My fellow Brass Goggleans:

Capital! Steampunk is pleased to announce an event this coming August.

Artspace Gallery in Petone have invited us to assisit in putting together a three week exhibition of steampunk art.  The title, or theme if you will, is Cognition.  This is intended to convey a number of meanings; first, that some thought has gone into the works; second, to indicate recognition of the artists in our community.  And also, well, you know, cogs ...

The exhibition opens on 6 August and, alongside the artworks, we plan to hold maker workshops.  Some will be for the kids - make your own goggles from plasting milk bottles - and some are intended to appeal more to those with an interest in jewellery or costume.  If any BG members are anywhere near this part of the world in August we'd be delighted to see you.

I've contacted a couple of BG members about entering their work and I'm looking forward to seeing it here, but some of you may know of other artists who would like to take part.  Expressions of interest in theory close at the end of this month, but we have no problem keeping things alive for another week or two.  You don't have to have created your artwork yet, but we do need you to let us know you'd like to be involved.  There's a registration form

here, or you can PM me if you need to know more.

Colonel  , I shall pass the good word on.  Is there a Facebook link to pass around ?

Colonel Hawthorne

Indeed, madam, and I thank you.

Hop onto Capital! SteampunkNZ on Facebook; you'll find it pinned therein.

I thought I recognised it from somewhere.  It is an intriguing event.

Colonel Hawthorne

We hope so. There have been a number of rather nice things entered in the last few days - even from the US and Aussie.

Please be sure to share as much as you can with us not in NZ.

Good day, all.  Cognition has now opened and the reception is positive.  For your delectation, here are some of the artworks and one or two other photos from opening night.

All photos by Werner Kaffl.  Unless otherwise noted, all works are by New Zealand artists.

'Kaleidescope' beaded tin bag by Anney Day (Anita Davis) from the US:

One of our main centrepieces - a  (working) wet-plate camera, built into an old clock - by Brian Scadden (Carterton):

Two lovely ray guns by Christian Pentecost (Oamaru):

Two mixed-media pieces by Therese Quinlivan (Wellington):

Jewellery by Paula Garcia (Wellington):

The magnificent Havana coffee-making top hat by Hills Hats (Wellington):

Our headwear collection.  Hats by (ahem) myself, Hills Hats, Mrs. Hudson (the younger) and Cat Goodman (all Wellington):

'Expedition Portrait' by Ross Payne (Wellington):

'Gunner Victoria' by Heinz Speyer (Wellington):

A ray gun, seen previously on Brass Goggles, by one Col. Hawthorne:

'Seraphina's Travel Logue' by Trish Kelly (Wellington):

Racing teapot S.T.E.A.M.B.U.S. by Col. Hawthorne.  Well, we had to have one there:

Here be steampunks:

Here be more steampunks:

You may recognise this one - 'Nevermore' by Brass Goggles' own Spacebovine from Adelaide.  He was being closely admired when I was in the gallery yesterday:

Some splendid-looking Colonel chap with the gallery owner Alfred Memelink, making our opening speeches:

There's a lot more, but that should give you a taste of what we're doing.  There's now talk of making it an annual event.
