Adam Rich has long been out of the public eye, but if you were a child in the late 1970's in America you certainly know who he is. He was a child actor who played Nicholas on the TV drama "Eight Is Enough" at a time when there weren't many children on prime time American television. He was also the voice of Presto, the Magician on the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon series. He passed away yesterday at the age of 54.

He was a year younger than me.

And again the Legends go away.

Inna Mikhailovna Churikova (October 5, 1943 - January 14, 2023).

Soviet and Russian actress of theater and cinema; People's Artist of the USSR (1991), laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1997), the State Prize of the RSFSR named after the Vasiliev Brothers (1986) and the Lenin Komsomol Prize (1976). Full Knight of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.

The ugly girl became a great actress.
The phrase that Churikova invariably repeated in all interviews sounded like this: "If you want to be happy, love."

Kikabidze Vakhtang Konstantinovich (July 19, 1938  — January 15, 2023)

A talented Soviet actor.

This won't mean much to most people, but to anyone from Southern Ontario it's significant.

"Hurricane" Hazel McCallion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazel_McCallion), CM, OOnt (née Journeaux; February 14, 1921 – January 29, 2023) was a Canadian businesswoman and politician who served as the fifth mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, from 1978 until 2014.

McCallion was first elected in November 1978, and is the longest-serving mayor in the city's history, having served for 36 years at the time of her retirement in 2014. She was a successful candidate in twelve municipal elections, having been acclaimed twice and re-elected ten other times. Her supporters gave her the nickname "Hurricane Hazel" because of her outspoken political style with reference to the Hurricane of 1954, which had a considerable impact.

It's very sad to see every celebrity I knew in the 70s and 80s pass away.  Unfortunately her passing may not resonate much with our BG members outside of the USA. Myself, only one country away, really didn't know Laverne & Shirley outside of our hotel room when we came to visit family in Texas every year, same for popular US shows like "Happy Days" and "The Brady Bunch," whereas series like Star Trek, The Adams Family, The Munsters and such, traveled as reruns around the World.

Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days and the Brady Bunch all played down here in Australia. Also Star Trek, The Adams Family and the Munsters. The Adams Family was far more popular in Australia than it did in the US when it first came out - as was MASH.

David Jude Jolicoeur, aka Trugoy the Dove, Plug 2 and Dave, (September 21, 1968 – February 12, 2023) was one of the three members of De La Soul, the hugely influential hip hop act, famous for their extensive use of samples, positive lyrics and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres.  Their music in the 90's was a huge contrast to the growing popularity of gangsta rap, but legal problems with the licensing of their use of samples meant that they couldn't stream their music, so haven't been part of the growth of digital music. That was finally sorted out and as of 1 March all their music will be available online.

Sadly Trugoy won't be able to enjoy the upsurge in the group's popularity that will bring, but in his last broadcast he sounded very happy to have finally sorted out the problems after all these years.

A man who took old things, reimagined and repurposed them, and produced wonderful, new, positive creations.

Jo Raquel Welch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raquel_Welch) (née Tejada; September 5, 1940 – February 15, 2023) was an American actress. She first won attention for her role in Fantastic Voyage (1966), after which she won a contract with 20th Century Fox. They lent her contract to the British studio Hammer Film Productions, for whom she made One Million Years B.C. (1966). Although Welch had only three lines of dialogue in the film, images of her in the doe-skin bikini became bestselling posters that turned her into an international sex symbol. She later starred in Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), Myra Breckinridge (1970), and Hannie Caulder (1971).

'Being a huge fan of the 'Spaghetti' western genre I have to say 'Hannie Caulder' is my favourite of those being the closest that a British film company (Tigon) came to producing something in that style. And Raquel Welch's death was coincidentally announced on the very same day I had taken delivery of the remastered Blu-ray of that film.

One thing about his songs that I loved was that the lyrics tended to have strong social messages that were hidden in the joy of them. His most famous song (at least over here), Day-O The Banana Boat Song is about working all night at the plantation, trying to avoid the poisonous spiders and then having to wait for the foreman to count up what has been picked as the workers are paid per bunch.

(I made the mistake of looking at the lyrics of Shaggy's cover of the song. It's all about partying all night...  :-X )

Yep, and no doubt the work was far worse than working in daylight hours, where at least you can see the tarantulas...

Of course down here our banana growers/harvesters have to contend with angry brown snakes as well as spiders. They also have other work/life options if they really don't want to continue that work.

Traditionally, a Queenslanders first job was always in the banana-bending factory.

You beat me to it. It's sad, but most people today will say "Bossa-what?"

Astrud, together with João Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, all from Brazil, and American saxophonist Stan Getz, were at the epicenter of the birth of a new Jazz Genre called Bossa Nova, which is a blend of Brazilian "Samba" and American "Cool Jazz." The genre became popular in the US and around the world in the 1960s, but by the 70s it died out in the US and continued as a "national music" of sorts in Brazil.  During the early 2000s it was reborn into a new genre called "New Bossa" or"Electronic Bossa Nova" which blended Acid Jazz with Bossa Nova and was popularized by Bebel Gilberto, the American born daughter of João Gilberto and Brazilian singer Miucha.

I don't know if this man could be a cultural icon, but he might as well be, because we all use his co-invention every day.

Dr. John Goodenough from my alma mater (and whom I knew personally, though never taught me) passed away at the age of 100. He's the co-inventor of the Lithium Ion battery together with two other scientists and they were awarded the Nobel Price of Chemistry for their work recently. Just before the pandemic, his graduate students were working on solid electrolyte batteries which promise to triple the energy storage of Lithium Ion batteries and it also prevents the formation of string like metallic "dendrites" that tend to form over time inside the liquid electrolytes of batteries and which make a old charged battery short circuit and ignite.

When I saw him mentioned on the news, I thought
- Got a Nobel Prize for his scientific contributions to society
- Lasted till 100 years old

After all of that, I certainly would consider his life to have been good enough in name and nature.

Loved her music. Not the least bit controversial to us. Tragic childhood.

I was saddened to hear that Arleen Sorkin passed away today. She was the original voice of Harley Quinn. Her passing may not get much press attention but she is much beloved among the fandom.

I loved him as Dr. Mallard "Duck" in NCIS. He will be sorely missed but at least he lived a long and fruitful life. May he rest in peace.

That was an actor before my time, but what I did know about him is that his personal life and his family's was as tumultuous and convoluted as the character he played in Stanley Kubric's movie "Barry Lyndon."
