the war.

A bit of junk left lying around, with a story behind it.
I returned to the museum for Ausarmourfest 2017, and saw this:

Somewhere in the original Kuranda markets, which, by the look of all the little haphazardly piled shop structures, should be more steampunk than you'd think - except it's ended up not steampunk, but hippie. There are some places to shop there that appear a bit more steampunk, though.

At Frogs' restaurant in the Kuranda Heritage Markets, these were part of a museum collection that ended up there.

This was Geronimo, a WW2 (C-47? Or DC-3?) which became an airliner after the war, remaining in the company's possession until the early 80s when it ceased trading. In 1983 it was partially sunk in the sea as a prop for Sky Pirates, a lacklustre attempt at a Two-Fisted Tale. When found in the junkyard, the owner just gave it to the owners of the place that would eventually become the Heritage Markets.

Heap of great photos, selected! Will fire up the cameras in the warmer weather, and get out an about a bit - all very inspirational! Lots of old mining debris around this area, train tracks and trestle bridges. Hmm, I feel a visit to Mt Lawson State Forest on the horizon!
Then get a photo hosting site!
How're ye travelling, selected?

Beautiful, chironex, just beautiful - especially the ones without people!
As for removing the wreck, I would leave the wreck and make people drive around it - the wreck is more important than a few 4WD-ers!
