A very interesting article from the Antipodes, featuring our very own mad uncle:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/futuretense/punking-our-history-and-the-future/4929678

'People ask me why am I attracted to Steampunk and how long will I stay in it?' he says.

'And I say, well, as long as it retains a sense of humour and doesn't take itself seriously then it's all good fun. But if, for some reason, a Steampunk artist creates something they decide is representative of man's inhumanity to man, then that's it, it's all over!'

Genius.

Funny thing is, while I was at art college, everytime I was asked what anything I produced represented, I replied "Man's inhumanity to man"...

Since you're now rubbing shoulders with Turner Prize winners, I hope to see the following in print before the next decade is out:

In his middle period Herr Doktor rejected the anthropocentric flavour of his earlier work in order to focus on a series of static tableaus which reflected the greater cosmic theme of 'Martian's inhumartianity to man'. Having covered this, he began to incorporate more of the spontaneity of performance art, with a late-period series of playful pieces that deconstructed the relationship between 'artist' and 'critic'. Most notably 'Gallery Door Pie-Throwing Machine No.5' and 'Room With No Oxygen Or Doors'.

Such are the feeble bases on which many a public character rests.

Yes, but your war machines are inhumanely good, and besides its all mans inhumanity to Martians in your case. Don't let the Battenburg fool you! It's a pink and yellow cakey trap!

I know this has a thread in Geographical, but it is now news, not just local.

http://boingboing.net/2014/02/20/mall-cops-freak-out-over-steam.html

QuoteA group of steampunk cosplayers arranged to meet up at Westfield Plaza Camino Real near San Diego to ride the mall's Victorian carousel. But Westfield's mall cops were terrified of the cosplayers and evicted them all, escorting them to the door, calling the cops, and making them wait until the police arrived (the police basically shrugged and said, "Look, it's stupid, but it's their mall").

The mall cops -- and their corporate overlords -- cited a variety of dumb policies in support of the action, including a ban on wearing costumes that obscured the wearer's face (which didn't describe the cosplayers' outfits), a ban on gathering in groups larger than three (ORLY), a ban on photography without the subjects' permission (the steampunks, having gathered to have their photos taken, can be presumed to have consented to the pictures). Basically, it's a case of mall cop authoritarianism followed by the usual bland corporate doubling-down.

It goes on, and quotes much of what has been written elsewhere.  Thank you, Cory!

Oh Captain, it looks like such fun.

Yes, the cruises have been unexpectedly fun.  Some of the other cruisers also mentioned how frustrating it was to explain the differences between cruises and cons.  Sort like the difference between going to college and going to a college football game.
I would hate to not see the same performers (Tasha, Egress, Mary Robinette Kowal, ) show up since they have sort of become part of the group.  I would not mind seeing more performers like Robert Brown (and the rest of Abney Park) again, Prof. Elemental, etc...  too.
Definitely more available (but not obligatory) activities like daily dance classes and fencing even if it means leaving weapons with security.  Maybe I would feel less guilty about the constant eating then.   ;)  We are beginning to grasp how easy it is for us to take over any cool parts of the ship like clubs, top deck gaming areas, hot tubs, and gyms.  After the first cruise we worried about getting too cliquish so we tried hard to absorb the new folks this cruise.  We seemed to constantly be engaged with our fellow cruisers and still did not have enough time to hang out everyone.  It is evolving but, maybe by accident, the cruises are off to an impressive start.

Articles in both the Guardian and the Telegraph that Education Secretaty Michael Gove is into the chap hop stylings of Mr B and Prof Elemental. He also like the Pre-Raphaelites and Gothic Revival Architecture.

Please don't tell him about steampunk, as he would probably love it, but it would destroy our credibility.

Mr. B. was on Newsnight last night. I thought it was to discuss 'Chap-Hop' but he merely closed the show with a tune.

Does this count as a silver lining on an otherwise very dark cloud? It is always odd when we find things in common with someone we generally dislike or disagree with. Inevitable, but odd. Maybe he could be reshuffled into Culture, Media and Sport? As an ex-journalist for news international, being charitable it would seem to be where the well spring of his "talents" flow?

Sorry, I realise politics is a bit of a no no.

Mr B has a comment piece in today's Guardian which shows that perhaps chap hop is coming out the winner in this by exposure to BBC/Guardian journalist types of the oeuvre, rather than the humanising of Mr Gove.

It is just a pity the Now Show is on Hiatus, one could easily imagine a guest spot and duet with Mitch Benn.

Many dubiously minded people have enjoyed many worldly and worthy things. He's doing well to monopolise on the exposure, however it maybe generated. Mr B seems to be fairly canny when it comes to navigating the tides of popular opinion.

Well, we made it into Websters Dictonary!

"Selfie," "tweep" and "turducken" were among more than 150 new words and definitions added to the 2014 updated Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the publishing company said on Monday.
The additions to the U.S. dictionary reflect the growing influence of technology and social networking, the company said.

One new entry is "steampunk," defined as "science fiction dealing with 19th-century societies dominated by historical or imagined steam-powered technology."

"Of all the fishes in the sea, my favourite is the bass. He climbs up on the tall sea weed, and slides down on his hands and knees."

I've not heard of or seen the word "tweep" before... it makes me think of a tweet by a derp.

Turducken is a modern American interpretation of an English Elizabethan feasting dish.

The Elizabethans would put an olive inside a wren inside a quail inside a hen inside a duck inside a goose inside a swan inside a peacock (or something like that... I forget exactly the fowl involved).

The American version is a boned hen inside a boned duck inside a boned turkey. I've never eaten one, but I saw them a few times when I lived over there.

from the name and description I am not sure it is a Elizabethan feast I would wish to partake in. It does not sound very appetising

I agree, sir.  Chiduckey would have been so much nicer.  None of those turducken in a swimming pool moments.
