It is interesting the number of "mature" steampunkers there seem to be.

I wonder what percentage are old gamer geeks, scifi officionados, historical reenactors liking the historical fantasy, or tinkerers attracted by the DIY aspect.

You would be correct in that regard for me at least. Why, I have lived in the past my whole life since I was a wee child. I grew up watching Upstairs Downstairs, Dr. Who anything set in different era's. I played Dungeons and Dragons as a teen and being a girl it was almost unheard of. I have attended conventions, from sci fi to fantasy to now Steampunk. I never want to grow up, there is to much to learn from the past and in ones world.

So am I in ? hehe

Epitaph for a broken soul


She sits in the club, the smoke and stale ale permeating all around her. To look at her you would see a maiden past her prime. She was no doubt beautiful once, a natural beauty I would wager, which is the best kind. Not the type that powders and preps for hours on end, vain and always judging those that pass her way. Nay, a beauty from within that shone like the brightest stars on a summer's eve. Yet, now she looks worn-out and broken. Her blue eyes shed not a hint of life. Heartbreak just seems to surround her like the embrace of long lost lover's warm arms.

She knows no one but the demons and bitterness that have so consumed her once caring soul. None can even describe the heart break she has seen as her one dream evaporated time and time again.

I watch as another shot of poison in a glass is poured and placed before her. She makes no eye contact with her host, this defeated soul, lifting the glass to her unsmiling lips and drinking yet again from the chalice of demise. What has life done to this loveliness? Whom or what?

I feel I should raise from my own comfortable seat and try and coax the fiend which devourers her life force. Would she though tell me? There is only one great thing that could possibly drain her soul and it is...

Miles (a sailor)Martin  is wearing a deep blue colored bell bottom trousers, white shirt,waist coat with a sholder holster with the butt of a m1911 protruding and a saber hilt over the other sholder, seems to any onlookers that he would use the gun in the right the sword in the left. The shirt has patches on both sleeves, the right sleeve shows a Thunderbird and on the left a NM flag with crossed black cannons over a red 45 superimposed on it , on the front of the left chest is a set of Dolphins pinned upside down over a submarine pin with a V-1 on deck, on the ribbon below are two stars, one gold and one silver.  below that is a blue enameled plate that has a rifle-musket and a wreath, the right breast pocket has a set of three colored cloth strips pinned on it, as he turns surveying the room , y.  as he walks  over to a chair,you notice that he is limping a bit, you can hear a groaning click-pop  coming from his direction in time with the limp,he sits down with a sigh, waves to the bartender a single finger in a circle , then points around the room,with an inquring look and says "Any one else?" as the staffer pulls out a frosted mug and fills it with maple mead.  if you continue to watch he procedess to oil the  brace that encloses his left knee.

rest of thumb nail desciption: 50 yr old red-blond haired male with 2" long mostly white beard, 198lbs,6'3'tall with grease under nails and large bandage wrapping crown of head under  J.B.Stetson straw hat, face looks like he has seen a bit of moreof the bad than the good in life, but hasn't quite given up on things yet

Gamer - that includes me  (both old-school RPG's, and playing games on computers since Pong was invented), SF afficiando - yes, so long as you use the 'hardcore' definition of SF. It's not that I don't like or appreciate space operar or futuristic fantasy, but there's an awful lot of stuff that gets lablled SF these days that just isn't.  Re-enactor.. only virtually (used to fly the serious end of WarBirds online, re-enacting WW2 air campaigns). Tinkerer - I've only really dabbled a bit so far (leatherwork and sewing) but fingers crossed.. - and yes, that does appeal to me, that aspect.

I strongly feel I am better suited in a place, where ladies and gentlemen  understand the needs of the baby boomer Steamers..

weell it looks like this geezer is about to have to do a twenty something style road trip ,,, my drivers licence expires in ten days. so here we go on a solo run to santa fe nm in early winter,and back to aberdeen,md,all together  4000 miles in four  days with a day layover at the mid-point, wish me luck,i hope i don't need it but a few prayers to Thor for good weather along the route wouldn't be scoffed at.                                        Miles (a born again pagan sailor) Martin

Is going to be "Fun" i think at least i hope so. grin   i do like driving just hope the weather is slightly co-operative .  any one else done something crazy/dumb/nessesary like this recently?. got the tires changed yesterday and the oil, now just need to fix to back heater in the van and she will be ready for the run.   Miles

Last dumb thing I did was ride a motorbike to Scotland, turned left and then rode up through the N.Atlantic! (Outer Hebrides - Barra; S.Uist; Benbecula; N.Uist; Harris and Lewis.) I loved it, there is something about a road trip that makes me smile. Stay safe Miles. As a sailor I know you will prepare thoroughly. Just watch out for the other guy...

THE ROAD TRIP DIDN'T MAKE TWO STATES BEFORE I HAD TO TURN AROUND AND COME BACK TO MD , HAD A CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE THAT I COULD NOT FIND WITH THE TOOLS AT HAND. AFTER SPENDING HALF A NIGHT CHANGING A ALTERNATOR AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR THAT WERE BOTH GOOD OUT I TOOK THE DASH A PART TO LOOK FOR FRIED WIRES ...NO LUCK SO SLAPPED IT BACK TOGETHER BOUGHT A TROLLING MOTOR BATTERY AND DROVE BACK . WOULD OF MADE IT EXCEPT FOR THE POWER DRAIN OF RUNNING THE WIPERS TO KEEP THE WINDSHIELD CLEAR

did not realiz i had caps lock on ,tus the spoiler to tiered to fix it now, since Sunday at 530 am with two cat naps 1 hour in the front of a wrecker as he brought me the last 60 miles thru the snow and freezing rain, got her at 330 paid him and laid down on the living room floor and crashed untill mom came out at 745 and woke me ,unloaded thevan and made reservation to go by train,must be there by 4;00 this afternoon.so later. it is 1212 local as i type this on tues . miles

I am now in NM at me sister's place ,she let me log on. was a good trip ,I do like the train ride i just wish i had been a bit better prepared for the run. was  a fairly hassle free trip, but no pictures . will try to get some on the return trip.

Martin, Glad you made it but sorry the weather and car trouble were such a hassle. We moved from Maryland to Texas last year and the weather in January and February was the pits. We were not able to finish the move till March since the moving van could not get in to our street.

Now to address the GEEZER club... What do you mean 50! Mere kids! Don't you know that 50 is the new 40? Is there a special "senior" status for those of us over 70? My motto is "Never too old for Steampunk!"
