Quote from: bluemonika on April 08, 2010, 10:42:29 PMthere is also this frensh female singer called emilie simon..she makes electro pop music wich is not exacly steampunk but her latest album has a stampunk feel to it. it is called the big machine and i love it :D she even wears a steampunk like costume on the cover of the album.

I know her! She's so awesome. A bit Bjork-ish. Really sweet stuff. Not sure if she could be called steampunk. Perhaps in places.

For those who don't know her.

"I want to see more girl monsters. Girl giants, girl dragons, hulks & trolls.
Scylla and hydra. Girl monsters who are huge and whole. Teeth and plush
fur and long muscled tails. Heads enough to see you anywhere. Gleaming
green or brown. But girl monsters are usually zombies or vampires. Pale
and thin, bleeding or dead. Not Lady Lazarus, not a phoenix from the ash. I
want to see how you get strong without being broken first. Get strong and
stay strong. Get big and bigger." (x)

I wonder if I might suggest my own music for your consideration. I realise that there is some debate about exactly what sort of a thing steampunk music is and I am no connoisseur of the genre but I use a lot of Victorian and Edwardian chord structures, melodies and rhythms combined with 21st century production techniques.

I think your music sounds fantastic. It's very faithful to the music of the time period, but with modern touches. You should join Gilded Age Records! If you're interested, drop me a line at vernianjosh@gmail.com

Cheers!

Might I suggest as a steampunk (ish) piece of music, Fledderjohn? http://fledderjohn.bandcamp.com/ After all, the album cover does contain a picture of an airship...

I'm definitely checking out the groups with the hip-hop tag.  My other-other-other hobby is nerdcore rap, so I'm steering in this direction immediately.  Thanks for the recommendations.

Question for tech minded musos.

I've bought a USB2.0 Audio Capture device to convert some old cassette tapes into digital.

Can someone advise me the name of a reliable, small, hand-held, stereo cassette recorder that has auxiliary outputs (y'know, the red and white ones)?

Cheers M'dears. ;D

You can go to any big box store with an electronics section.  They sell converters you can just plug into the headphone jack of the cassette player of your choice.

Thanks. Are these converters different to the USB types that have the clean-up software included? And I assume this would be stereo yes?

Hit me up with a link of the product you bought.  The "red/white" cables you're asking about are auxillary.  In general theory, you'd plug the converter into whatever cassette player you're using, run rca cables from the converter plug into the usb doohickey, and it should go from there.  I'm a bit of an audio buff so feel free to get a bit more in depth and I'll see what I can do.  PM me.

Dionysos definitely has some steampunk songs. Their album La Mécanique du Coeur is VERY steampunk in my opinion.
Spoiler: ShowHide

Here's my personal favorite by them: Tais-toi mon coeur. (Shut up my heart).
SUBTITLED: Tais Toi Mon Coeur - Dionysos Ft. Olivia Ruiz
"My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake, and they live in a state of constant, total amazement."

i incline to the electronic side, tho' primitive electronica--that does not try to hide the artifice of its making... theremins, pure waveform generated sounds & the like. now, Morton Subotnick may be a meager sideline to 60's kitsch for us, but i can easily visualize another 60's in which modernity's devices were put to another use than making the teen-aged dance.

this album, while more like a zeppelin-out-of-control than any semblance of Victorian aesthetics in itself, has the undeniable advantage of being free:

http://hedgehogcoitus.bandcamp.com/

one day i had this playing in the bookstore where i worked, & a certified schizophrenic of my acquaintance, volunteered the opinion that it sounded exactly like the noises in his head.

Might I cheekily make mention of my new steampunk/prog song 'The Steam Engine Murder and the Trial of Seven Bells John?'

It can be found here:

http://tomslatter.bandcamp.com/track/the-steam-engine-murder-and-the-trial-of-seven-bells-john

It is 10 minutes long and blatantly rips off Dream Theater and Gerschwin. :-)

Thomas Truax still not on the list? (He was the first musician interviewed for the very first issue of Steampunk Magazine if I'm not mistaken)
