There's a picture in today's Metro of a couple (a man and his 10yr old daughter) looking resplendant in their steampunk attire photographed at Whitby this past weekend. Of course The Metro labels them as 'Goths' because it was the WGW.... ::)

Yes, I saw that too. Firstly I thought: "My, they are looking splendid." then my right side brain engaged thinking...... "ah metro press with 2 steamy people at a Goth event.... I do hope no one takes this the wrong way". Then sense resurfaced: "It's a picture of 2 people, you take from it what you want too. Which has no bearing on what it IS; which is a photograph of 2 people BEING SPLENDID!"

Thought consummated,  I turned to Nemi and all was right with the world.

Do any of us know them? Their names are in the paper?
I say, Joe it's jolly frightening out here.
Nonsense dear boy, you should be more like me.

Always a delight to see young sons and daughters embracing whole-heartedly something they're parents are into.

Of all the things in this world a parent can get their child involved in, steampunk is one of the gentler and much less psychologically scarring than some I could mention. Sure beats freezing to death on the terraces.

Those of us with long memories/functioning time machines will note that the father/daughter couple in the metro are the very same as them what appeared in many papers last year. Check the first post in this thread for proof.

Also, this (which is not strictly news, so feel free to remove):

That is outrageous! Physical aggression and destruction of his property! I'd have  reported the Neanderthal jerk to the Police for assault!

Such are the feeble bases on which many a public character rests.

It's a satire site, for those who do not frequent such.

They've actually done a few on Steampunk, including how Steampunk is a good way to protect your virginity. As Rockula has said elsewhere, the pieces show a degree of knowledge and are probably written by a closet Steampunk :)

Or maybe even someone....... IN THIS VERY ROOM! <Gasp!> <Splutter!> <fruit!>

Anyway taking this satire at face value, beauty alone is possible but its effect is lessened without the structure to support it. A few hours a week studying the works of the Marquess_of_Queensberry, avoid this tawdry fiction from becoming a tragic reality.

In an ideal world no one should have to fight for a look or even a thought for that matter. It is regrettable, but not unsurprising, that this is not the case.

I never post much on this forum and instead post usually on the Steampunk Empire. However, after reading this thread the community makes me smile.  :D

Re: topic title

(a little off topic, but about what the news says in general about Steampunk).

Galveston, Texas every year does something called "Dickens on the Strand" in honor of Charles Dickens. It's a Christmas celebration and in the last few years Steampunk has been welcomed there.

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/World-of-steampunk-joins-Dickens-on-The-Strand-1698573.php

The link is an article on it, however, the picture is not steampunk, but rather general carolers.

I wonder if Steampunk will be as big there this year. There will be a competing event in Texas called Weird West Fest in Giddings, Texas.

Two passing mentions on the BBC website today. Maybe I'm not reading enough, but this is the first time I've seen steampunk mentioned in the background of a mainstream article, rather than being a curiosity to focus on.

*edit* Ignore me, one of those articles is from ages ago.

I caught the end of a local (London) news report about a 'neo Victorian exhibition' at (I think) the Guildhall. Caught a glimse of what appeared to be Herr Doktor's Victorian Space helmet.

Just Googled it...

Forthcoming exhibition: from Saturday 7 September to Sunday 8 December.

From the macabre to the quaint, the sensational to the surreal, 'Victoriana: The Art of Revival' is the first ever exhibition in the UK to offer a major examination of Victorian revivalism in all its forms.

Featuring graphic design, film, photography, ceramics, taxidermy, furniture, textiles and fine art, this multi-media show explores work inspired by the 19th century and created over the last 20 years, highlighting the ongoing influence of the Victorian age.

'Victoriana: The Art of Revival' brings together 28 major contemporary artists who encapsulate the many forms and motivations of modern takes on Victorian style. These include Yinka Shonibare, Grayson Perry, Paula Rego, Dan Hillier, Paul St. George, Rob Ryan, Kitty Valentine and Jake and Dinos Chapman.

Is "Glimpsing Herr Doktors Space Helmet" a euphemism ?

Those are serious artists, do they know they are playing in our sandpit? Some of it is very steampunk, rather more than just Victorian revival. I wonder why they didn't use the label steampunk? It clearly is a shorthand the public are beginning to know.
Proudly giving the entire Asylum The Finger!

'People ask me why am I attracted to Steampunk and how long will I stay in it?' he says.

'And I say, well, as long as it retains a sense of humour and doesn't take itself seriously then it's all good fun. But if, for some reason, a Steampunk artist creates something they decide is representative of man's inhumanity to man, then that's it, it's all over!'

Funny thing is, while I was at art college, everytime I was asked what anything I produced represented, I replied "Man's inhumanity to man"...
