Mr Addams

This is a place to list the details of any local Steampunk groups.

This will serve two purposes. It will help people find a group in n their area, and it will enable local groups to make themselves known.

Communication between different groups can only be a good thing, and a directory here will help facilitate this, as well as increasing the profile of each of the groups.

So, if you are the organiser of a streampunk group, or if you know of one, please list the details here.

I Propose the following format.

A splendid idea. Should really be stickeyed though.
Here's our contribution.

GROUP NAME: The London And Western Counties Steampunk Society

LOCATION or AREA: London, expanded to Misslesex, Surrey, Herts and Bucks, although anyone is welcome.

DETAILS OF GROUP: The LWHCSS is a small fledgeling group started for London steampunks. We were aware of the League of Esssexstraordinary Gentlemen, and didn't want to tread on their "turf" with another East London group, so we are centralised to the west. We plan to be holding regular meetups, outings and other shenannigans (once a month or so). Like I said, we're a new group (only about a month old) so we're still trying to establish ourselves here. The primary aims of the group are to have loads of silly fun in very nice places and to be more of a central base for London Steampunks with more local meetups.

MEETINGS: All of our events will be open to anyone who wants to attend, regardless of group "membership" or not. So far, we've (sort of) held one meet already for the Giants Of Steam at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum. I say sort of, as it was at this meeting that the group was concieved. We also have two more events planned. A photoshoot on 17/04 at hte same venue and at some point in the summer - pencilled n for mid July - a picnic.

The Governess

aargh, can't view the map on my phone...

Rev P, we're trying to set up a directory of steampunk bands (on the aural- ocular thread); if you don't mind me asking, would a map such as yours here be suitable for such an endeavour? If so, is it something you've created yourself, or is it something pre-existing that can be adapted for purpose...?

CRIMSON CLOCKS
Crimson in tooth and claw, we disdain (pah!) all attempts to neatly categorise us.
Lugubrious lyrics sung sadistically over trouser trembling bass beats and relentless drums in the deep, all washed down with lashings of vivacious violin and orpheic oboe...
The Crimson Hour is close at hand

I've made a custom map through Google Maps, dead simple to use! Now debating making it a larger project, adding bands/events/etc to it... Hum~

But it could be ideal, I find Maps easier to use, it's something graphic that I can relate to. [I'm so poorly traveled, I don't have a clue!]

Hope this answers your question,

Looking at that map, makes me wonder if there are any groups in the northern third of the UK?

Don't lose heart, the map's only existed for an hour or two. I am sure that there's a group in Glasgow, for some reason "Glasgow by Gaslight" springs to mind?

And if you feel there's no group, you'll find soon enough, that there's enough others lamenting the lack of a group, to form a group.

Edinburgh had a group which used to do 'club' nights (can't think of a better way to describe them) but the group on facebook had its last post in November 2010 and their website seems to not have been updated in ages either.

GUESS (Glasgow University E. Steampunk Society) has not updated its website since March this year, so I don't know about them.

We think there probably arent any others, apart from GUeSS, currently active north of the Wall but would love to hear otherwise.

Glasgow is of course the home of Steam (James Watt, Lord Kelvin etc) and also had the first gaslit shop in the UK and the first purpose built electrically-lit municipal building in the UK.

Well there are some 60 signed up in GUeSS and I am aware of a scattering north of the Forth plus whoever used to turn up at the Edinburgh gigs.

Reverend Panic,
Are you by any means a mind reader? I was thinking about creating a map based on this directory, and low and behold, the next time I visited this topic, you have created one.
I dont suppose there is any way to embed the map at the top of the page, is there?

Still trying to get this topic stickeyed, but no luck yet.

Great minds, sir. Great minds. ;)

I did try, but apparently the Forum doesn't handle the embed formatting, which is a shame. Just comes out as nonsense code!
