Just in case you didnt know, Old factory is now available for FF 3.0, I use OF lite myself, the bookmarks are easeir to read for me.http://www.theme-oasis.org/oldfactory_light_download.php

What upsets me is that i use a XP theme based on Old Factory, and as I migrate to Vista there isnt a port of that theme available, which cuts deep.

I currently use the Old Factory Black theme, with the Aston2 Virtual Gold start menu replacement:




The clock on the upper right is the Grandfather Clock yahoo widget, which has a nice bell toll, and the guage next to that is the Steam Guage CPU meter widget. I found the wallpaper through a google search.

I also use a variety of odd fonts for my system fonts, and I'm currently trying to find a way to hack all of the system's icons. I am also looking for a good set of cursors and sounds.

I REFUSE to "downgrade" to Vista.

I'm on a Mac that uses Leopard. Back in Tiger, I used Shapeshifter to fulfill my clockwork desires, but so far there hasn't been a way to change the "theme" of my mac. So I've done it the old fashioned way with custom tweaking and the like. I'm still hoping for something in the near future, but this will have to suffice.

The background does change as time changes, and I got the "Wallpaper Clocks" from http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaperclock/. This one is called Patek Phillipe. I liked the antique look of it along with the exposed gears.

The icons are my own creation, with a typewriter key as the main "toggle" and picture of the application. I used the Developer Tools that come with Leopard and "Icon Composer." It was pretty fun to make them and finally have exactly what I wanted for my dock. The main system icons I changed with a free application called, "LiteIcon" and the specific applications were changed by swapping out the usual .icn image for my custom. (I ALWAYS back up the original image and so should you!) Also, the dock was modded using "Dock Switcher" and a file called "Cherry Dock".

I'm pretty happy with what I have so far. I'd still love to change the boring old grey for the Finder along with the Sidebar and the Red/Yellow/Green colors for the Close/Min/Max buttons at the top. Something too look forwards to, I suppose.

What is that for a theme on your start menue? Did you change all icons manualy? Is there a software for it? I just knew it from MacOS 8 and 9, but never saw it on a modern Mac.

Start menu? Do you mean the date in scripted text above? That I changed with TinkerTool (Again free). Unfortunately it doesn't apply to everything on the Finder in Leopard(not sure about Tiger), but it does transfer over to other applications. You can choose whatever font you like. It also tweaks some other stuff, which can be useful.

If you meant the "wood" background for my Finder windows, with a window open on the Desktop you go to View --> Show View Options and then at the bottom of that window will be "Background" and you can select a color or a picture. I used a generic wood picture I found using Google. Make sure that is BIG as it has to fill the entire window part of it. At least 2000pix, or you'll have space that is the usual white color. It won't tile it for you, sadly. I'd do this in for your main hardrive and then click "Use as Defaults" so that it will apply for all of your Finder windows.

If you want to change your icons the easiest way is outlined here: http://pimpmymac.wordpress.com/2007/03/05/how-to-change-icons/. The nice thing about this way is that you can just take plain 'ol jpeg or png files, copy the picture and use it as the application or folder picture. Like that gear I used for my main hard-drive (two posts previous). That's a jpeg, not a custom made icon.

Main icons like the Finder and Trash can only be changed using LiteIcon or Candybar (which isn't free), and that application needs .icns for it to work. But it's really simple and I like it. Candybar also simplifies the changing of applications to just dropping .icns files into the image well. But again, it isn't free, and it won't always work, especially with multi-icon applications (won't work at all with iCal).

However, some have multilayers or "packages" that make up one application such as iCal or Adium. Then you have to right click the application and select "Show Package Contents". Then you have to find all of the icons for that application and replace the main ones. They are usually in the "Resources" folder. You don't have to change them all, just the ones that show up on your dock and in your Applications folder. You can find out more about how to change them online. This harder way REQUIRES .icns files and you can't just cut and paste pictures. If you have Developer, use the Icon Composer as it's just great!

Again, I would always back up the original icons as you never know when that application could take a hiccup. I've probably typed WAY more than you wanted to know, but hopefully it was helpful.

What version of MacOSX are you running? If you have Leopard, you can download Developer Tools for free off Apple.com and make your own icons using Icon Composer. And you can use LiteIcon to change the finder and other system icons. I've a post of my screen shot a few posts below if you want to check it out.

This is beyond brilliant! How is it done?

Gnome is quite easily customised:

• Wallpaper is two panels of the Edison Bar photos, enlarged to 1680x1050px with no ill effect
• Screensaver (not shown) is a collection of vintage photographs and illustrations in keeping with steampunk aesthetics
• Panel and icon typeface is a Bookman ripoff for Linux
• Panel colour is beige for readability
• Custom theme controls are "Serenity", window borders "Brace2", icons "Humilty" (though I'm working on my own now)
• Firefox is skinned with OldFactory Silver/Rust
• iGoogle is skinned with SteamPunk
• Media player is Xine with the OMS_Legacy skin

O for the WinAmp media player - in a previous incarnation I used and loved that Unison Brainstormed skin! May eventually develop a similar one for Xine.

I'd post mine but it's just the Old Factory with a different wallpaper.

Though if you you got to Stardock's site and get CursorFX they have a nice set of animated gear type cursors.

My personal favorite is one called GearEx.



And no, the main cursor is not quite that huge.
