I want to tell about Russian and Soviet films. We're almost steampunk movies. But Fima about which I want to tell, they like me and want to share with you.

Start with the basics.

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

"The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson" — cycle of the Soviet films 1979-1986 years directed by Igor Maslennikov, a screen adaptation of the works of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The cycle consists of five films (11 episodes total duration of 766 min).

The very positive feedback the series received in England. Critics have pointed out that the creators of the show carefully treated the original, and the works of Conan-Doyle passed with true love the true connoisseurs of the classics of the detective genre.

In 2005, Vasily Livanov became an honorary member (MBE) order of the British Empire for the best screen image of Sherlock Holmes, embodied not by the British, and on 15 June 2006 the British Ambassador in Moscow he was awarded with the badge of the order.

In Moscow near the British Embassy is a sculpture depicting Holmes and Watson in the performance of Livanov and Solomin.

"Alexander Nevskiy" — Soviet art historical film about the medieval Russian Prince, who won the battle with the Teutonic knights on lake Peipus April 5, 1242. Belongs to the galaxy a classic of Soviet historical films of 30-ies and is considered one of the best works of Sergei Eisenstein. The music for the film was written by the famous composer Sergei Prokofiev.

These two names, Eisenstein and Prokofiev, already that would be enough to watch a movie.

The film is certainly old, a lot of historical inaccuracies and Quaker guns. BUT I still gladly revise it.

A bit of humor. A short funny movie.

"Neptune Holiday". Soviet full-length color feature film put on a film Studio "Lenfilm" in 1986. The film was the debut for Director Yuri Mamin and by script writer Vladimir Vardunas.

For the lazy, the retelling of the story.

The action takes place on the eve of 1986. Every year on 1 January in the village of Small Heels is the "Feast of Neptune". It's a great movie. It really should look. Lots of meanings, lots of humor, lots of unusual. In Russia it has become a cult.

"Kin-DZA-DZA!" — full-length two-part Comedy feature film in the genre of dystopia, filmed at the Studio "Mosfilm" film Director Georgi Daneliya. The film was released on 1 December 1986.

Ordinary people suddenly find themselves on another planet. Planet desert planet the trash. It ordered the wasteland from Mad max. Only instead of aggressive gangs, petty thieves and hard cops. A lot, a lot of rust.

The Terrans really want to go home. They will be fleeced to the bone, they will work as street musicians, they will arrange a coup, will visit the "humane" civilization, but to return home.

It's not action. Although there is a Superman - uncle Vova.

If I had the chance, I would be all forced to see this movie.

Oh yeah. It is simply called "Aelita" (Аэлита).

"Aelita" — the classical Soviet silent film by Yakov Protazanov, free adaptation of the eponymous science fiction novel by A. N. Tolstoy.

I read this book. There is no Pro-earth adventures and torments the engineer Elk. I'm still amazed at the simplicity and humdrum beginning of the novel.

The film was preceded by an unprecedented advertising campaign in Newspapers, which began about six months before the premiere on February 26, 1924 in "Cinema Newspaper" (published by the film company "Mezhrabpom-Rus"), first published intriguing ads with the text "ANTA... ODELI... UTA..." — without any explanations (but in some cases, several such ads on the same page). From 15 April the ads were accompanied by explanatory text: "for some time radio stations around the world began to receive strange signals..." Closer to the premiere (on September 19) for the campaign was connected to the newspaper "Pravda" in which a mysterious signal has been reproduced in a more "transparent" form: "Anta... odELI... uTA" and in the advertisement, published on September 24, an intriguing inscription was directly included in the announcement of the premiere screening of the film in the cinema "ARS".

But "Mars" suits and the "Martians" is popular at the time in Soviet Russia constructivism. 20-ies, they were full of a new, flight of thought of searching.

Dieselpunk and Atompunk follow Steampunk.

While I won't deny that Steampunk now has elements of punk - and thus the social dystopia you talk about, Steampunk is a lot more general than that. What I will agree with, is that Solaris is not retro-futurist, and thus may not belong the the family of Atompunk, properly speaking...

The original novel by Lem is very cerebral, and focuses primarily on the science aspect of the story, while the Russian movie created a more global view that encompassed all aspects existential, sci-fi, and romantic as well. The American movie was a melodramatic plot surrounding the romantic relationship between the psychologist and his dead wife (different names between the movies and novel). I thought the Russian movie's plot was much better, though at times could be very tedious.

The existential aspect of Solaris is very important- pondering on the significance of being human. Can you "capture a soul" in such a way? Are you a mere copy? Or are you the same? Limited by the memories of those who recreated you on Solaris?

Solaris is a "cult classic" movie, and while not being cyberpunk, it does go well with other cyberpunk movies that often touvh on the existential aspect of beiong human (e.g. Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, etc.) What does it mean to be human?

I'm not a literary critic, but I can see that.
Steam-punk, and earlier cyber-punk, this certain Canon of Western fiction. In ...–punks tells about unorganized society, where there are different strata, there is intense competition between people. And it is from this increase the conflict in a literary work. Such fantastic realism.

In Solaris and other conflicts, philosophical:
1) What is man? Why does he live?
2) What is humanity? What is his purpose?

These are perennial philosophical questions. LEM and Tarkovsky answered these questions opposite.

"Stalker" is a Soviet science fiction film-parable directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, filmed at the Studio "Mosfilm" in 1979 based on the novel "Roadside Picnic" by the Strugatsky brothers.

The film, as usual with Andrei Tarkovsky, almost nothing in common with the book Strugatsky.

Only the total overall idea of the setting.

The film is set in a fictional time and space; the characters do not have names — only nicknames.

Approximately twenty years before the start of the film registered the meteorite. In the area began to occur abnormal phenomena, people began to disappear. The place is called "Zone", and rumors about some mysterious room where you can run desires: most cherished, the most sincere, the most heartfelt. The area was cordoned off by the military cordons and barbed wire.

The protagonist of the film — recently released from prison the man they call "Stalker". He lives in poverty with his wife and sick daughter. Stalker makes a living by organizing illegal expeditions into the Zone, despite the protests of his wife. He was hired by Explorer Professor and Writer.

Literally on the day, I heard that the U.S. plans to make a TV series based on the book "Roadside Picnic".

Amphibian man. Wonderful, beautiful, romantic and fantastic film. With remarkable underwater footage

Is based on the eponymous sci-Fi novel by Alexander Belyaev.

Fishermen and pearl divers of Buenos Aires, scared in the sea appeared a mysterious "sea devil". I found it really hard to understand the Russian sung with a hispanic accent.

But the Barry Sisters' songs are great. I especially liked those sung in Yiddish. I realise now that I've heard them singing "Bei mir bist du scheyn" for decades without knowing anything about them or the rest of their songs. A quick trip to Wikiland made three hours pass in moments.

Thank you for your kind words.

But a little be a wimp. There is no hispanic accent. I can't hear him. And the song was recorded in just 20 minutes. The singer hardly managed to put a hispanic accent.

But there is a special intonation. They should give songs of vulgarity and depravity. After all, the song symbolizes the cruel, cold world where everything is for sale. That's why I called it capitalist

In the film, during the song, the singer dropped some items of clothing. But it felt disgusting and out. And the song was a verse shorter.

When I first started writing in this thread, I knew I was bound to be this movie. And today it showed once on TV.

And so - The prisoner of If castle.

"The prisoner of If castle" is a Soviet adventure film directed by Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich, released in 1988 at the Odessa film Studio. The film is based on the novel by Alexander Dumas "the Count of Monte Cristo" and consists of three parts: "Abbe Faria", "the Count of Monte Cristo" and "I will repay".

I can't say that the film is perfect, in places it seems unfinished. But it is bright, dynamic and catchy.

It assembled a team of great Soviet actors.

But of course the main one, Victor Avilov, who plays the count of Monte Cristo. And Eugene Dvorzhetsky, Amont Dantes and albert de Morcerf, son of Mercedes and Fernand .

And songs performed by Alexander Gradsky.

"There once was a dog" — drawing the Soviet animated film directed by Eduard Nazarov. Original title — "Dog's life". Created based on the Ukrainian folk tale "Sirko".

Great cartoon, funny and kind. Is the cult. And not only here.

The bronze monument Wolf weighing about 200 kg was built in Tomsk in 2005. The authors — caster Maxim Petrov and consultant artist Leonty Usov. The wolf can speak eight phrases ("right Now I sing!", "God help you!", "Well, you come in, if that!" etc.).

Steel sculpture of a Wolf weighing two tons by the sketch artist Michael Ivashko established in Angarsk, Irkutsk region in 2007. When stroking the belly of the Wolf "right Now sing!". Wolf "knows" and other signature phrase.

Regarding Stalker: I never watched the movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed Roadside Picnic, the novel it was based upon, in German translation. Thanks to Cold War shenanigans, pretty much all Soviet science fiction also exists in German translation. One of my projects is to read everything from the Noon Universe, also by the Strugatsky brothers.

Yes, Strugatsky brothers, the great Soviet science fiction. They, and Yefremov, Kir Bulychev, are the face of Soviet fiction.
